The scariest horror game
December 14th, 2016, 01:50
This will sound strange. I need to undergo an operation, and I want to induce the-emotion-of-fear-turns-off-completely effect, which I was able to reach twice previously by playing horror games in total darkness for extensive amounts of time. Yes, I'm such a coward that I get that effect as terror keeps at its pique for an extensive amount of time, i.e. the capability to feel the emotion of fear turns off for a few days. Originally I used it to combat my stupid fear of darkness, but the effects were a lot more global than that (although temporary). I refused from the operation out of fear, and now I need to do something about it unless I want to die eventually.
The horror games I've played:
Fatal Frame I (effect achieved)
Silent Hill I-II (effect achieved with I)
Rule of the Rose (not scary enough)
Resident Evil (zombies are stupid)
Slender (not long enough)
So far Fatal Frame II looks like a candidate. I have doubts about SH III, as in my experience of II I've figured out how to play without getting hurt halfway through the game (just keep your flashlight off), which destroyed the horror atmosphere.
In general, I'm very afraid of crazed people, although it doesn't work with zombies. Ironically, I previously picked up Fatal Frame because it was suggested to me here as a game that doesn't feature crazed people, so that I wouldn't get too scared, yet it turned out to be the scariest anyway.

Clive Barker's Undying caused me to jump from the chair quite a few times.
There are other decent horror games, but none is even similar to this one.
Zombies I do not consoder horror but grinders - zombies are just an excuse for neverending trashmobs.

One I've finished just recently…DLC for Outlast: Whistleblower. Few hours long, but more condensed version of the main game ( though you'll miss out on the main story).
I've played all of those except Fatal Frame, but this one really hit me in the "gut" a couple of times. And it's entirely about crazy people and the dark..relies on camera night vision ( like in Blair Witch), which can be pretty high intense at times…do you really want to watch as killer is coming towards you and try to evade it, or shake in the corner in complete black?
Jump scares are not as strong, but is phenomenal as "human" horror. Amnesia, so far is good, but is more about playing tricks with sound/visuals on the player.
You can also check out Alien Isolation, though it's more about building anxiety with some intense moments.
Resident Evil…was it ever real horror? Had a few moments…the shark, that creepy girl…but was pretty light in comparison to something like Silent Hill.

Bobo, I actually have Outlast! It wasn't scary in the beginning, in fact I enjoyed studying someone's bowels, but then I saw some guy in a wheelchair in the corridor, got scared and turned the game off. Lol. It sounds like it's a good candidate, indeed.
Amnesia I dropped out of boredom, nothing was happening. Sounds and visuals didn't scare me for some reason. But probably I dropped it too early, I heard that someone would start chasing you later into the game.

Oh.. and +1 for Alien Isolation. Great game imo.

I'd second Undying, and the first half of Call of Cthulhu was pretty nerve wracking with the crazy townsfolk. Oh and Realms of the Haunting.

Alien Isolation definitely gave me the willies. I tend not to be bothered by anything supernatural, as I find it all a bit silly.

Anyone played Layers of Fear? I can deal with Xenomorphs, but creepy old women are on another level.
Winter's coming, need to pick up any new horror games.

White Chamber, FNAF (well, that's my type of horror
).
I didn't find Undying very disturbing or scary, but it was a very good game, a spiritual successor to Realms of the Haunting (which, as a haunted house game, had several jump scares itself).

I tried playing Fatal Frame last Halloween, I couldn't play more than 2 hours, it was too scary.

I'd also recommand Outlast + dlc. Quite intense stuff.
Silent hill was quite scary back in the day. I don't know how well it works nowdays because the graphics are so dated.
Stalker was quite disturbing to be honest, the sense of loneliness and despair was very strong and then you had to enter some ruins where all kind of crazy shit was going on.
Dead space had few really creepy moments. Play it headphones on and during nighttime.
Alan wake is also a game I recommand checking out. It reminds me of twin peaks and stephen king novels. Plenty of disturbing moments. I think the scary effect loses a bit of it's edge towards the end as you get used to being in the dark…

With all the Outlast recommendations I need to bump it to the front of my backlog.

Outlast and its DLC are probably the best pure horror experience I could recommend. I really like Alien: Isolation as well though. It's much longer than a typical horror game and mixes in a Metroidvania level design.
Dead Space 1&2 are two of my favorite games of all time, but those are more of a horror-action hybrid than pure horror. Still, it's tough to beat the atmosphere in those games.
I'm a much bigger fan of sci-fi horror than I am of the supernatural kind. I find very few instances of the latter to be scary at all. Games like Undying and Silent Hill for instance rarely creep me out despite being quality titles, and Alan Wake didn't do anything for me in the short amount of time I played it.
Speaking of horror, I just finished downloading the demo for the new Resident Evil. I'll come back with some impressions after I give it a spin.

Yeeees…Dead Space is best action horror of all time ( second one not so good, don't listen to JDR's jabberings on it), takes best of RE IV and leaves out the bad, in a better setting. Love the sense of desperate humanity vibe from it. Plus the zero gravity fun!
Outlast II is also coming soon.

So I played the newly released demo for Resident Evil 7, and I was pleasantly surprised.
I had been pretty skeptical about the switch to first-person, but it works really well for this game. My only complaint is the title as I feel this would be better off as some kind of side-story or spin-off rather than part of the main series.
It doesn't seem to have much in common with any of the previous games, but the demo isn't very long and reveals nothing about the full game. The demo itself has multiple endings though which I thought was pretty cool. There's definitely a much greater emphasis on tension and atmosphere this time, and it feels more like a true horror title than a Resident Evil game.
It's also very well optimized for PC and has pretty much every option you could think of. If I didn't know better, I would even say it was designed for PC first.
