Dungeon Lords CE question…
July 12th, 2008, 08:32
A friend of mine recently gave me a copy of Dungeon Lords CE, it's the jewel case version and didn't include a manual.
When creating a character- do race\class make any real impact? It seems like any build can learn any skill, is this correct?
Also, how does the "Identify" skill work? I realize I can try to identify an item when I right click on it, but what skill\statistic is that connected with?

Crap … I posted but it gave me an error and I had hoped it worked …
Identify is linked to the Identify Skill and Intelligence, but is wonky like so many things. If you do succeed it ID's every identical item, but if you sell them all and find another you have to ID all over again. I tended just to use the shops for that.

The bonuses and penalties become more pronounced the higher you raise your stats. It's theoretically possible for any race to raise any stat as high as they want, but in practice combinations like a strong Elf or smart Urgoth are prohibitively expensive. It can be done, but you'd have to play for days just to get enough experience to buy one more stat point.

As for skills, some are limited to particular classes. GameBanshee has a good rundown of which classes get which skills, if you want to learn more about that. Each class also has learning bonuses on a particular set of skills. Improving a skill you don't have a learning bonus for becomes prohibitively expensive at high levels.

@txa1265 - Did you mean the "Inspect" skill? I don't see an "Identify" skill anywhere.
@Arundor - Thanks for the heads up about GameBanshee, they do indeed have a great database for DL.

I just cheated to give my char very high identify/inspect and lockpicking (or whatever that one is called) skills as I found those parts of the game design particularly annoying.

I believe you only gain access to the Identify skill with certain classes. I think you can try to identify an item without the skill, but your chances are better when you have points in the skill.
One more thing: there's a cool off period if you fail. If you fail, your chance to identify drops to 0% for everything for a while. Then you have it back, without notification, of course. Not sure if having points in the skill affects the cooldown time or not.
And, yes, the GB site is an awesome resource.
Have fun!
