Default Pillars of Eternity II - Review @Gaming on Linux

May 15th, 2018, 06:12
Gaming on Linux offered their thoughts on Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.

With that said, there are some caveats that could put people off. For example, itís not a game that would draw in newcomers that easily. As well as the choices from the previous game are explained and integrated, I can see new players feel a little overwhelmed by the weight of the in-game history. Combined with the open nature of the game, it could also be hard for them to decide what they should be doing and, most importantly, why. Some part of this is due to the limited nature of the quest journal; it could use more options for filtering and sorting quests and people.

For those who persist or are coming back to the series with positive expectations, however, I think that theyíll find an engaging and delightful adventure waiting for them. I can only hope that Obsidian will take stock of what worked and what didnít and apply it to their future games. Warts and all, I enjoyed my time in the Deadfire and thereís very little else thatís available to play that matches the scope and loving attention to detail found in the game.
Thanks rjshae!

Agreed that new players will be mildly lost lorewise, but the quest journal is auto sorted and easy to navigate if you don't mind reading…

Yeah, it's cool that more games are coming out on Linux. Break up that Windows lock hold on the PC game market. (Or am I dating myself here?)

Putting it on Linux could make it easier to port over to Android

If you stay away from Windows-bound middleware, Unity should build for Linux quite nicely. I think it's more a question of taking on the potential cost of supporting another platform, for a small market. A Linux version is often offered on KS, as I guess we Linux types like to stick it to the Man, and are a good bet for crowd funding indies.

The first one was also on linux. Some of my favorite games on linux:
borderlands 2
divinity original sin
most of the total war games (I have played several on linux)
-
I have several other big titles on linux but my linux box is at my travel location so can't check now - btw I played the first pillars on linux.

(I'm told civilization 4 will run fine on wine but haven't tried myself - but might rebuy for this)

Knowing that the game would be on Linux, too, was one of the main reasons for me to support it on KS.

And yeah, it works very fine, had no problems with it.
