Your fav top 10 games of all time
July 2nd, 2008, 10:22
ok, there's big thread on "what is your favourite RPG of all time" but I don't think there was topic on "your fav top 10 games of all time". So I will start first. Mind that my selections may seem poor and limited to others, but hey, I can't help it.
Here's my list:
1. Baldur's Gate II: SoA & ToB - Anyone could have guessed this one right
2. Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow - I was addicted to pokemon series for good 5 yrs or so
3. Super Mario series - This is a classic one! I don't think there are many of you out there who actually dislikes Super Mario
4. Pokemon Pinball - Again, I was addicted to this for about 5 yrs or so
5. Romance of the Three Kingdom series - Love the story, love the characters in the novel, it just feels incredible to be able to control these fantastic characters.
6. Neverwinter Nights 2 - Closest thing to BG2
7. Civilisation 2 - It was good fun, but I cheated a lot
I suck at strategy games
8. No One Lives Forever 1 - Female James Bond?
9. Neverwinter Night mods (Halo of Flies, Shadow of Souls on Fire, Darkness over Daggerford)
10. Counter Strike - Only FPS I've ever enjoyed
WoW might be in my top 10 very soon…

EDIT: Cant really rank them, but I've picked outstanding games that sometimes represent an entire genre of my liking. Some of the games havent aged well technically but were outstanding in their day. I still have all the non-Amiga titles on my HD.
Supercars 2 : Excellent hotseat action with a drinking buddy on his old Amiga. Perfectly balanced tracks. Sadly not available for PC.
Europa Universalis 2: The most finished (but now somewhat dated) among Paradox Interactive's grand strategy games. Unlike most other strategy games you have tonnes of independent actors and the level of abstraction is just right, minimising tedious micromanagement.
Warlords I: One of the most balanced maps in a turn based strategy game ever. The screen you get when you refuse the enemy surrender is also priceless.
Morrowind with expansions: The most replayable RPG I've ever encountered. It doesnt really do anything exceptionally well (NPCs are dull, the story as well), but there are so many factions and quests that it lasts for many playthroughs. Quantity is a quality in its own.
Gothic 2 with NotR: In many ways the opposite of Morrowind. Very immersive feel to the game with excellent NPCs, but not very replayable.
Baldurs Gate: Less cheesy than it's successor and sparking a series of great RPGs. The infinity engine games are among the best coop RPGs I've ever played.
No Greater Glory: As Lincoln or Davis you give broad orders to your forces in the American Civil War, taking logistics, diplomacy and reelection into account. Very abstract and a bit heavy on the logistics part, but on the whole quite my cup of tea.
Midwinter Skiing, gliding, recruiting locals, blowing things up, sniping advancing enemies from the top of a building…. A classic strategy adventure. Not playable today for technical reasons
North and South Another hotseat favourite from the Amiga days, based on the "Les Tuniques Bleus" comic. The PC version was rather shit though.
Imperialism A TBS about "the fine art of conquering the world" that takes place in the 19th century. Develop your economy and influence minors. The successor Imp2 is more polished technically but about a duller era (the age of exploration).

No order, but in parts yes:
- Indy Jones & The Fate Of Atlantis
- The Secret Of Monkey Island
- Commander Keen
- Realms of Arcania : Startrail
- The Settlers (the very first game)
- Monkey Island 3 (bright & colourful, yeah !
)
- X-Wing
- TIE Fighter
- SW Battlefront I (simple but fun)
- PS:T (from an overall artistical & intellectual point of view : There's no game as much food for the intellect than this one)
This is just kind of a snapshot, with the 4 first games on this list *definitively* being my No. 1's .
Especially that Indy Jones game *drool*.

I wont spend time deciding which I like more out of games like Baldur's Gate II and Knights of the Old Republic. I will instead take my chance to mention a few favorites from my younger years:
Monkey Island
I do not know if I have ever encountered a game which made me laugh as much as Monkey Island.
Last Ninja
This is the only game I know that sucessfully mixed Beat Em Up with adventure gaming. I enjoyed all three of them but the second was my favorite.
Eye of the Beholder II
The first and the third was not as good as the second game, also known as Legend of Darkmoon. This was the first Dungeons & Dragons game I finished and perhaps the first roleplaying game with a consisting storyline and a memorable villian.
Wonderboy III: The Dragons Trap
I did not understand why I loved this game so much when I was young. It was later when I realized that this is actually a free-roaming platform RPG. A one of a kind. It's a game that I can still replay from time to time just for fun.
Golden Axe
I do not know how many hours I spent replaying this one over and over again with my friends. As a sidescrolling beat-em-up it's one of the best.
Turrican II
It might not be the actual gameplay which make me remember this one, but the music.

Quite a lot, but here's the 10 of my personal top games and not in any particular order:
CRPG - BG, Fallout, PS:T, Morrowind,
Non-CRPG - The Longest Journey, Silent Hill, Halo, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Thief, Deus Ex

Hmm… top 10 games… Let me think…
It may change in time, but it's like that now:
1. Baldur's Gate - my first cRPG. I started playing it when I was 9 years old, finished it so many times and I still love it.
2. Planescape Torment - best storyline I ever seen!
3. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer - second best storyline!
4. Fallout - great post-apocalyptic world and so great game! ( I haven't played FO2 yet)
5. Gothic - Best "living" world I have seen in game. Good storyline.
6. Gothic 2 - like Gothic, but crappy storyline (except the one in expansion).
7. Shogun Total War - best strategy game I ever played. Also has japanese atmosphere, that I love.
8. Medieval II Total War - also best strategy (well, all Total War series are my favorite strategy games), but in medieval Europe.
9. Red Orchestra Ostfront 41-45 - my favorite online shooter. I like it so much, because it's realistic.
10. Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal - great end to the great series

I guess the best way to pick them is by hours spent. Somewhat in order:
Wiz8 (no surprise there)
MM7
HoMM3
Civ2
X-Com
Pirates (I've bought this game 3 times, that must say something)
MM6
Majesty with expansion (gotta have the expansion for the random map generator)
X2
Dungeon Siege 2 (yeah, it's mindless button mashing, but I spent a lot of hours mashing away)

More or less in order in order of how much I enjoyed them at the time:
1) Ultima V (original, not Lazarus, as much as I loved it!) - first time I experienced a real story within a game (U3 and U4 were great, but they really just seemed to have a goal, not an immersive story).
2) Baldur's Gate 2 - Close to putting at number one
3) Ultima VII (both parts) - I only list it below the top two because it didn't dominate my life like Ultima V did, and I never replayed it the way I have BG2
4) Wing Commander II or IV - Not sure which one I would put on top, probably IV for the cinema scenes and graphics. I actually played III after IV because my PC couldn't handle III when it came out, but the DVD drive I bought came with IV afew years later.
5) Privateer 2 - I understand why they ended the WC franchise, it had run its course by the fifth installment, but Privateer seemed to really have hit its stride with this one
6) Civilization II - Between Civ II and III, I probably spent more time in these games than all other's combined. I probably spent more time playing them than going to school, eating or sleeping too.
7) Hero's Quest (AKA Quest for Glory) - loved the transition from the typical Sierra adventure game to an RPG element. The second installment was good too, didn't care for the rest though
8) The Blue Max - On the C64. Amazing flight game.
9) Indiana Jones and the last Crusade - Just a good fun time (never played the Atlantis one, probably should check it out)
10) Icewind Dale - After finishing BG and then finally getting my hands on Ultima IX, only to be massively disappointed, I was salivating for a good RPG. IWD stepped up to the plate.
Honorable mention: Space Quest II - comedy and adventure!
I figured I'd put some consol games on here, but nothing really stood out to me. I loved Zelda (the early ones), Super Mario Bros, Ice Climbers, etc., but just not my top-10.

If there were only going to be these ten games left after whatever apocalyptic event that might occur (which somehow left my pc in working order) I would manage to survive--well, gaming-wise anyway
:
MM6 & 7
Master of Orion2
HoMM3
Titan Quest
Arcanum
The Witcher
Disciples II:Rise of the Elves
Planescape:Torment
Wizardry 8
And to cheat and add an 11th:
The Great Empires Collection II(this is even a bigger cheat than it looks as there are about 4 or 5 different games in it, but added it mostly for Emperor, Zeus, and Cleopatra)
Sorry purpleblob--no Bioware games--they would all go in the next ten.

@magerette: No need to apologise. BG2 is the only bioware game I actually love anyway
I do miss some really old school games like Bubble Bobble, Lemmings etc. Sadly. they are not in top 10 because I didn't have computer of my own back then, so used to play it when I'm over friends/cousin's place

Hmmm… in no particular order except for No. 1:
1. Realms of the Haunting - my favorite game ever, an action adventure from 96
Thief (all three Thief games, Metal Age being my favorite)
MissionForce Cyberstorm - my favorite small-unit tactics game (just part 1)
Cybermage - another favorite action-adventure of mine
Lands of Lore (all three, Throne of Chaos being my favorite atm)
System Shock - and another hybrid here. Just part 1.
Wolfenstein and Doom series (including RtCW but not Doom 3) - well…
The Elder Scrolls series (including the adventures but excluding the portable games) - sandbox. That's what I love.
Final Fantasy - pick one.
Heretic and Hexen series (all parts, Hexen 1 being my favorite out of the bunch)
Strife - nice old hybrid game making use of the Hexen (Doom) engine
Gothic - nitty, gritty, fresh
SoulEdge/Calibur (all the games in the series, SC2 being my favorite) - my favorite fighting game
Kingdom Hearts - and another hybrid. I like both parts.
Super Turrican - my favorite platformer (the SNES version)
Zork Nemesis and Zork Grand Inquisitor - the finest graphical Zork adventures. And really great adventures, anyway.
Day of Defeat and Red Orchestra - because I have a thing for entertaining WWII multiplayer shooters
Team Fortress (original, non-classic) and TF2 - because they are both brilliantly entertaining and funny.
So… these are more than ten. But, hey… the list might look different tomorrow.

The Great Empires Collection II has Zeus, Poseidon, Caeser III, Pharoah, Cleopatra and Emperor. It says 2002 on the box, and was published by Sierra.

Tropico was a fun little city builder. The demo was a significant portion of the game (~80% of features functional), so I never ended up buying the game. One of the biggest selling points for many folks was the calypso soundtrack, which even in the demo was an exquisite mood-setter. There was an expansion (Buccaneer Cove?) and a Tropico 2, but I didn't follow either of those so I can't speak to them.

Top 10 games of all time… that's a tough one… trying to think about 30 years of games…
I'm going to keep this one to computer games only… no early console or arcade games… and as I always qualify these types of lists… this will probably change for me tomorrow
In no particular order (and with appropriate Moby Games links):
1. Doom - This is the first game that actually caused me to call off sick at work. One Sunday I started playing early in the morning and I didn't stop until about 6am the next Monday morning. I called off sick and went to bed. I had a tough time falling to sleep because every time I closed my eyes I could see the imps in my head… it was like staring at a picture for a long time and then closing your eyes… same effect.
2. Pool of Radiance (original) - The first time I was able to play my favorite PnP game on a computer. Playing in 1988, the game made the world of D&D come to life… I was there… I could see the orcs and the kobolds for the first time, instead of just imagining them in my head (even though at the time I was actually still using my imagination quite a bit due to the limits of the technology… and I think that's what made it such a memorable experience).
3. Dragon Strike - The FIRST dragon flight simulator (though another game would claim that much later). I loved that game… simple and yet so engulfing. Lots of fun.
4. Gods - A platform fantasy "shooter" on the Amiga (I think there was a dos version as well). I spent hour after hour playing this game… it was a blast.
5. Populous - Another game that I played on the Amiga. One of the first games you could play against a friend via modem or null-modem. I spent hours playing against a good friend every night after work. The gameplay was simple, elegant, and beautiful for its time.
6. Baldur's Gate - This game brought me back to the Forgotten Realms about 10 years after the (gold box) Pool of Radiance (I know there were plenty of FR based games between PoR and BG… but it felt like the beginning of a new generation). I ate that game up.
7. Fallout - I don't think I have to say much here. I was captivated by this game from the beginning to the end.
8. Wizardry 8 - In my opinion, truly one of the best CRPGs ever. When I played the demo I was bored… when I got the game and played beyond a couple of hours I found a game that allowed for extensive strategic combat and character customization… and I liked how it tied up most of the loose ends from the earlier games.
9. The Magic Candle - I just loved that game. It had a lot of nice little touches and an end game that didn't involve killing the bad guy (gasp)… you did have to deal with him… but not with swords.
10. Starflight - Man I loved this game too… a great space exploration/kinda rpg game that you could play forever… and I did.
That's it… that's as good as I can do…
I'm going to keep this one to computer games only… no early console or arcade games… and as I always qualify these types of lists… this will probably change for me tomorrow

You can probably even still order the music CD :

I never liked the Tropico 2 game : Too dark for my taste. You manage a pirate island there, and must oppress the prisoners meanwhile keeping the pirates in a good mood.
There also was a music CD for this game :

By the way : Simon The Sorcerer 1 & Kyrandia 2 are also very, very nice.
