Default Anyone know any 2U servers with up to 4 18-core processors or close to it ?

June 2nd, 2015, 21:54
Hi,

I'm currently looking at buying 2U servers for my job and I can't seem to find many 2U servers with 4 18-core processors ?

HP and Dell both have 1U servers with 2 18-core processors.

Dell seems to have one or two configs that do it, but not many.

Any ideas ?

Thanks, but that's a 4U server and only seems to support Quad-core processors.

I think for HP Gen 9 2U servers, you're stuck with 2 x 18… but you might be surprised by the performance you get from those servers, any specific reason you are aiming at 4 x 18 ?

It's to increase the compute density within a rack and as such reduce floorspace.

We're talking about a large data centre in a compute heavy environment.

The current view is to use 1U servers with 2x18 core processors.
However, we're looking at 2U to increase the density within racks, thus allowing for less of other parts. But the number of processors should not be reduced, otherwise, we're missing the point.

Well, you're looking at some seriously expensive servers in that case, but I guess something like this might fit your bill:

http://www.siliconmechanics.com/i335…sas-server.php

It is not enough to look only at the amount of cores but also what sort of processor you have in there…. you can get 4x16 for their AMD offerings.

Thanks. That one doesn't have enough cores: 10 core maximum on that one …
So that's not far from 2 x 18….
36 vs 40 cores.

However, some of the others on that site might work. I'll have a look.

You can get 4x16 for their AMD offerings. But again you might get better performance for 4 x 10 cores depending on what processor you choose.
