Default iTunes 12.2 a word of warning

July 4th, 2015, 11:43
Hi there.

iTunes for windows. Some like it, some hate it. It has worked ok for me. Until now.

I was a bit curious about Apple Music, so I signed on for the 3 free months. And upgraded to 12.2.

The result:
  1. All my playlists were gone.
  2. iTunes decided that all my music was to be obtained from iCloud, and I had to download every track from there. I have disabled iCloud, as I have everything stored on a disk, and want to acess my music from there, but that had changed during upgrade (I may have overlooked something). For some reason 12.2 decided not to delete local storage.
  3. Apples "friendly" DRM was applied to all my music, even music I've bought elsewhere.

I didn't like that.

One way to to partially solve it is to empty the library, and add all my music from files. But that would not restore my playlists. There are probably other solutions which I don't know of.

My solution: Reinstall 12.1. This may be a bit cumbersome (it failed repeatedly for me), but there is a howto here: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-dow…-mac-tutorial/. Although it describes downgrading from 12.1 to 12.0, it works also for 12.2-> 12.1.

The result:
  1. Things work as they did before upgrading!! Yay!
  2. I won't be subscribing to Apple Music after the 3 mnd period.

pibbur who definitely is going to look for other music library applications. He has used Mediamonkey, but some issues which he can no longer remember didn't appeal to him.

PS. I don't use straming for my music, as services like Spotify last time a checked lacks some of the music I like. DS.

Yea, I have noticed there is missing music in itunes now on my pc. Several albums are now missing. What is strange is the update didn't even process correctly, and aborted with an error message.

The solution I found is iDevice2PC, where I can use my ipod touch and restore all my music back to itunes that way. http://www.casicakes.com/idevice2pc

It costs money, but it is good software that I have used in the past, when an upgrade of itunes did the same thing. I'm just glad I have my ipod where all my music still is intact. Apple sometimes does these buggy updates, and then they fix it eventually, but it takes time.

As I don't use viruses I can't help you Pibbur, except to recommend to immediately remove the virus from your PC!

BTW, Spotify keeps adding stuff… and if you like Taylor Swift you won't find her anywhere anyway… and you can add your local songs to Spotify… ok I am a Spotify lover so I am not objective when I keep recommending it!

I use http://powerampapp.com/. Its my favorite one so far but it appears that it is only for Android. I mostly use it on random play for the music I keep on the phone. I rarely use Spotify or Pandora (my two favorite streaming services) on the phone just to keep my bandwidth usage in check.

iTunes served me well before 12.2. Fortunately I was able to roll back to 12.1. I am still looking to replace it, however. If possible.

BTW, Spotify keeps adding stuff… and if you like Taylor Swift you won't find her anywhere anyway… and you can add your local songs to Spotify… ok I am a Spotify lover so I am not objective when I keep recommending it!
You don't say!!

Now, say after me:
Gimme a 'S'!
Gimme a 'K'!
Gimme an 'Y'!
Gimme a 'R'!
Gimme an 'I'!
Gimme a 'M'!

Wazzat spell? "skyrim"!
Didn't hearya "SKYRIM"
Louder "SKYRIM"
What's the best game? "SKYYYRIIIIIIIIM"
What's the best game? "SKYYYRIIIIIIIIM"

pibbur who is pretty sure he can live without listening to Taylor Swift, since he has live well without her so far (hasn't knowingly heard anything by her, actually). But who can't live without the "National Orchestra of the United Kingdom of Goats".

Itunes anything lol. I would never even touch it. Leave it to Apple to make people enthusiastic about locking themselves in an ecosystem. Like Richard Stallman said, Apple is about the "jail made cool".

I don't *do* iTunes either as I am also a strong believer in freedom .

I simply organise my music in a more artisan way. I create all folders manually, I create cue-files to go with single flac-files, manually add metadata to my files, (which BTW is a real PITA for classical) and then copy paste all folders to a Micro SD which in turn goes into my audio player.

Complete freedom and no DRM crap .

As I said, until 12.2, iTunes has served me well. Well organized library and music files. No problems adding music from different sources (mostly itunes store, emusic, bandcamp and CD's), no problems playing my music on whatever device I want, in whatever way I want. No locking, no jail. And no hassle. So there was no reason for me to switch.

Until 12.2.

For metadata musicbrainz's picard is the best (I know pubir loves TNG so he should love this one). It automatically creates the folders and moves the files into it with the correct metadata (for mp3, mp4/aac, flac, etc.). The music organizes itself afterwards.

I use amarok for playing, creating playlist and synching with my phone.

I use iTunes on my Mac, iPhone, and Car without issues as long as I have iCloud turned off for music (and other similar media).

@ilm: pubir?
Thanks for the suggestions, I will take a closer look at those programs.

@Trasher, regarding iCloud: Same here, as long as I have anything to say (which I don't think I did when upgrading), I won't use iCloud. In cases like these, I follow a very sensible rule from Harry Potter: Don't trust anything that can think for itself, if you can't see where it keeps its brain.

Hardcore. This is very much how I like to roll. Open source lossless files with manual metadata? That's proper music geekery.

I do use iCloud for syncing Firefox bookmarks across my multiple platforms (mac, iphone, and PC). That's about it though.

Been saying no to the do you want to upgrade prompt for a long time. Only have it for my iPod (classic, touch screens are a waste of battery).

I stopped upgrading IOS on my phone since my last phone was effectively broken on a later iOS update, forcing me to get a new phone. Imagine that! Don't upgrade on Apple software unless you really have to.

If there's even a single living being on Earth who actually likes iTunes for Windows, I think that's all the evidence we need to bring about our extinction as a race.

I won't say I like iTunes. But it has worked for me. I guess that serves as a cause perhaps not for human extinction, but for a serious setback?
