First time playing Gothic

You can have fun reloading . . .
There is one very very tuff beast in the nearby forest area of Khorinis. One play day I took a break from playing the game narrative and just wanted to do something wacky. So I carefully lured this beast into town. The beast killed about half the town folks and couple of what I thought were important NPC. After surveying the devastation, I mind pretended it was all a dream and reloaded and resumed my normal play session.

Doing wacky stuff can be fun! I attacked a few NPCs just to see what would happen. Quickly re-loaded after getting my butt handed to me.
Does every NPC steal your gold after they beat you up?

I cast 50 Army of Darkness scrolls near the chapter four main hub. That was a spectacular slide show!

And thank you for giving it to them . . . .

Heh, I'll keep that in mind.
The level design of this game is so cool. I love how they intermingle difficult enemies with weaker ones, so the end result is a very tense exploration through an unknown area. That's just something you don't see anymore in level-scaled, open-world RPGs.

It's a small detail, but I like how there are generic "citizen" NPCs in the game. They serve to flesh out the city a bit more and make it feel more alive, which is nice. I don't recall much of that in Risen 2. Risen 2 may have had just as many NPCs spread throughout their world, but the individual locations felt a bit sparse in terms of how many people were occupying them. I would like to see more NPC variety in that regard, as well as housing for them, beds, schedules, etc. The first Gothic game did a great job of this as well.

Not usually the best idea to join a faction before visiting the rest of the island. Other than that have fun.
Field raiders can easily be killed if you time it right. They come at you and if you slash forward then you basically stun them and just keep hitting them.

Because it's not so much that there are a lot of citizens but that they are actually doing something. Just about all of them are either working, playing or sleeping. They're not just standing there waiting for you to talk to them 24/7.
BTW, there was an NPC in Anachonix that was aware of this peculiar existence and got mad when you walked away. I always made a point to visit him when I was in the area.

Yeah, I realize I probably joined the faction a little too soon, but I'm thinking that, in a future playthrough of the game, I will check out the others more thoroughly. I was at a point where I wanted to join one so I just went for it. The militia seemed like a good bet because I love the city of Khorinis.

Yeah, you might just be losing some xp on non-faction related quests, which can be useful at the start of the game…
And which would mean less grinding for you later maybe

Yeah, the lost XP is a bummer, but hopefully I can still progress through the game without it. I don't mind grinding on enemies, combat is fun in this game. I love the hunt.
OH, and how about the ultra-clever respawning in this game?! Love, love, LOVE that. I made it to Chapter 2 and some enemies were new spawns as well as a few clever respawns. God, this game just does everything right!

Well, I've decided to start over and explore more thoroughly. I'm also putting it on YouTube as a Let's Play. Should be fun!

You know I have played Gothic 2&3 but have not played the first one, might have to get a copy and play it.Is it the best one of the 3?

Not to me. But that question is debated frequently.
But if you liked 2 & 3, you should like (luv) #1.

I think Gothic 2 Gold is a little better, but it's hard to improve upon perfection.
I noticed that, for a lot of Gothic fans, it depends on which one they played first. I played them in order, but I still think Gothic 2 with NotR is the peak of the series.

I could just never get into these games, but I loved Risen 3. Perhaps I will give it another try. I think I have them all somewhere. I'll look through the threads and see about updating the graphics a bit, once I get bored of Grim Dawn.

I think Gothic 2 & 3 are easy to get started on immediately but G1 has a bit of a learning curve at the beginning that you just have to stick with for a while. G3 has a huge world with lots of stuff going on so its easy give up just because you get lost in the story. Therefore I always recommend G2 first.
I think the only reason I stuck with G1 was because I played G2 first and knew it was going to be a great game. But that opening learning curve was pretty tuff for me. But as I said before, playing G2 first and then going to G1 is like going in a time machine and playing the Gothic prequel. It was so weird to see stuff that was in ruins in G2 to be a full city in G1. I felt like a gaming archeologist. Indiana Dajjer.
