I dunno - I'm not quite so pessimistic. I mean, every movie that ever rolled out of Hollywood was first and foremost about making a fast buck, and the majority of all movies are garbage. But, you never know when a decent script might make it through to a director that knows what to do with it.

I think there's an outside chance this could be the best SW movie since the 80s.

EDIT: and if anyone tries to correct that to "the best SJW movie", I'll bite your legs off.

That was the ¢¢¢¢ version should the first movie not have done any good. You will notice that Luke and Leia's faces are not shown.

--

How can anyone complain about what is upcoming after what lucas did to it himself with the prequels (admits the last one was good)? I mean, he could have recruited Kevin Anderson or something.

If you think about the success of Star Trek still had after the budget of the first movie spiralled out of control, Star Wars could have done the same. Instead we got the Ewoks tv show.

I've watched the trailers. It looks like Call of Duty Star Wars edition. Not something that appeals to me personally.

I honestly don't believe someone wouldn't know what Rogue One is all about. That's pretty Under A Rock level of cultural knowledge.

<shrug> I didn't know the details until I read this topic. I knew it wasn't part of the "main story" but that's it. I haven't even seen a trailer yet. I've been doing a lot of gaming and reading. The only TV I've seen is the occasional football game and the news so not many advertisements other than cars and drugs.

That's what I meant, even not following any of it much you still know it's a spin-off. Nothing hard to grasp about the concept of spin-offs.

Nah, you know TFA sucked very badly.

My point is that movies, much like games, fare pretty badly in terms of art, because they require the consent of serious money - which is always looking for a return. So, to my mind, I'm not particularly more cynical about one project or another. Now and again something worthwhile runs the gauntlet of the money and the suits, and sometimes the good ones come quite unexpectedly. The minimal influence of JJ also ups the odds a little bit, IMO.

Decent film. Much better than the last one. Story was pretty tight. Best of all the prequels for sure (tho Revenge was pretty good).

Pretty shocking CGI. Sad to see that David Prowse has been banned from anything official now.

There are some people making mention that it adds a sense of desperation to the 1st film by the setting. To me, you can't help but think it takes some things away - namely it hints at a much more complicated backworld, and now it seems rushed. The wonder at how they got the plans is lost (one hole - its supposed to be done by "rebel spies" amd not major attack by the rebel equivalent of the dirty dozen/rogue suicide squad lead by the no longer ancient and extinct jedi monk). After watching the 1st one again you get other takes - like Darth isn't the omnipotent baddy that he's assumed by the 2nd film. This prequel doesn't help.

Yes, I enjoyed it a great deal. I have no idea why it's an "anthology" movie though, as it's hard to tie something more directly into the saga than this. Ah well, good stuff.

Disney call "anthology" all the movies that won't be directly linked to the Skywalkers Saga (which is what episodes 1 to 9 is).

They have a young Han Solo movie in the work, used to have a Boba Fett one (but the director was the same who did the latest FFV and they dumped him) and there was talk of a Kenobi movie (set between ep 3 and 4) too.

Eh? Will wait on this one, until enthusiasm wears off. Last one was pretty damn disappointing in how they praised it.

Oh, now Rogue One was the best SW movie in ages. At least for me. I liked it better than the rest.

I still like the TCW series better, but I found this movie so exciting … didn't even know which side to root for. Happens quite frequently, but usually because I find it hard to care about any side (see TFA). This time, I really liked them both.

Quite a lot of prequels in the making.

They made a movie out of a sentence. At some point, a woman with fancy hairdressing enters a room and says something like a lot of people died for this. This is what makes the movie.

Didn't that happen in Return of the Jedi regarding the second death star when Mon Mothma said "Many Bothan spies died to bring us this information". It has nothing to do with the first death star.

We don't know much prior to Rogue One regarding how the rebels got the first death star plans. What we know is that the plans were intercepted in some way by the Correlian corvette under Captain Antilles with Princess Leia on board. The Empire were pursuing this ship over Tatooine at very very start of A New Hope.

What Rogue One does is to fill in that info gap. It also fills the big plot hole from A New Hope making it possible for a single proton torpedo to take out an entire death star.
