Default Shortlisting the GOTY 2019 - Released

January 9th, 2020, 14:17
I am preparing the GOTY of 2019, but found there are loads of games in our database that show they have been released in 2019. The full list is below. The number of posts is the number of news postings made for the game. The comments are the number of comments about the game and the ratio is comments/(posts +1).

The goal is to shortlist the list of games to a set of about 30.

One way of reducing it would be to take the top 20 in comments (they had apparently the most traction) and add from the remaining games the top 10 in ratio. This results in the following list:

Age of Wonders: Planetfall
Borderlands 3
Breach
Disco Elysium
Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest
Dungeon Of Dragon Knight
Fade to Silence
Fantasy General II
Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
Forged of Blood
Greedfall
Grimshade
Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox
Nomads of the Fallen Star
Operencia: The Stolen Sun
Outward
Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory
Pathway
Phoenix Point
Queen's Wish: The Conqueror
Rogue Empire: Dungeon Crawler RPG
Rune II
Shenmue 3
Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones
Sunless Skies
The Outer Worlds
The Sinking City
Thea 2: The Shattering
Theseus: Journey to Athens
WARSAW

If there are better ideas, please share them here.

Good base list.
Here are some potential additions:

I do remember some memebers praising Tales of Vesperia so maybe it should be added to nominations. Same goes for Octopath Traveler - I've avoided these two because of my paranoic fear of grinding.

The Surge 2 and Code Vein are both apparently awsome darksoulslikes, can't know if true, but maybe both also deserve a nomination.

NNK1 to some is second coming, to me was turd in a shiny package. In other words I liked NNK2 more, but maybe there is a reason to nominate the first one as plenty of people love style over substance titles and if there was such category to vote for, I'd pick NNK1 as #1.

Had to check Portia release date… Thought it's a 2018 game. I have to admit loving it for what it is. Would I vote for it in the end dunno, but some might as it's sillyness is fun.

From a method perspective, that choice is as good as any. Even if we had a rating system, we'd likely still be short of feedback on the more niche games.

After rethinking my own selection, that list seems to have my no 1, 2, 4, but misses my no. 3 (Streets of Rogue). Which I guess is fine, since it is rather niche and I have not played some promising candidates like Disco.

You're getting old when pretty much any goty contenders are still on the backlog. Well, I *did* play Outer Worlds and Slay the Spire!

Idea for new category! Game of the last 3 years!

No vote from me this year. Even if I haven't played a game I'll sometimes vote for it in these polls because I know I will be playing it in the near future and I've liked what I've seen and heard about it and so am pre-emptively giving it the vote I'll never be able to give it: That of "it made me want to buy it at least" even if it turns out I didn't like it.

However, this year, those I think I will be playing in the future are not games I'd describe as RPGs, such as AoW: Planetfall and Slay the Spire (which is a game I did actually play for a long time this year) and etc, while those that I think are good wholesome RPGs are not in a format that I play, such as the blobber Legends of Amberland and the aRPG Children of Morta. both of which I am hoping do well, but I cannot in good conscience vote for myself.

I bet there is a great game on there that I just haven't heard about yet. I doubt the poll will bring it to light though and researching them all at this late stage isn't going to happen immediately.

I would question whether Age of Wonders or Fantasy General, even though they may be very good games, should be considered on an rpg list. I haven't played either of them, but I have played the other games in the series, and thought of them as strategy games.

Good point. Someone on the team who knows the games should label the Non-RPGs, so they do not end up on the RPG list.

I feel Dragon Quest XI could be added. I'm not a DQ fan, but from a friend that is, it's one of the best in the series apparently. Other than that nothing else stands out to me.

The Surge 2 and Code Vein are both apparently awsome darksoulslikes, can't know if true, but maybe both also deserve a nomination.
If Code Vein and The Surge 2 are to be added (they are good games indeed), I suggest Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is added too. It's really a Star Wars skinned Dark Souls with a good story and a bunch of fun to be had if you do like Dark Souls-like games and can tolerate the Star Wars universe.

RPGWatch Steam Curator (Games with a 2019 release date)
  1. Outward
  2. Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
  3. Good Wars: The Complete Legend
  4. GreedFall
  5. Disco Elysium
  6. Vestaria Saga: War of the Scions

(Enderal, Knights of the Chalice and others were released earlier)

So I think Good Wars: The Complete Legend and Vestaria Saga: War of the Scions should be added. Vestaria was released very late in 2019 and Good Wars got not enough newsbits - I blame myself

I thought those were tactical combat games, not rpgs. I don't think it hurts anything to add them though.

Both have character development and use equipment, so they qualify as tactics RPGs.
They will not win the GOTY title, but they deserve to be in the top 30.

How can you have any form of combat without it being tactical?

Surely even in Skyrim you have to use some form of tactics to beat the whateveritis?

I feel sure that even in Skyrim you can't defeat the whateveritis by just standing there and casting heal on the whateveritis?

Dark Souls is almost entirely a tactics game, for example.

In every game you need tactics to win. I use the sub-genre name tactics RPG for RPGs that are focussed much more on tactical combat than on story and/or exploration.

In English these RPGs are often called strategy RPGs as well. In German Taktik is short term planning and Strategie is long term planning. So I prefer the term tactics.

It could replace the Paranoia game. I suspect the comments on that are divided between "can they do this" and "they weren't able to do this", depending on the time of year.

@Andrew23, yeah, me too - and I'm talking about the first list. I have wish-listed a couple and plan to buy a couple more once they show up on Steam but I'm now fully a year behind when it comes to games. (Though there's some DLC I've played soon after release.)

Steams game of the year was Sekiro. Maybe chuck that on the list and see what happens?
