Default 7 Days to Die: Horde Night!

June 28th, 2017, 15:17
Okay, I've been playing this game for over a week now, but I kept restarting before Day 7 until last night. Goodness! The zombies swarm on every 7th day, something I did not know. I thought I was safe in my hotel bunker. Not! The zombies ATE through the bottom level of the hotel and climbed right up to me. I jumped out a window and ran like a little child with zombies everywhere. I unloaded clips of ammo and ended up going through most of my weapons before the night was over. I lived but I basically have to start all over. My base is destroyed, though they left the loot alone.

Fun, fun, fun!

P.S. Sledgehammer for the win, baby!

P.P.S. How did I survive? I got ahead of the zombies finally and hunkered down in a grave. I was never so happy for daylight.

I was playing this game last winter for a couple of weeks. It certainly is a lot of fun, but I'm currently waiting for more content updates before I'll start it again. Maybe I can even talk my wife into playing it co-op with me.

Oh, and if you think the 7th night was hard, wait for the 14th. They'll get progressively worse until night 49th. At that point my base was a concrete bunker with a moat and drawbridge.

Spoiler – A16 Patch Notes
Oh goody! In update 16 they're adding solar power and electricity. There will be turrets and spotlights and yet more zombies. I'll post the patch notes in an edit, to see if you're interested in jumping back in. This patch is in beta, atm.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one, but I'm hesitant to get it now because my past experiences with early access games have not been great. The fact that is still only in Alpha also gives me more reason to steer clear for now.

Reading your posts about it reminded me about another game I'd been meaning to go back to, State of Decay. In fact, you motivated me to purchase the new version of it which is on sale right now.

Since you seem to be enjoying 7 Days so much, you might want to check out SoD

Yeah, when I wrote my post I actually checked if there were news for the game and I saw that Alpha 16 was out. It sounds pretty nifty and I'm kind of tempted to start a new game.

When I played Alpha 15 it was already a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It had fewer bugs than most games have on their release day, and none of them were game breaking. What made me stop playing was the lack of content after a certain point, but I was playing solo and I guess in multiplayer it's even more entertaining.

I haven't run into any noticeable bugs in my play.

There are 4 biomes in the game, which is set in a fictional Arizona, iirc. You have a small mountainous (snow) region, a grasslands/forest area, a burned forest area and then a desert. Each area has slightly different ingredients that you can use for food and crafting.

You can choose to bunker up or just travel and hide during the night when the zombies roam. You can also go Rambo and just fight everything, but I don't suggest that style of play. The game is the most fun playing as a scavenger who bunkers up at night; at least for my style of play.

The game will be in alpha for a long, long time. They already have a plan for alpha's 17 and 18. I don't expect this game will ever hit a full release till the devs are bored of playing with it. The MP will disappear at that point I imagine. Right now there are a bunch of active MP servers. I don't indulge, naturally.

The game will just dump you naked with one can of water, a cup of chili, a bandage and let you try to live. It's a lot of fun, but there really isn't any true roleplaying except in choosing which skills to focus on.

There are dozens of skills that will improve with use but can also be purchased as you level up. You could, for instance, focus purely on scavenging till you hit the 100 cap and then move to something else. You could also choose to slowly level a group of skills together so that you're not too weak to survive a fight. It's up to you.

Are the biomes and loot generated each time you start a new game in single-player? Also, how long is the day/night cycle? Can you wait/sleep to make time pass?

It sounds like a fun little sandbox. I'm looking for something with a little more narrative right now though.

So, there's no narrative - just a pointless sandbox?

As far as I know they're planning to add a story driven single player campaign, but I have no idea when/if that's gonna happen. When I was playing Alpha 15 the game had some very basic quests (kill x in y amount of time) and an NPC (shopkeeper), but that was about it. Oh, and treasure hunting.

Sounds good. I also note that it has cooperative multiplayer, which can turn most sandboxes into meaningful experiences.

Will have to check it out sometime

Still playing this and now I'm well over 100 hours. I rarely live to day 7, but that's because I always start over if I die. There is a respawn built in the game, but it doesn't make sense to me. If I croak, I start another toon. What is addictive about this? Building a good base and scavenging all the materials you need to live. It isn't easy and I still haven't visited all the areas of the game. There are some great places to loot, but they're crawling with zombies and I'm not real good with the combat. I've got it set about as low as it can go. I'm on the "Don't hurt me" level of difficulty, I have the zombies set to never run, and I've got the lowest level of zombie spawn there is and I still die

I could live if I was more careful, but I don't really mind restarting so it never bothers me if I become Zombie Food.

The game starts you near a dilapidated house with a letter from Noah. Noah lives in a settlement that is safe from the zombies and will invite you if you prove yourself. There is no more story than that to the whole game. As far as I can tell, the settlement and Noah do not really exist yet, just a group of isolated traders at mini-settlements where the trader is the only living soul (Traitor Joel's).

You are alone and will need to be almost 100% self efficient to live. You start off knowing nothing, but can learn skills by practice and also from finding and reading books. Reading a book can teach you a basic level of skill to make a pistol from parts, learn to build an iron sledgehammer, make exploding crossbow bolts, etc.

You will build basic tools to create/repair places to live. It could be just an overnight shelter or a fortress. You can assemble a motorcycle and attach a shopping cart to carry more loots, etc.

And you can get married so your wife (or husband, whatever) brings their fair share of stuff?

Sorry, I just can't. Kill me, but when I see "survival" knowing what it is about, night falls instantly on my eyes.
It's not all bad, seems that the game is far superior to Neo scavenger rubbish, but it's still not for me.

Sounds good, nut. Reminds me of my early Minecraft experiences (with even more zombies). I actually bought and played this a couple times but stopped after the second death.

The game should really come with tutorial video on what to do the first couple days. Unlike Minecraft, time wasted is compounded night after night, with seemingly more and more zombies chasing you. It's hard not to feel a bit oppressively lost.

Yeah, there is a tutorial now that encourages you to build construction tools and repair your house, but nothing that really emphasizes the attacks that happen on the 7th day. I was totally unprepared for my first horde experience. The zombies ATE my house and I was running till dawn. I finally hid in a grave next to a coffin for the final couple hours. My 2nd horde night was spent on top of a hotel and they never even made it to the top before dawn. I actually climbed down to get some kills around 3 am. Horde zombies should have better treasure, imo.

I actually don't use the beginner house for more than one night and sometimes not even that. Depending on where the game dumps me, I try to find a spot that already has either a workbench or a forge. Having one or both of those on the first day really boosts production of a strong base.

My current game dumped me next to a lake with a cabin that has a forge. I've broken into it and started harvesting all the trees, rock, and grass. I'll fortify during the day and practice my crafting at night. I try to balance between weapons and armor so that I have decent protection for the rest of the week. The cabin already has stonework on the bottom block, so it is much harder for the zombies to come in from the walls. They typically attack the door and I have two layers of iron on those already. I hope to put spikes around the whole base before nightfall. Wood spikes are great for slowing the zombies down enough that I can take them out with my wood bow from the roof.

I'm real close to one of the abandoned towns, so I'll try to go there on day 2 and see if I can find a schematic for a crossbow or a book on pistols. I need something more powerful than a gray level bow. If I don't find a book, I'll practice making wood bows till I get my weapon-smithing up to 300 quality. I don't want a wimpy ranged weapon later in the week.

I lub this game

I'm just running a couple mods as they're a pain to install right now. I've got a backpack expansion. Instead of 32 slots of vanilla, I run with a 45 slot backpack. They have backpacks that will hold 200 items, but that seems overkill to me. The 2nd mod puts the food/water/temperature indicators on your hud. This should be in vanilla.

I was browsing some games last night and noticed there's a PS4 version of this. I think that's the first time I've ever seen a console release for something that's still in Alpha.

Looking at the reviews though, the console versions must be pretty bad. Both the PS4 and XBone scored in the 35-45 range on Metacritic, and the user reviews aren't much higher.

I believe it. The only reason it works on pc is that everything is xml so it is easily edited come bug time. On PS4 and Xbone, it has to go through the vetting process and these guys are mostly n00bs.

A lot of the fixes happen from the community and then TFP adds it to a patch. Once a new update comes out, there will be several versions of it before the bugs are ironed out. For instance, I would not suggest anyone new to the game to play Alpha 16. It is buggy. You can play most of the older alphas by just picking it from the list in Steam.
