Probably Diablo. As others have pointed out though, it's a hard sub-genre to properly define, so I guess it's mainly down to perspective. For example, even NWN: HotU could be considered a dungeon crawler, as dungeon crawling is the main activity. If that one's "valid", it's certainly my top choice, ahead of Diablo.

As I said, everything is valid if you think so
NWN: HotU and Diablo are both great.

I have to agree with Diablo 1 being the best Dungeon Crawler. Gotta love the ambiance.

All this love for Diablo 1 is making me think I should give it a go sometime. I tried the second one but it didn't grab me, never tried the first.

Another vote for Diablo 1. I loved it when it was first released, it actually chilled my blood whenever I fired it up. I tried playing it recently (about a year ago?) but couldn't get back into it…
If Icewind Dale passes as dungeon crawler, it gets my vote instead of Diablo 1 though

Disliked Diablo 1 when it first came out; way too simplistic. Was a big let down after doom and Wolfenstein.

I'm not sure how much I would like Diablo now though. There's a good chance I'd simply be reminded of Diablo 2 and then swap, as it pretty much set a new bar for the hack'n slash genre (a genre Diablo basically created to be fair).
Playing through Starcraft, and discussing Diablo at the same time, has left me thinking that early Blizzard might not get enough credit for setting the bar in various genres. Chris Metzen, Mike Morhaime etc really nailed it back then.

Diablo is pathetically simplistic these days.
That's why I always try my best to make people aware of the excellent "Lord of Terror" campaign for NWN.
It's a truly excellent recreation of Diablo and its expansion (along with addtional content) for Neverwinter Nights.
Considering the engine, it does a very good job of establishing the atmosphere of Diablo - and it uses the same music which was a very vital aspect of that whole gothic and oppressive setting.

I think an experience like Diablo I is most valued when had by the date of release. All of it was novel. I remember the scores (both for Tristram and the dungeons), the ominous lines of dialogue, the way I was scared when exploring the dark corners of those demonic levels.
I remember the first time I faced the Butcher (dying in the process, of course). I remember Lazarus's dark story. I recall the first time I was betrayed by that multicolored moon clan warrior.
Grimswold's asking me if he could do something for me brings me tender memories, as does staying a while and listening to Deckard, which always made me a little more enlightened (or with a better piece of equipment). Being ripped off by Wirt really pissed me off; crossing the river to buy a thousand potions from the witch never got old.
I remember being exhilirated when my look changed for the first time I wore a superior piece of chest armor. Even the sound cues of money or items falling were epic. Above all, I was shocked and dismayed by the terrible twist when all was said and done.
Really, nothing beats having played Diablo I back in the day.

I agree. It doesn't take more than listening to the soundtrack and it'll bring back a host of memories. However, I genuinely think the current version of Diablo 3 (after all the patches etc) is a far superior game in terms of gameplay mechanics and what not, but it didn't have the same impact at the time of release.

That said, I really like Diablo III for what it is, but, in my opinion, just as Fallout 3 and 4, it is a far cry from its roots.
