Default Children of the Nile Updated Content

For those into the city builders, Tilted Mill--descendant of the devs who built some of the Impressions games, is releasing a new demo for this older title, and some updated content for a scheduled re-release. You can read about it here at Worthplaying.

This is a game that got fairly mediocre reviews IIRC, so hopefully this content will help it out a bit.

EDIT: Also on the strategy front, Dominions 3 has a truly huge new patch out for those who play this excellent fantasy TB strat game from Ilwinter.

actually out of 28 reviewers it scored a 75 out of 100
and a solid 8.5 from users votes
http://www.metacritic.com/games/plat…ldrenofthenile

that said it wasn't all that enjoyable of a game for me.
all of these 'modern' city builders have not even come close to the magic of their 2d ancestors.
simcity societes, children of the nile, caesar 4(which i haven't really give much time yet), stronghold 2 and even stronghold legends(though that was probablly the best).
the graphics in the games are great, as are some other aspects.
the problem for me lies in that they all have an empty feeling.
a basic lack of any single player (non sandbox) content is the largest problem i see.
i loved the style of the old games. linked missions in cities, or a campaign. in game heros, or story are also lacking in most of these.
sandbox is the word i least like to hear, as especially in modern 3d games it almost is equivalent with nice engine/empty world.
i understand that developers like tilted mill are rather small, but to me whats the point in continuing a great legacy if you can't focus on the things that made their great games come alive.
city builders are loosing the battle to rts in a major way from my vantage.

I have the Childrens of the Nile game - never played too much with it this far. Although it is some fun for me.

I'm slowly making my way through Pharaoh with the Cleopatra expansion pack - definitely my favorite city builder, it hits a sweet spot for me. Caesar 3 was too difficult for me (I was only 12 when I got it though), but many of the features of Zeus/E:RoftMK made things too easy. Not needing any connection between work and housing makes city planning very easy, for example.

I bought CotN when it was released, but it was too much simulation/sandbox and too little game for me. I find it difficult to keep up my motivation when there aren't any victory conditions, and it's practically impossible to lose as well, unlike Dwarf Fortress.

that falls under the 'old stuff' which i played and enjoyed greatly.
a beautiful game, not quite as fun as zeus/posieden but all of the large projects (canals, great wall, terra cota tombs) were quite awesome as well as the farming. managing all of the farms, with the flooding rice fields, etc. was definetly an all time favourite city building experience.

oh and i've been playing a bit of civ city rome for a bit the past few days. had it for over a year but not until this thread actually did i find the motavation to try it out. i've almost got my $10 in the 6 or so hours i've played it!

Pharoah is definitely challenging with a bit of improvement in Cleopatra as I recall--you have to build very carefully for labor access and "attractiveness" or whatever. I actually had to download some sample spreadsheet work-ups for that one as templates.

I think my favorite is Emperor, with Zeus/Posiedon just for kicks and strange building projects.

Is it true that Children of the Nile has no linked scenario campaigns--it's all sandbox? That would minus out a lot of the challenge, I would think if so.

I don't know. I do know, however, of a small add-on or what it was.

By the way, I never played Zeus, although I do have all of their games.
I once bought them in a box called "Die Großen Imperien" ("The Great Empires"), which includes everything from Ceasar III up to (not including) the First Emperor game.

I don't play it now, because I'm too lazy to always have a CD in the drive - because I have several games requiring a CD in the drive, I always end up with a pile of CDs over my PC, which is something I don't want anymore.

From that point of view, the copy protection requiring me to have the CD in the drive - constantly, of course ! - hinders me from playing and thus enjoying it more.

I too often in the last time wish that companies would release official no-CD patches after several years.

But on the other hand I'm absolutely more-than-sure that the responsibles don't play these games, or otherwise they would've encountered similar "problems" …

My favourite city builder was old Caesar 2. I don't know why I feel that city builders went downhill from that point, might just be me getting less patient with games. Maybe I should try the updated version of Children of the Nile at some point.

I too thought Caesar 3 was a major step down, primarily for losing the province map and I thought the combat bits were better in C2 as well. It wasn't until Zeus I truly got into the new style and I went back to replay C3 and Pharaoh after that.
