Some interviews for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum from GamesIndustry and VentureBeat.

From GamesIndustry:

"Conflict is important for storytellers and that's already in the character," he says. "We have these two characters talking to him constantly. We think we have a unique approach, and if we do this game right I don't think there'll be much space for anyone doing a Gollum game, because we've already done it."

Fichtelmann also assures that this won't simply retell his story, as depicted in the books and the films. Instead, the aim is to explore the gaps and answer questions like how Gollum became the strange creature he is.

Naturally, it's too early to talk about gameplay, but Daedalic will carefully consider what mechanics will be the right fit for Gollum. He's unlikely to be single-handedly battling a cave troll, but we're told stealth, climbing and "the fact he's quite tricky as a person" are definitely ingredients you'll see in the final product.

From VentureBeat:

GamesBeat: This is interesting, because I few years ago, I noted how people should bring their licenses to you for storytelling adventure games. And here we are with The Lord of the Rings.

Fichtelmann: This is one of our solutions for facing the storytelling situation. This is our philosophy when we do storytelling games. Are we doing something timeless? When you look into our 2D adventure games, which we put out over the last games -- for example, the Deponia series, that feels like a playable Futurama. This universe will have the same freshness 20 years from now. That's the case with The Lord of the Rings. It's been around for 60 years. Amazon is planning the most expensive TV series ever.

In order to advance the development of Gollums character, they are going to make him an LGBTQ+-* WormShelf FishShelf Trans MaleGirlNeuter character. His weapon will be a large, bendy, 20" silicon "club".

Sigh... one of the richest worlds in fantasy existence and we still can't get one great, deep single player RPG set within it.

A real shame, indeed. Usually happens too, the IP is flung about to anyone paying its relatively modest price. Real good companies want to work on their own IPs to shoot for the million dollar baby themselves rather than feeding someone else's million dollar baby. Average companies want a quick tap on the money that a well loved and known IP brings only with its name.

In the end, nobody wins. Including the fans of the IP.

A few years back EA had an open world LOTR game with RPG aspects in development, but being EA they cancelled project as they usual do with most promising games.:(

Not an RPG but I enjoyed Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, action games a bit similar to Assassin's Creed games though with a bit of RPG elements in there, set in the Lord of the Rings world during the approximate times of the 4 books.

It's very difficult to craft a storyline in such an iconic world which doesn't either 1) follow too closely what we have already seen and read or 2) doesn't go so far off to be not much related to what we know and not interesting as a result.

The reproach is already made to the FFG incoming RPG. It is stated they will go a less canonic path with add ons.

That said, Conan is more open to crafting a storyline that is less pressured by canonic constraints. And no sp rpg either.
