Default Assassin's Creed - PC Port

If they are anything like the controls in Soul Reaver 2 (or Blood Omen 2) it would be nice. On the other hand, bad controls would really hurt the PC port, nomatter how good everything else is.

Shacknews has a PC preview out--mixed but largely saying it's an improvement over the console version IF your system can handle it--I'll not be buying before trying (a demo) personally. About the criticism of repetitiveness:

A major annoyance in the console version, players must perform tiresome investigations before being allowed to destroy their primary targets. Consisting of exciting activities, such as sitting on park benches and following old men down alleyways, these tasks were typically a drag, like being made to watch an episode of Murder She Wrote before playing Grand Theft Auto. The rest of the game didn't justify the amount of boredom thrust upon the player.

However, the PC port remedies this problem by filling in the gaps between the action with--wait for it--more action. Yes, action in an action game--who would have thought?

Rather than forcing bench-sitting as a prerequisite to murder, the designers have now allowed you to complete several other, less tedious challenges that fulfill the same function. Players will have the choice of participating in timed rooftop races, archer assassinations, merchant stand destruction, and escort challenges, in addition to the five previous tasks. All are fairly self-descriptive, and all serve to infuse the investigatory intermissions with some much-needed life, by way of death.
Here's what they say about the controls:

From a mechanical standpoint it operates well enough with a mouse and keyboard, though an Xbox 360 controller is of course supported.

So it sounds like the relatively high scores for the console versions are already being shot down … and the control comments scream 'use the XBOX controller' to me.

Default Need Urgent Help Please!

April 3rd, 2008, 15:37
Hey, I'm wondering if you can help me. I've recently downloaded assassins creed on PC. It was an .iso file. I extracted the file as it was too large to burn to a disk, it then lets you click setup, and install the game. Once the game is installed, i pressed on auto run, and it comes up with the options to play the game, view the read me file, quit, etc.. I press on play, but when i do this.. it says "please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application". Is there anyway i can actually get rid of this, so i can actually play the game?

Thanks

If this is some kind of digital download version then it should run fine without a cd. But what you're describing us there sounds much more like a pirated copy… you know that's illegal, right?

Searching "Assassin's Creed pc port" with google rpgwatch is the first forum in the results. I bet its a random pirate from the waves of the internet looking for help.

I was just looking at the special edition only 35€ shipping included. Comes with metal case and four useless art cards and few new ingame investigations.

So its definately cheap but still Im not sure how good this game is. They say the pc version is improved.

Sounds like a pirated version. He probably doesn´t know that the first torrent based on the beta is incomplete and doesn´t work correctly.

I actually first thought the min. system requirements were some of an early April Fool's joke, but now I see that it is not the case I simply can't run this game on my 4˝ year old PC. I have been looking forward to this game, though. And I doubt that those who have a 1-2 year (new) PC will be able to run this game. Hence, I don't think that many units for PC games will be shipped. I could be wrong, though.

If PC games are getting more & more higher system recommended requirements, it really is no wonder why more & more people migrate to consoles.

Or then its simply a very bad port. They didnt spend any time optimizing it. But Im sure it will run on my 1.5 year old pc. I got E6600/4GB/8800GTS640.

4-5 years is really pushing it. Even the current console generation is not planned to last longer than that.

That was exactly what I was thinking … here is someone who registered at a RPG site to ask for help with a pirated version of an action game … why didn't they just post their home address while they were at it

Reminds me of an recent article about Titan Quest we had.

I have had the XBOX360 since release, played it once and never again.

Until this weekend. Hm,

Strangely how enjoyable the game is now. I like the parts the reviewers detest (the one above with the PC-preview). And this is prince of persia done right. The game thinks for me and time the jumping accordingly. You can still miss and die, but the experience is very organic.

I even like the backstory… This is surely my top game currently. Looks like one of the contender for the " The Only Finished Game By Mute Award" this year.

This video of trying to exit the game is so funny, I almost made a newspost about it despite being waaaaaaay off topic.

How the hell do you spend $20M (or whatever) on such a huge AAA project and then design some of the UI elements so badly?

depending on your location and/or time-zone, today is the release date! so, how many of us at rpgwatch would be receiving it? (esp. those who had pre-ordered)

On the 360 you don't exit games from within the games themselves, but rather via the Xbox 360 "operating system" (if you can call it that). Consequently xbox games don't usually bother with quick exits like PC games do. It seems like they didn't change the UI for the PC version and that is indeed rather sloppy.

Old post, but just saw the thread bumped and wanted to point out that this is incorrect. 32-bit OSes can use more than 4GB of memory, but Microsoft has intentionally disabled this ability in 32-bit XP (starting with SP2) and Vista. What 32-bit OSes can't do is use more than 3GB (roughly) of memory per *process*.

If you're running 32-bit Linux or 32-bit Windows Server, you can use up to 64GB (but still only 3GB per process). It's PAE that makes this possible, it allows for 36-bits of physical memory on a 32-bit system. Starting with XP SP2, Microsoft made it so that memory above 4GB cannot be accessed via PAE except in the server versions of Windows. This is also the reason why the 32-bit XP SP2 & Vista only recognize 3.25GB (or so) - the motherboard relocates the last 0.75GB (or so) of memory, it puts it above the 4GB barrier, to make room just under the 4GB barrier for I/O memory. And since Microsoft has made Windows ignore everything above 4GB, it ignores the rest of your memory.

Thanks for the explanation, although I still find it funny. Lame port + no local Steam availability = no sale for me.
