Wasteland: Why am I not getting any health?

I'm trying to play the original Wasteland (well, the recent re-release of the game), and I've run into quite a serious problem: I'm not getting any health back.
As far as I can tell, the way you are meant to get health back is by resting, which is done by holding down esc. I set up a macro that makes the game advance about 5h every time I press the key, but I'm still not getting a single health point back, even after having spent days resting.
So am I missing something here? Is there something else that I need to do in order to get my health back?

You are probably suffering from some sort of sickness. Is your health displayed with a white outline? Go see a doctor, and you can get cured. Highpool has a doctor, I believe.

That seem to have been it. I somehow contracted radiation poisoning from fighting mutant bunnies. Thanks for the help!
