Oh no, it's not the kids calling me old, it's the kids making me old. My fleeting grasp on sanity slips a little more every day.

Wow, there's a blast from the past. I can't even get a good memory of it beyond knowing that I spent a lot of hours with it. It was a real nice oversized box, right?
How about Mines of Moria? First RPG I played, on a friend's Apple ][ Plus no less. Tons of hours of ASCII goodness.

Off the top of my head I can only remember having played eight. So here's my top three:
1. Ultima Underworld
2. Daggerfall
3. Arena

Is this a thread about old games, old operating systems or old persons?
@Dasale- For its day, Moria was pretty solid. There are a lot of games built on the roguelike model. Although Moria wasn't the first roguelike, I'd argue that it did more to popularize the style than its predecessors.

I wish they'd remake some of the old classics in an upgraded graphic engine & interface. It wouldn't have to be cutting edge, 1999-2001 era graphics would be fine. It's really mostly about the resolution.
Games like Bard's Tale, Pool Of Radiance, The Magic Candle, Betrayal At Krondor, Darklands, Ultima 1-7 and many others could be re-introduced and revitalized.

Like, uh, the Pool of Radiance mod for NWN, the Ultima 5 - Lazarus mod for Dungeon Siege and the Ultima 6 mod under construction?

I hope to one day achieve the wisdom of Corwin and his hoary head.
As for Pool of Radiance..duhhhhhhh
It has 3E edition rules, its own demo and was the top selling game of the week when it was released! Just remember not to install it unpatched.
I personally did not like the Gold Box games. The big 4 before it did much better games and I felt the only reason they sold was they had the big AD&D on their boxes. The graphics were sub-par and it was the typical tedius fare from SSI. There was far more emphasis on math in their games than actually making something fun.

But personally and truthfully, I would like them redone with the same graphics, interface, music, everything…. just upgraded to 1999-2002 specs, not adjusted and compromised to fit into another engine. I just hate the Dungeon Siege engine, as well as the Aurora engine, so it makes the redone games quite boring and annoying for me. The TOEE engine OTOH ? I love it.

14 years old and counting, DOS only game, definitely an oldie.
Its not tile based for example. To me, that's an oldie.
Perhaps we should start some sort of categorization like they do with Films and Comic Books. I think the 80's could be considered a Golden Age of cRPG's starting with U3 or Wiz I as they were first really, really big computer games made for home PC.
I don't think there would be anything wrong with that. AFAIK we are the leading cRPG website around (that doesn't curse a lot).

Personally I think the Golden Age starts with Fallout and ends with Ps:T, because then the games had reached a "decent" level of development graphicwise (Infinity Engine DOES look nice, especially for it's time. Not to mention that the graphic of games like Betrayal at Krondor makes me cry) and gameplaywise (meaning they had decent maps and journals). Or maybe that's because that's when I started playing cRPG's
. Though I've read this definition somewhere else (it might have been Wikipedia). If nothing else I'd like to know what was better about the games before Fallout

In general, absolutely nothing.
Just like today, there were good games and bad games. Many people's sense of nostalgia leads them to falsely believe that games were better back then, when they were younger and more easily impressed.

Ok I like fallout. It's a great game but all this pre fallout/post fallout talk is a little silly. There were tons of games that have been made that have been better than the grand old puba itself FALLOUT. Betrayal at Krondor, Ultima 4, Ultima 5, Ultima 6 All of these ten times better than fallout. Lets add some more to this list shall we Darksun 1 and 2 IMO is better than fallout *Disclaimer I know I'm going to recieve flak for saying Darksun is better but I loved playing Darksun P&P (when I could)ever since it first came out and when the game came out it was even better.
So now back to better games than fallout. Albion, System Shock 2, Wizardry 7, Realms of Arkania 2 and 3, Darklands, Pirates (original), Quest for Glory 1, 2, 3, 4 were all better games. I even liked Pool of Radiance more than I liked Fallout. But I've been playing these games since Intellivion and C64. So I don't have as much prejudice about playing older games that make you use your imagination more, instead of being spoon fed what I am supposed to feel and see.
This was what I sorta was hoping wouldn't happen. Comparing todays games with those of yesterday. All of the games I mentioned don't have the amount of choices in fallout or the forced good and forced evil paths as in Fallout, but I have more fun even now playing these games than I do with Fallout. If you can get past the graphics and drop the mouse for 5 seconds and use the keyboard. You may find you like them for what they are and what they're not or not either way I appreciate that some of you added to the list without bringing up how much better fallout is. God I feel old now. I'm like my grandfather telling me how it used to be in the old days
Oh well anyways I'm sure a lot of you will disagree with my choices but try the games I mentioned for a bit, especially Realms of Arkania, you might be surprised or you might scream in horror and run away from the pixels. Either way they were great games.
