Hisotrical Setting definition - " Historical setting is an aspect of setting that pertains to when events occur and when characters live or interact. A historical setting is a point in time. Literary characters cannot see nor touch their historical setting because historical setting pertains to time which is intangible, but all human actions must occur in time. I'd like a fantasy version of Ancient Greece during the Greco-Persian wars in the 5th century BC, where the Persians are replaced by an empire of monstrous humanoids, the Athenians are scholarly magic-wielding battle mages, the Spartans are martial monks, and the Pagan Deities are real entities. ;)

The ancient world is a totally underused background. As far as I know there are very few games set in this time period. Age of Decadence and Titan Quest come to mind, but there is so much one could do with it. It seems the middle ages and the renaissance are really the only historical periods, besides the modern age, which are largely used in RPGs. The 19th century has been used in Arcanum and one of the Ultima spinoffs, but it is also painfully underused. There are also many non-European or non-American periods which are like never used, because I guess Americans and Europeans don't want to buy games in any place they aren't familiar with.

I agree with forgottenlor that many non-european and non-american (also non-japanese) settings are often forgotten and that is a shame. I would love to see a game in the old empires of places like India, China or Mali, for instance. Sometimes I get sick of Medieval Europe and unfortunately, there aren't so many options and the ones that exist also repeat a lot.
