Well, technology hasn't been ready back then yet.
It certainly is now.
Yesterday I stumbled upon another VR device I haven't heared about before: The FOVE (FOV= Field of View). Interesting about this one is, that it goes a step further:
It has Eye tracking, so that you can select something in the interface for example by looking at it, and moving your crosshair with your eyes instead of your head, so that you can move and aim separately. In addition it got a rendering focus. Meaning that the stuff you look at is rendered in better quality than the rest.
Was an interesting read:

Regarding "it has been there", there is a recent quote from Palmer Luckey (Oculus Rift):
Palmer said the Virtual Boy had "[no] head tracking, low field of view, [and was] essentially a monochrome 3DTV". He added that the Virtual Boy failing was a "real shame, too, because the association of the Virtual Boy with VR hurt the industry in the long run".http://www.tweaktown.com/news/49588/…try/index.html
Palmer did say one positive thing about Nintendo's 'VR' device, is that "It did have the first LED display in a consumer device, though - probably the best contrast of any display up to that point!"

For those interested in VR, this looks like an interesting early game for wannabe astronauts.

Are those VR helmets waterproof? Because then you could go diving while playing that game and feel a little more weightless.

Aren't some mobile phones waterproof? Should work for at least some smaller demos then.

"They have better cameras, larger batteries, and they’re both waterproof for up to 30 minutes of submersion."

I await the Darwin Awards that will inevitably feature people coming to a sticky end attempting such things with their new helmets.![]()

Well, given how much battery it would drain… maybe 30 minutes is all you could play anyhow… speaking of batteries… it is a pity the waterproof part makes it not possible to switch batteries in the next galaxy
