Warning: Microsoft is now trying to force Windows 10 on everyone - how to avoid it
Warning: Microsoft is now trying to force Windows 10 on everyone - how to avoid it
February 2nd, 2016, 21:24
"If you’re running Windows 7, open the Control panel and go to the Windows Update section. Then select “change settings” on the left menu, and make sure to uncheck the box below “recommended updates“. Now, click OK at the bottom of the window, and you’re set!
On Windows 8.1, you can either use the Control panel and then follow the same process we described above on Windows 7, or you can use the “modern” Settings app. If you do that, just go to PC settings > Update and recovery > Windows update, and then select Choose how updates get installed. Now, please uncheck the Recommended updates box, then click on Apply below, and you’re good!"
http://www.winbeta.org/news/windows-…ows-7-8-1-mean
I would say to be safer, change the "important updates" option to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"
Microsoft is being sneaky and trying to cram Win 10 down the throats of everyone using Win 7 (or Win8 or Vista), by putting Win 10 in the "recommended updates" via windows update, so if you have windows automatically install updates, it will force you to go to Win10, without giving you a chance to say No, so beware!
News story about this: (one among many) - http://betanews.com/2016/02/02/micro…ople-is-wrong/

Wait…

This is stupid! Some older machines will break if win10 installed on them (I saw it myself a few times). No, you don't get a warning win10 won't work properly on that hardware and you'll, at least before, see an icon that says you can upgrade to win10.
And if win10 is considered by Microsoft as an update and not upgrade of win7, it's a disaster.
Bad move M$!

Sad thing is, anyone with even a little computer know how will not allow Windows to update automatically. So the people that are going to be affected the most will be the people least able to fix it when something inevitably goes wrong.

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
This was actually announced (though not terribly loudly) back in October. Also, it DOES prompt you before updating. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/mic…ate,31116.html

I was made aware of this a few months ago. Yes it is very very annoying.

The people who installed all Windows Updates have had it installed for months already.

Well, I have to say it is one of the more nasty moves MS has done anyhow. Uninstalling the update won't help either, as it'll be re-installed.
However I managed to fool the thing by manually deleting the files related to it. So now it thinks I have the update installed… but I don't
It was not an easy thing to do though, they even messed with owners and groups in Windows 7 to make the files especially hard to delete.

I got sick of hiding the nag, then sick of hiding the nag after each time MS re-enabled it, and sick of having to watch out for it in "updates", so used "GWX Control Panel" to handle it.
"This is a free tool that can remove and disable the 'Get Windows 10' notification area icon on Windows 7 and Windows 8. Recent versions can also disable 'Upgrade to Windows 10' behavior in the Windows Update control panel and do much more. "
Now I get no nag, no background download, and it doesn't even appear as an available "upgrade" in any category (and you can reverse any aspect of this at any time).

I used to like having control over my PC like you guys. Then I took an OS to the knee. I welcome our unified OS overlords. For 5% that need control, it won't do. For the other 95% it will.

"All your files are exactly where you left them"
I freaked out when I got that message after a Win 10 update. Thought I got a virus because I couldn't move the mouse for five minutes.

The correct version would be:

Look! Something new from a big company
Let me instantly hate on it without even trying it out
<---win10 user, I'm still alive and everything on my computer is working just as before. Nobody jumped out of my screen to put a chip in my head either.
