Favorite Star Wars movie - and why

I'm afraid I'm in the camp that found the alteration of Luke's relationship to Leia a real lolfest. The whole point of the dynamic in the first movie was the traditional love triangle between the beautiful princess and her two knights, one in shining armour, the other the no-good womaniser.

Suddenly in the very next movie this dynamic just vanished into thin air, suddenly Luke and Leia are brother and sister, but not only that, the no-good womaniser had suddenly become the shining knight to Luke's beautiful princess. So Leia is left with only one romantic choice, the no-good womaniser & then just kinda tags along for the rest of the movie providing sit-com style marriage banter with Solo as if they'd already been married 10 years.

While the big set pieces are great, there are great swathes of the movie that are dry as a bone. If the Yoda planet scenes aren't your favourite Star Wars scenes then ESB has a huge intermission/toilet break. These scenes also have very little pay-off as Luke loses regardless of any new powers or knowledge. Cloud city is mostly unmemorable beyond the Darth Vader scenes.

Whenever I hear people prasie ESB it's usually just Hoth & the snow stuff that's got the magic, & I agree that the first half hour or so is pretty much perfect cinema, well, aside from it should have been Luke saving Solo, what with Luke being… the main hero?

Luke I'm your sister oh man I kissed my sister.



On a serious note as one point Leia probably was Luke's love interest, but at some point either Lucas or a scriptwriter had a better idea, and the rest is history as we watched it.

The early script also suggested Vader was not Luke's father.

I think most people find the Solo / Leia relationship as a something that worked incredibly well onscreen. Luke didn't factor in and whoever wrote him out of the equation made a good call.

Also, again the Jedi Twins was inspired by something already being kicked around Hollywood. Maybe that wasn't the original intention but it expands on ideas he was pouring over.

I should think there's plenty of love for the paranormal around the RPG scene, but yeah, you'd definitely get flack if you made a big thing of it, lol. I've no doubt I have things that could define me as extreme, not sure though, as I probably would avoid those topics subconsciously anyway? Who knows, I'm sure my extremities will be exposed one day. I'm not sure if this site allows the exposing of extremities though

I actually just re-watched that. It was better the second time around for me. The whole long-chase thing made a bit more sense. I still don't see why nobody has been using FTL missiles to blast big ships or even planets, though. They could have just pointed a half dozen empty X-wings at the Death Star, hit the light speed engines, and they would have mangled the thing. Oh well - hardly the first "why didn't they just…" in Star Wars.

I like the whole line that was shown before the sequel. It seems to me that the directors worked very hard and they shouldn’t have to continue shooting the sidelines for the sake of money. The Lord of the Rings did not extend) The Hobbit is not considered

The Last Jedi ruined Star Wars completely i think. It's one of the most incompetent big movies i've seen. Absolute garbage.

My favorite was the very first one. We walked in just as they were attacking Princess ship at one of those theater that had the extra large screens (70mm?); they don't make theater like that - and as a little kid it was like 'wow'. Today I think the movie sucks but back then it was an amazing experience. Since none of the other star war movies (new or old) have been much better that one remains my favorite. Mind you the new ones are technically better but they always seem to just miss the mark - from Adam Driver wonderful performance to Jar Jar touch. I have to admit the new ones had potential if they had done just a little better with the story and cast - but I'll stick with the first one mostly because as a kid it was like 'wow'.

The long-chase thing was awful, I have to admit that.

But, the rest of the movie was so good that it compensated.

To me, I found it refreshingly unpredictable and bold in several ways.

Also, I didn't see the whole Luke thing coming at all - and I found it to be the perfect ending for his character and it tied everything together beautifully.

The lightspeed ramming was fantastic - and the Snoke fight was great, too.

The people trying to point out inconsistencies crack me up. Mostly because they're all Star Wars fans, which means they don't care about inconsistencies in the first place - they just forgot that they don't.

Then they proceed to hit pretty much nothing in the entire trilogy

Hey! Ben had been out of circulation for a long time! The original clone troopers were much better shots. How could he have known the Empire was going to start shoving anyone that can fit into a stormtrooper suit?

What's wrong with the long chase?

It is weird what inconsistencies seem to matter to different people. Even as a kid watching Star Wars, I knew a "parsec" wasn't a measure of time and thought it was pretty sad that the writers didn't even bother to find out what the term meant. I also knew that it was crazy for the engines in space to be roaring (literally, in the case of TIE fighters) - but that was fun so I didn't mind.

My favorite Star Wars movies are

1) Rogue One
Why?
Very little Jedi crap, lots of military action and enough grey vs grey to make my day. Big plus A:
Vader's home run.
Big plus B:


2) Empire Strikes Back
Why?
The Empire wins that round.

3) Revenge of the Sith.
Why?
It's a bit darkish, isn't it? Good. Good…

Honorable mention:
Solo.
Why?
I found it surprisingly entertaining. And those Imperial Army field scenes…

The current trilogy? Ahem … well … nope. Don't like that stuff so far. Apart from the disco foxes. Perhaps I will like the last of these movies, yet I still doubt it. I can't stand watching those First Order buffoons.

In my opinion, The Clone Wars animated series is still a lot better than most of the movies.
Yeah, sure, a series has a lot more time for characterization and exposition, which is why Revenge of the Sith is so much better if you watched the whole series between Attack of the Clones and Revenge.
Good they'll finally produce and publish those episodes that originally fell victim to Mickey Mouse.
Star Wars Rebels also grew on me after season 1. I mean, come on, .
Now let's see how I'll like all those new series that either a) already run or b) are in production…

Ah, if only Zahn's books had been done instead of going back to Phantom Menace…

My favourite is the original one followed by Return of the Jedi and then Empire Strikes Back. If only Return of the Jedi didn't have Ewoks but Wookies instead the final battle on Endor would of been less silly but otherwise I liked it well enough.

Empire, hands down.

I liked Rogue One but the big problem with it is the ending: how are we supposed believe Leia and the officer being strangled would tell such an obvious fib like they were on a diplomatic mission when they were obviously right there stealing plans.

It takes away from the obvious subterfuge of and intrigue of the imagined event and makes it into a big action thingy.

Its the same with the appeal to the Imperial Senate. In the first movie it implies the Senate is a thing that's dieing when it was dead by the Clone Wars thanks to "emergency powers".

These may not be full retcons but its the slippery slope you get into with prequels.

Its the same thing with the whole Sith Lord idea in general. If Jedi are dispassionate, and the Sith are motivated by emotion then why is Vader so calculating and brooding (I know what your thinking, NOOOOOOO!)
