Might & Magic 7 XP
December 26th, 2007, 14:45
I hope someone can help me getting this oldie to work on XP. I've done some research on the net and found several ways to get M&M7 to work on XP. Sadly for me, most of these (actually all but one) don't work on my systeem. Compatablity mode, software 3D, adjusting directx none of these work. The last solution i've found is the microsoft application toolkit which i've downloaded. In the compatibility administrator i've found an entry on m&m7. However, it asks for mm7.icd instead of mm7.exe and when i give the file location it states that it can't run since it's not an executable. Can anyone help me with this ?

I haven't loaded it up in a year or two, but I'm pretty sure I had it running in XP without too many gyrations. Compatibility mode and software 3D did the trick for me. I had to go to smooth turning or else my view spun around like a top. Trying to remember, but I think I had to turn off hardware acceleration on the video, too. I know for a fact I didn't have to resort to the Microsoft toolkit.
If I get some time tonight or tomorrow, I'll see what I can do and maybe jog my memory a bit. Welcome to the boards, BTW!

Have you turned a virus scanner off during installation ?
And what you could try as well is trying to install it in safe mode … I know for example about the patch for Impossible Creatures that installs correctly ONLY in safe mode for a lot of users.

There's a fix available that works with the windows toolkit at Celestial Heavens. Just follow the somewhat detailed and complicated instructions--it worked just fine for me. Hope it does for you as well--great game.

I played MM7 on a win2k machine with no trouble at all.
Also, I played MM6 on a WinXP SP2 machine without problems.
All I did is install the game & install the patch and it worked.
Just to make my intentions clear - I'm not trying to be an arsehole here,
just to encourage you and to prove that what you are trying to do should
actually be doable.
Try disabling some of those useless winXP things like the eyecandy, security center etc etc… get tweak ui.
I always disable everything to make things faster and it seems all the old games work for me without any trouble while everyone else is having trouble. I'm not sure about this - but worth a shot perhaps?
It's an excellent game - well worth the trouble.

XP has no problem with MM6 most times--I think on my new rig I had to fuss with it a bit, but MM7 I've never got to run at all on any XP machine. You can play MM7 okay on Windows98 and maybe 2000, but it definitely doesn't play well with XP. I got nothing but blank screen after the startup til I used Mok's patch and the above fix--which did the trick for me.
Hope something works, anyway.
