Default New Star Wars movie gets 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Gosh, what an awful picture (gif). Call me oversensitive, but my stomach ached - really.
I did not expect it. And I did not think it was humorous.
I presume others are de-sensitised - overexposure?

On the tele in my country the news editors filter the heaviest violent stuff out, thank heavens for that, and show only the lighter things, but it's always accompanied with a warning.
When something of violence is shown in a movie I turn my eyes away.
Yes, I know the world is full of awful things, but me being able to watch violent acts with dry eyes, or even laughter, will definitely not be of any help to the victims.
I don't think empathy and being numb go well together.

Personally I dislike the American culture where violence is allowed in any movie or game without any probs but nudity and affectionate sexual intercourse is banned to 18+. Ridiculous.

When you think of it, it is awkward that there are lots of games where you kill living creatures, but games about getting an orgasm with as many people in x minutes, or pleasing your virtual lover as best as you can?
I'd prefer healthy porn to violence any time.

A snuff film is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as "a movie in a purported genre of movies in which an actor is actually murdered or commits suicide".[1] It may include a motion picture genre that depicts the actual murder of a person or people, without the aid of special effects, for the express purpose of financial exploitation, but that detail is extraneous, so long as it is "circulated amongst a jaded few for the purpose of entertainment".[2] Some filmed records of executions and murders exist but have not been released for commercial purposes.

Answered here:

Well, what you are describing isn't technically a "snuff film" but rather just a videotaped footage of a murder. A snuff film is the filming of a murder that is made specifically for the purpose of distributing/selling to a tight-knit group of depraved individuals as a source entertainment. Applied to this concept, it is very illegal.
& @Pibbur, it's not just a matter of taking offence at suicide, though you are right, some may be doubly offended by that, but it's about living in a cold commercial world where if there was profit in propagating such images then people would be murdered for money, this is why it's not a matter of taboo but just a matter of obvious humanity, the same common-sense which seeks to reduce the global Nuclear weapon race and the same common-sense which created a law against murder in the first place.

@ Lugi, this has nothing whatsoever to do with liberalism, agendas and whatever other 'issues' your cult may want to express, it's basic social interaction and is a cross-party issue that is agreed upon by all sections of society, both right, left, classicist & modern, all except 'loons'.

You might know it's from a movie. But will everyone know that? And even if it was from a movie, do you think posting the rape scene from a Clockwork Orange in isolation from its context makes for 'hilarious' forum interaction? How about a gif from a gore horror movie where someone's brains are being ripped from their head? You wanna know the difference? The difference is people can choose to watch those when they're safely inside a movie, you can't choose to not view a gif on a thread… you fucking moron.

You keep bleating on about how dumb everyone else is, but you are the dumbest pillock on the block if you've got to adulthood and don't even know the very basics of acceptable public interaction, were you born in a fucking barn or something?

The image has been removed.

And let's keep the personal insults where they should remain, which is in your head and not in this forum.

Agree - sadly luj1 has proven himself incapable of respectful or intelligent discourse. His political / social leanings only further emphasize that lack of fundamental ability.

kudos to lb for mentioning something. I was going to but hesitated.
--

back on topic. I had fun at the film. I saw the introduction of the new characters. unfortunately, I'm very disappointed what a terrible re-hash it was. I hope to see development of the characters, especially TR-8R.

I thought it was interesting that for all the shock and horror at the killing of real people, to the point he removed his helmet, he only merely hesitated to shoot when he escaped. He had no problem killing after that.

Also, the joke that he worked in sanitation (though he knew everything about the Starkiller base and its weaknesses) is a nod to the movie Clerks.

Everyone got that right? Starkiller? That was Luke's name in the original scripts - Anakin Starkiller.

…and later, the protagonist of the TFU games. Although they are not D-canon, but the name still was in heavy use and should be somewhat familiar nowadays.

In semi-related Star Wars commentary, HOW MUCH LONGER is Youtube going to have that GOD DAMNED lightsaber noise whenever you mouse over the volume control?

HOW LONG O LORD?

I'm a little late to the party, but I finally saw TFA tonight. I wanted to wait until the hype had died out a little because I hate crowded theatres.

Anyways, I read the first two pages of this thread but skipped most of the rest when it turned into the inevitable debate between those who liked it and those who didn't.

Me? I liked it. It was better than I expected, and I loved how it ended. I didn't care for some of the early dialogue, especially from John Boyega's character, but I thought it improved a lot after the first 30 minutes.

Unlike some, I didn't have any issues with the cast, including Boyega. Some of his lines were cringe worthy, but you can't blame the actor for bad writing. I thought Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver were both a good fit for their roles.

I see that a major complaint from some people is that they left some things unanswered. I don't get that. It's going to be a bleeping trilogy… do you really think it was necessary to explain everything in the first movie?

For example, I like how they revealed almost nothing about Supreme Leader Snoke. I thought the character, and the mystery sounding him, were great. I have my suspicions about who he might be, but I'm happy to speculate until the next movie.

I'd say it was around an 8/10 for me, and I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't great, but it was definitely better than any of the prequel movies imo, especially in the acting and dialogue departments.

the major complaint is its the same freaking movie!

the actors were good. I did like the episode of Undercover Boss Starkiller Base, tho. It was eye opening.

Well, this movie is fading from the box office now and the more final short-term statistics are available.

IMDB still has the movie at an 8.4/10 after over 440,000 votes which is the same number of people who voted on Attack of the Clones which stands at 6.7/10.

The movie sits at no.11 all time inflation adjusted domestic US box office, even overtaking Empire Strikes Back, and being the second most commercially successful SW movie.

And I would still be happy paying to watch it again, though I personally never got round to it. The IMDB discussion forum is still jammed with trolls trying to force people to hate it…

I enjoyed this quite a bit more than I expected to.

It's incredibly unimaginative - but it still managed to engage me for the most part.
