Creepy & eerie (adventure) games anyone?

Silent Hill series were good horror adventure game. I only played SH2, SH3 and SH4 on PC, and the best for me was SH2. Personally the series provided the darkest, most depressive and disturbing horror experience. The control scheme sucks though, unless you play it on console. You can see the intro and other related stuff on youtube.
Indigo Prophecy (or Fahrenheit in the Europe), released couple years ago and i heard sold very well, about 800,000 units worldwide. It was quite nice - although it was not as scary as i hoped for. Contain mature contents though.
Other than that, i'm keeping an eyes on the following upcoming non-adventure horror games:
1) Aliens (RPG game, in development by Obsidian but until now barely any details available)
2) Alone in the Dark (the fifth game in the series). It's episodic action-based game.
3) Alan Wake - Also not much info; A psychological action thriller - develop by Remedy.
4) Aliens: Colonial Marines - an action game, develop by the well known Gearbox Software, to be released in late 2008.

I think a friend of mine has Black Mirror. Perhaps I could get him to lend it to me.

Well, I have played all the released games in this thread and I have to say that unfortunately the scariest ones are not really adventuregames. Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is scary, and a damn fine game, but it is an FPS. Condemned: Criminal Origins is brutal and one of the creepiest games I played, but it's also a FPS. The Silent Hill series and The Suffering have lots of action in them. Fatal Frame is really scary, but even if it does'nt have guns, it's still an actiongame.

Not exactly a horror game but Vampire Bloodline's Scene at the haunted mantioned scared the bee geezus out of me.
Silent hill is scary in a disgustingly, perverted, make you want to take a shower and tear your eyeballs out kind of way.
The suffering wasn't that bad but once again the whole point of the game seems to be to show you as much gore as possible.
There are a few more that don't have to rely on gore to scare you, Call of Cthulhu while definatly had its gory momements but didn't have to rely on them. The plot and characters, plus the setting made that game a step above the rest. Give me an intelligent horror game that doesn't have to use those tricks to scare you. Something like hitch's movies. Now that man was the master of suspense and storytelling without having to rely on blood and guts. Only if Hitch was born in our age, he could of been one of the best computer game makers ever.

Criminal Origins? You serious? I'm not 100% sure we're talking about the same game here, though… IIRC I tried it once. Played it for an hour or so. The game was all about beating up raving junkies with a pipe. Just over and over and over and over again. Got old pretty fast.
I forced myself to play it onwards - but after I'd beaten up the 100th crackhead.. I hit uninstall.

I have to agree, Criminal Origins was complete crap. It did have the ability to make you look over your shoulder once in a while, but other than that the gameplay was very shallow and repetitive.
Call of Cthulu DCotE was another big letdown for me, but that might only be because I was so hyped for it to begin with. I wouldn't recommend paying more than $10 for it, and don't expect to be blown away.
Penumbra: Overture is a great budget title, and is definitely worth picking up. I finished that one a while back when it was first released, and I'm anxiously awaiting the sequel.

I just started playing it again, and it's just as scary as the first time. There are so many times that you really *hate* what's going to happen when you slide open that bolt or hit that button, but you know you have to do it anyway. I really like the aesthetic -- the graphics are nothing special technically, but the art design is great. It really deserves a better PC port, though.

Bah! Petty squabbles about minor details.
As long as it's sick & disturbing all is well, right?!

Since we're discussing adventures :
Runaway 3 is in development.
The German site "Adventurecorner" shows 2 links - everything in French language.

Well, if genre doesn't matter then the underground complexes in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are some of the scariest places I've experienced in a game.
However, you are right! I loved the underground lab in STALKER. It was awesome and very disturbing.

Okay.
A resolution of 640x480 without HW acceleration probably doesn't meet your criterion of 'high quality visuals'.
Besides, the game is a) oldish (did I mention 640x480 - max?) and b) contains fast real-time action.
But…
…but I cannot pass by a thread with the keywords 'creepy' and 'adventure' without mentioning my favorite game of all times - Realms of the Haunting.

EDIT: It's a dos game? Might have to try that on my dedicated dos machine.

I agree with Jaz. If you have access to a dedicated DOS machine, don't miss 'Realms of the Haunting.' It's probably one of the most underrated games ever done. Just a fantastic game. 'The Undying' was really good as well for a first person creepy shooter. 'Sanitarium' by Dreamforge (did they ever do a bad game?) was excellent as well, and more of a traditional point and click adventure. Also 'The Suffering' is one I played through, but really enjoyed; it has more of a 'Tomb Raider' type interface as I recall.

RotH IS a DOS game, so go for it.
Sick and disturbing? Hmmm… disturbing, sure. And it's really scary at times. But sick… I wouldn't call RotH sick. At least not sick in a mad-butcher-serial-killer-gore-splatter-rectal-torture way. Some of the NPCs are, sure, but it's not a game-defining feature. RotH is a solid, creepy and massive haunted house adventure with interesting characters, a twisted story and tons of atmosphere-setting FMVs. You might call the ending sick, but I'd rather call it disturbing
. Personally, I thought some of the places and characters in Zork: Nemesis were sicker than what RotH has to offer.
The only game that ever came close in terms of (similar) atmosphere was Undying (Sir Markus mentioned it as well), but it was more of a shooter than RotH.
