Huh?
Are you talking about Rogue One? Which is an "anthology" movie about something that happened right before episode 4. Yeah, Disney are milking it. Hopefully, they won't try to turn it into the MCU (marvel cinematic universe) and release 3 movies per year at some point.

Correct. From what I know, last year's was a direct evolution of the previous 6 episodes revolving around the Skywalker family. Rogue One is a movie set in the SW universe and whilst related to events in the previous movies it isn't specifically about Skywalkers. It's basically a spin off set just prior to the first SW movie.

That's probably a question you need to answer for yourself.

I am avoid spoilers but can you tell me if this one stars famed rapper extraordinaire, Childish Gambino?
The only thing I know so far from the books, is that it turned out Obi Wan killed his father.
They are not going to fool me with that red herring "David Prowse" leaked to the press. I mean, its just stupid

The core movies of Star Wars are episodes in a grand story. The first 3 movies are actually episodes 4, 5, 6. Why they didn't start with episode 1? I'm not sure, perhaps because episode 4 had more pew-pewing and it was more likely to be accepted in 1977, who knows? Then the three movies in the 2000s were episodes 1, 2 and 3. Last year we got episode 7, and 8/9 will come soon enough.
Rogue Squadron is a pre-quel of sorts, it's what happened before episode 1 in order to get the plans.
As for your 'what's the point?' question, well, why should there be a point? What's the point of watching Titanic since we know it sunk? It's basically a story about an event in the Star Wars universe. I may add, the story of the Jedi and the Sith goes back thousands of years, it's possible they one day make a movie about The Old Republic, which we have seen in games like Knights of the Old Republic and the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic.

I'm looking forward to Rogue One because it's not about those idiotic Jedi or about Luke, Leia and Han. It's about the grundhogs … the footsloggers … about, well, 'normal' folks, about semi-military operations and so on.
Also
will make an appearance, but that's okay, it's the right (OT) era.
I'm thrilled that
is in it as well … this piece of news got my hopes high that I might also meet other characters from the prequel era. Yes, sure - they also included
brother, whatshisname,
… and while I can't say that I liked him very much in TCW, he's a friggin' TCW character!
On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to Episode VIII because, well, I don't care about those old farts from Episodes IV to VI. Should have killed all of them them off in Episode VII, or forgotten about them. They lost their usefulness to me after Episode VI.
Well, perhaps they should have ditched all those movie projects with real people acting (I waaaaaaaay prefer animation to apes) and just continued TCW instead. I still don't forgive Disney for killing TCW for that idiotic SW:R nonsense (though I must admit I kinda came to like Kallus a bit).

I think it started with episode 4 for effect. When we went in, we knew that much had happened before and much would happen after. At least for me, it meant I shouldn't expect to see the war's start or end. Lucas didn't know the series would explode into such a big hit back then.
P.S. Really want to get confused? Read this book which was written soon after the first movie (ep. 4). This book is the definition of non-canonical!
