The Secret World: Ultimate Edition

The Secret World is a criminally underrated game. If you want to just see the story content without worrying about the MMOness of it I would suggest focusing on melee survival and AoE abilities. It's worth a run through, the setting and lore are top notch.

For all I know it's not underrated.
The problem is it can't be played on toasters like Maple Story or Travian, it doesn't have hype/advertising machine behind it like Destiny or Overwatch and it's not a part of esports scene like League of Legends.
It's only sin is being MMO and not singleplayer game. The very reason I didn't buy it despite praise on it's story is MMO thing. Maybe after several more years someone somehow strips it away then I'll buy. But to buy a game that can die once some CEO decides to shutdown a server? Not gonna happen.

However for $15 Im sure Ill get some sort of entertainment out of TSW before that happens

Funcom is "relaunching" The Secret World come March of this year.
If they fix the combat, my main complains about the game, I'm so giving it a go again.

Hmm, hope it lives long enough for me to play some more, I quite like it story/investigation-wise. Be nice if they considered packaging it up as a single player/offline offering for slow pokes like me.

Well, the "relaunch" of The Secret World looks more like making a remaster (going full action RPG, different server, not called a MMO anymore). They are actually keeping both the TSW and TSWL (The Secret World Legend) on separate servers and characters can't be transfered (subscription, vanity items and store bought stuff can).
Steam page even list it as a single player game and co-op instead of MMO, nor does Funcom call it a MMO anywhere in the press release. I always played TSW as a single player game and now I got a F2P single player game (I can't wait to see the F2P restriction though).
Also, they are archiving TSW characters they haven't been logged into since the last 6 months on April 11th.

I'm very keen on checking this out. I love everything about Secret World except the combat and the character system - and apparently, those are the things they've changed.
Hoping for the best

Interesting. I bought this a while back but never played it much at all. I've been wanting to but would prefer it as a single player game rather than an MMO I think.

Nothing is free, so what is their gain from going F2P (particularly if all previous and future DLC content will be free)?
Moreover, when going on Steam, does that mean that there is no need for their client (i.e. is it really an offline single player)?

Hard to get a good read on exactly how the new combat will play.
Guess I will have to try it out for myself

I'd forgotten about the revamp… I haven't played TSW for a month or two. Please post impressions, experience etc once it goes live.

I think they just suddenly have extra funding due to the success of Conan Exiles and they're using it to buff all their games.
Funcom is excited to announce that their acclaimed story-driven game The Secret World will be relaunched this spring as Secret World Legends, a shared-world action RPG with completely revamped combat, a newly designed progression system, and updated visuals. The game’s full collection of missions and mysteries will be free to play, with over 100 hours of mature storytelling and surprises. Players can sign up for Secret World Legends’ beta at www.SecretWorldLegends.com.
“Over the course of five years, The Secret World has created a truly memorable RPG universe that stands out to this day for the uniqueness of its dark setting and tone, the depth of its quest design, and the high quality of its voice acting throughout,” said Rui Casais, CEO of Funcom. “Secret World Legends uses that foundation to mark a new era for the game, offering a fresh start for newcomers and long-time fans alike, delivering a captivating journey that can be enjoyed entirely on your own or with friends.”
Secret World Legends plunges players into a shadowy war against the supernatural in an adventure that crosses our world with the realms of ancient myth and legend. As players traverse the globe unraveling complex investigations into the unknown, they’ll need to uncover clues and use their own wits as much as their characters’ abilities. A highly extensive and customizable arsenal of firearms, weapons, gear and otherworldly powers will give players the strength to battle the forces of darkness as they dig deeper into these vast and mysterious lands. Players can go at it alone and enjoy the over 100 hours of story at their own pace, or team up with others as they explore the world and unravel its mysteries.
“One of our biggest goals in relaunching the game has been to reimagine the core gameplay experience in a way befitting a modern-day action RPG,” said Scott Junior, executive producer. “Secret World Legends features combat that feels more natural, deep systems that are more intuitive, better structuring of the early game for new players, and improved mission flow to strengthen the pace of progression for players.”

Unlikely, as a revamp on this scale will have taken a lot of work already - which would have been started months before Conan Exiles was even released.

Is it unlikely that they'd use profits from game sales to help develop their old properties? I mean, development is costing money from somewhere, isnt it. Even if they're in debt they're being funded by investors with faith in the properties potential.

What you said, though, is unlikely.

While I'm sure they will use funds from all sources to maintain and improve their games - this specific Secret World revamp (buff, as you call it) is HIGHLY unlikely to have been funded by this "sudden" success.

You know what I meant. You know its coming out in much better shape now because they're loaded.
Whats going on with you, anyway? I assume you left the watch because you met a special someone and had to cut down your internet use in an effort to appear more normal. So, she fucked off with an ex and you're back trying to powerlevel your account to 15000 posts?
