Aren't fights boring? In the video I saw, the player had to spend a lot of time just firing at enemies, and both were always using the same style of combat. That looked very repetitive.

So, what are your first impressions of the game now?
I think it's solid enough from a gameplay standpoint, but I don't care for the overall vibe. The story and characters are a little too outlandish for my taste. I still think there's fun to be had for people who aren't bothered by the style, but wait for a sale.

I'm pretty sure Biomutant is a fun game, but it's possibly not for everyone, and add to that the high expectations that were built on the game, which usually lead to excessively harsh scores when the game is not all that amazing.

I'm about 10 hours in now. I'm definitely enjoying it, but it's not going to appeal to a lot of people.
The combat is kind of janky - think Mordor/Batman with less sticky targeting. Combat is not balanced - ranged weapons are vastly superior. Mainly because the attack animation speed to damage output on melee is underwhelming. They do start occasionally throwing enemies that are immune to ranged damage and heavy hitting chargers at you in the mid teens, but they aren't in every fight. Difficulty curve is on the easy side, and gets easier the more exploring/crafting/combat focused level ups you do. If combat is a big lever for you in action games, you'll likely want to skip this one.
I like the weird language and British narrator as it fits with the theme and story. I totally get why it turns some people off though.
Exploration is more towards the PB side - if you see something odd there's something there almost every time. Some areas do feel a bit empty for their size. It's more like Zelda than a typical action game when it comes to fight pacing. The puzzles have different skins, but they're all the same system. It makes sense from a design perspective considering the team size, but it will get samey due to the size of the game.
Crafting is great, and I hate crafting in basically every game.
Amusingly I'm far more invested in this than Red Dead Redemption 2 and much more interested in seeing a sequel to this than Days Gone. 6-7 is a pretty fair score depending on preferences.

POE isn't old, either. And it has a VERY dark beginning. It's almost as if it is an requirement for RPGs nowadays to have a dark beginning. The newest Bard's Tale was very dark, too. At least the first part.
I don't see much of the circle going into a different direction now. Maybe Biomutant is just the first step, together with Fenix Rising, perhaps.
And I'm speaking of the PC platform.
