Has the site or hosting site been down today (Dec 26) ? Cloudfare keeps reporting the site down (well unreachable); but not sure if it is just them or an actual problem with the site.

It is the regular thing. Someone is accessing the site at a high frequency, causing a starvation of available resources for PHP. Most of the time the monitoring scripts restart the services, but occasionally a manual restart is needed.

Someone in the Ukraine had a lot of time on his or her hands this Christmas and apparently yesterday, according to CloudFlare, most of our visitors did not come from the US (which is normally the case) but from China.

From Ukraine - that's most probably some VPN (ab)user.
From China - those are actual people as China banned VPNs. Several billions do play PUBG but there are a few millions who are singleplayer RPG fans.
If only I knew how to write welcome in chinese graphemes.
