Default RPGWatch Feature - Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Preview

April 15th, 2021, 15:26
Purpleblob has spent time in the alpha and beta versions of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and hase some things to say about it.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is based on an existing Paizo adventure path module like its indirect predecessor, Pathfinder: Kingmaker. However, the tone of Wrath is more mature, dark and epic compared to Kingmaker. This time, players embark on a journey to a realm overrun by demons as a Mythic hero, capable of feats beyond mere mortals. Such power comes at a great cost, and you will need to carefully decide how you shape the mysterious powers bestowed upon you or you may end up potentially losing them, along with your companions or your very humanity. The Mythic path system is undoubtably the most unique and important feature in Wrath, as it not only adds a layer of complexity and fun to class building but also a tremendous amount of replayability to the game.

There currently are 6 different mythic paths to choose from in the beta - Angel, Azatas, Aeon, Trickster, Lich and Demon, while the full game will also feature Gold Dragon, Swarm-that-walks and Legend mythic paths. I chose to play as a Trickster heroine in the beta and also tried out the Angel and Azatas mythic paths in the alpha - all 3 runs were extremely enjoyable as Owlcat Games did a fantastic job at fleshing out each path according to their own theme.

As a Trickster, I was able to prank both my allies and enemies alike. While I was a little uneasy tricking my allies, I had great fun playing some nasty jokes on my enemies - there were so many great moments that I felt I could *almost* relate to the Lantern King, the infamous fey prankster Elder in Kingmaker.
More information.

Thanks for the great preview @purpleblob

It's good they improved the replayability, that was my main concern after Kingmaker (partly my fault for using TB all the time, to be fair). With the increased depth and all the possibilities to explore, that's certainly a game one wants to revisit a few times, actually I'm *trying* to settle on a limited number of archetypes and mythic paths (and maybe alignments?) I'd like to test… but there are so many

And to think the Kickstarter was only about one year ago.

I haven't really kept up to date with the new Pathfinder game. Did they take inspiration from the HoMM series for army combat? That has increased my excitement for this game at least twofold. Nice review and looking forward to this game.

Very nice preview, thank you!

It looks like this is shaping up quite nicely and while I admit that I skimmed through part of this preview (since I love to jump into a new rpg quite blindly) the parts I did read about party management and Mythic paths etc. etc. sounded very interesting.

Q3 can't arrive soon enough this year.

Thanks for the great preview @purpleblob, I loved Kingmaker, except for the endgame and Kingdom manager parts, so I am hoping being a general is more fun and that the end game is better balanced, even if that is not the case, I am sure I will enjoy this one.

An excellent preview, Purpleblob, my thanks! Also a certain reminder that I must at some point finally complete my first run-through Pathfinder, I keep getting sidetracked!

From what I have seen and played, yes, but the combat wasn't super fleshed out when I played with only a few unit types at the start. This probably changes as you move forward.

Thanks @purpleblob, a nice read increasing anticipation.

Haha, nice one.

Army combat in chapter 2 only gives you very basic units but the selections will expand in chapter 3 with the full army management kicking in. It looked like you also get to specialise some of the units as well.

Rather be a king then a general but I'll play this the day it's officially released. Though I dare say again I'm more excited about their unannounced Scfi RPG.(Tired of fantasy rpgs)

I'll also be playing RTwP as I don't have the patience for a 200+hr long campaign.

Make sure to participate to this survey then https://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/show…4&postcount=83

That'd be the way to go. TB is handy for named enemies which are usually harder, this allows to study them more easily.

Well Kingmaker took me over 300 hrs but that was with three characters with different alignments. I can just imagine the playtime would double if I played it TB.

That survey was short but they have my email now.

Very biased preview, which doesn't add a lot of value to me. If anything I would be interested on a more scrutinising point of view as I've already decided I'm going to get this game as soon as I can confirm that it doesn't have game breaking bugs.

Still, when everyone has only good things to say about a game, it's a good sign, so here's hoping.

It's all good, I don't think it's a bad review. In fact I think it's good and very informative!

It's just at this point I've heard and read all what is great about the game, and miss more the point of view of someone who is not honeymooning into the game to potentially save myself from another Wasteland 3 launch crash and burn. You're doing good in my opinion @purpleblob, and apologies if my post was a bit apathetic in a generally positive thread. Keep it up, please, as you see everyone (including me) is reading your progress updates and gaining a lot of valuable information from them.

You can practically say your reports are what convincecd me to get the game at launch, bar it being too buggy in which case I'll still purchase it, at a bit later date.
