Custom Companions vs Story Companions

What do you miss out on if you don't ever use any of the Story companions? Do you miss out on anything significant? I don't mind if I miss out on companion banter and chats, etc. But do you miss out on XP and loot by not using Story Companions?

I haven't played PoE but… In these types of games story companions often have their own quest lines with rewards of some type.
