I found Bioshock Infinite to be a huge step back from the other games. They dumbed it down significantly plus added a checkpoint save system. I don't know what the hell they were thinking…

Infinite starts out slow, but then it ramps up pretty quickly. Keep in mind that it's fairly story-heavy for a shooter. If you're more in the mood for a pure shooter, there are some I could recommend.

I slightly preferred the setting and atmosphere of Bioshock 1&2, but Infinite has the better story and characters by far.

Think of it as a story-driven shooter with nice exploration.

It's very much about immersing yourself, though.

So, if you're going to….

pout
and
shout
and
let it all out

That's not helpful to the experience

Well, they added a story that's Infinitely better and actually consistent, so that's something

But they dumbed down the gameplay with the Halo style shield and combat oriented level design when the first 2 were way more complex and exploration and puzzle based.
At least the story was amazing.

Thanks Gorath for the promo on the season pass.

I don't agree that BI had "combat oriented level design" overall - but I agree they simplified the character system too much. Bioshock had mostlysmaller levels where Bioshock Infinite had larger levels, but both have lots of interesting places to explore, and Bioshock Infinite had much greater detail and variety in terms of the environment.

It's true that BI had a handful of combat set-pieces, but I would say that was more an exception than the rule.

Bioshock puzzle-based? I must have played a different version than you did. In fact, I think Bioshock Infinite was a bit better in that way, with the backtracking and secret code stuff you could find. Not much better, but a bit.

However, I think the core shooter gameplay was, again, infinitely better in BI. It felt so good, where Bioshock and Bioshock 2 were clumsy and awkward in terms of control and precision.

BI feels like America if the South had won the Civil War mixed with a heavy dose of Mormonism.

I thought Rapture generated better immersion (pardon the pun), but the story surrounding Columbia was much better. Combat-wise, I'd call it a wash, but I played them all on easy specifically to de-emphasize the combat so my opinion on that aspect isn't terribly useful. The save point thing in Infinite was annoying as shit, but with the larger and more interactive maps (a good thing) I'm sure the consoles simply couldn't handle a save anywhere system (the price to be paid).

Lords of Xulima is 70% off at GOG at the moment. One of these days I'll get around to playing that.

I'd agree with most of that, except that combat is vastly superior in BI - but, then again, the "arsenal" was superior in Bioshock.

Also, the first Bioshock has the best premise of all the Shock games.

King's Bounty games, each for just a few bucks, on GMG:
http://www.greenmangaming.com/search/?q=king%27s+bounty

Since it's packs, editions, whatnot… If you want the complete collection for cheap go for this:
1. The Legend: http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/hr/e…bounty-legend/
2. Crossworlds GOTY: http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/hr/e…ssworlds-goty/
3. Warriors.North Valhalla ed: http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/hr/e…halla-edition/
4. WoN Ice/Fire DLC: http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/hr/e…-ice-and-fire/
5. Dark Side premium: http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/hr/e…emium-edition/

One by one, the total you'll pay is:
1.74+3.74+3.19+1.74+4.99 = 15.4

The first two games are IMO a musthave. If you don't have them, buy!
The third one and it's DLC are great but not a musthave.
The fifth point, fourth game… Was IMO - meh, but I'm not sure if the shortcomings got patched.

--------------------------

For those who don't run away from challenge, who are not scared of hard fights you can't possibly win by grind as mobs are not infinite, Lords of Xulima Deluxe, 9€, only on GOG:

I agree on both but when I said the level design was more combat oriented it's because it was really similar to games like Halo, Uncharted or Gears of War where you know when there will be a fight for the most part (open areas with covers = battle, cramped interior = story) and very linear levels where the first and second games had more intricate levels.
Anyway everyone should play the series or at least the first and Infinite to make their own opinion.

Back to the topic, I only played the first KB (The Legend not the one from 30 years ago) and while I enjoyed it I thought the game dragged on a lot. Are there enough new features in the second one for me to enjoy it or are all sequels more of the same?

If you think the first KB dragged a lot, then stop there. The following games are just longer and longer.

You better have a good amount of spare time, Menigal !

I just finished it, Steam clocked 135 hrs. Sure, I could have finished it around 110 hrs, if I had early figured out the 'Alt' key (fast movement) doesn't have impact on % chances to find secret doors/traps/hidden gold/food.

If you're completionist the game will surely takes more than 100 hrs to be finished.

The second game (Armored Princess which is inside Crossroads) is better than the first one when it comes to dragging. The first one had the crazy and confusing "labyrinth" in the end which would make you lost and felt too long. I had to draw the bloody thing on a paper. No such thing in the sequel.
But I hated, passionately, the silly minidragon in it.

You could be right about the combat oriented levels, I just never took much notice of it.

For the first game, I was quite busy being pissed that it wasn't anywhere near System Shock (either of them). I was truly dismayed that Levine had turned it into a console shooter first, and a genuine Shock game second.

That sort of prepared my mind for Infinite being even worse - so my experience was one of genuine pleasure and surprise when it turned out to be utterly fantastic in unexpected ways. You see, one of the worst parts of the first Bioshock was how the story and characters completely fell apart around halfway through it. So, the last thing I expected from Infinite was a great story - and boy was it ever a great story.

I guess that might have skewed my perspective a bit

Sometimes, having low expectations can work wonders.

But you're right - everyone should play both and make up their own minds.

Back on topic.
