Recommendation for a real-time RPG focused on magic
July 19th, 2007, 03:38
Hi there. Pretty new to this forum but i really liked the community here
Anyhow, the topic pretty much says what i would like to hear from you in this thread. I have yet to find an RPG which is more magic-based if you know what i mean. Preferably a real-time… more like the Gothic-series perhaps. Sure you have NWN(my favourite;-) and games like that, not to mention TES-series, but NWN isn't real-time and TES.. well yes, but no
Does anyone have any recommendations?
And by the way it should be of the newer sort :-P Say year 2000+ ;-)

Arx Fatalis is good, however it's in the 1st person perspective. Good solid game tho. You have to create runic symbols with your hands to cast spells. The spells are also cool.

I'd like to suggest DL, I really would, but can I be that cruel!!

Dungeon Lords is not a very good game, though some have had entirely too much fun playing it. Oh - and I wouldn't say it is 'focused on magic' but rather that by mid-game the balance for magic power is so out of whack it is silly. The only thing that keeps it in check is the ridiculously slow regen rate on spells.

I'd say forget about dungeon lords. Go with Arx Fatalis. It's a good game. Really.
The spells are great and the atmosphere is awesome. One of the best RPGs made in
the 2000's.
But you don't have to take my word for it
Download the demo! http://ds.jowood.com/arxfatalis/arx_demo_english.exe
Also, there's divine divinity.. I don't know what you mean by "Focused on magic" ? Neverwinter Nights isn't focused on magic, is it? but check out divine divinity:

Take Gothic 3 for instance, that game(imo) is not focused on magic, since there are verry few spells and it's hard to use(more or less).
This might sound a but peculiar, but i hope you know what i mean

Arx Fatalis is the first game that jumps to mind. I haven't played it myself, but I know it has a rather in-depth and detailed magic system. It does seem possible in Divine Divinity (from what little I've played of it) to go through with just a magic using character.
Later this year Eschalon will be out and you can play through that with a magic user character, with a fair bit of customisation in build available.

You know the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views, which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.

If you want something original, you could try Materia Magica. It's very interesting MUD and there is lots of magic
http://www.materiamagica.com
You'll also need some MUD client. I recommend MushClient:

But beware… MUDs are very dangerous games!

I would also recommend Divine divinity. You can play as a all in mage from the start or even make mage/warrior/thief at the same time andd a decent amount of spells to learn, but not really a lot. it is a great game

I also liked Beyond Divinity despite the horrible voice acting…
Please, don't throw stones at me guys! I'm just being honest!

I couldn't play Beyond Div even with the sound turned off--but I applaud you for your dedication, Zakhary
AFA real time magic focused rpgs, this is a little bit of a stretch, but Kult:Heretic Kingdoms is a lot of fun and has a nice focus on magic.
(Scroll down for a link to the demo.)

Kult is a good suggestion. It's not so much based on "conventional" magic, but has a very well done supernatural/arcane element that plays a central role. And, best of all, the narration is done by Tom Baker, which is the best part of the game
Prooz, MUD means Multi-User Dungeon, it's basically a text-based multi-player RPG, often with a focus on dungeon crawling, so largely like a D&D tabletop game.

The "magic" used in Kult is the most interesting I have ever seen.
To me, it looks (from what I've heard; I've never played the game this far) as if the devs had been browsing through actual existing esoteric-centered forums and sites … (I know a few bits about that, so I can tell.)
