BioWare - David Gaider & Romance Options
January 25th, 2014, 14:21
I'm all for having romances as DLC. Then I'd have another type of DLC to ignore (along with weapon and armor packs).
Having said that, I don't really mind that romance stuff as long as it's well-made, takes at least some effort, and doesn't distract too much from the other gameplay. But that's just me, and I can understand how it can be an important part of the game for other people.

I don't need a romance option as much as I like to have some sort of relationship with my companions. Conversation, banter, personal quests.. I want my companions to be more than just two dimensional stooges without a voice or personality.

I think he is good man! Gaider had courage and cool ideas. Adding romances to RPGs was no easy thing and very risky in this business. I do not think it is easy and riskless even today. Too many guys feel uncomfortable even with optional romance. Computer games are still very much dominated by macho attitudes, sort of the "Chuck Norris"-wannabe gamers, who do not want to be a "softie".
I welcome the options. Isn't a story driven RPG supposed to be about options? It's not that any Bioware RPG ever forced you to romance an NPC. You have to pursue it.
I don't think he is courageous. It's wanted by a lot of Bioware fans so basically he is doing what their fans want so I don't see how that is courageous. And what do you mean guys feel uncomfortable with optional romance options? I don't see many guys being shy about voicing their opinions about in-game romances, even in this forums?
I, myself, don't mind romance options but only if it helps building meaningful relationship between PC-companions. What I want to see is meaningful character development and well-written romance can help with that.
I also don't think Gaider is cool guy at all. It seems like all he ever talks about as a "lead writer" is romance. Why doesn't he just work on some dating games then…. I'm really sick of him talking as though in-game romance is all is about RPG.
