Exploration / non-violent games plz
July 29th, 2008, 08:01
My girl seems to be getting bored of LOTRO, but she's dying to still play something w/ an open environment to explore and all that. Last thing that i want to do is steer her toward another MMO, yet she isnt hardcore enough to do a game like Two Worlds or Gothic or something of that nature. She wants to run around and explore and craft and stuff, and not have to deal w/ tripping over enemies all over the place.
Anyone know of any kinda.. well…. peaceful or light combat exploration type games they can recommend?

Well, there is a game named cult which has no violence what-so-ever I am not sure if it is her cup of tea, but could be worth a try? as it is freeware, you can find it over at my website www.free-addicting-games.com , if memory serves you can find it in the adventure section. Note that the graphics of that game is not very good.

Pure exploration games tend to be a bit more hard core or 4X style… Are there any recent Elite type space flight simulations (I find exploration more fun when you are centered around one character/party/ship rather than have a strategic view of the map as in Colonization or Conquest of the new world) to be found?

Yes, we live in the Golden Age of Action Games, there are very, very few exploration games out there.
What's fun with exploration are the Cultures, because they have a Fog of War and the exploration is actually very rewarding - even up to whole new, unknown towns ! (Cultures 2 : http://www.cultures2.de/show.php?lang=en )
Divinity, although very combat-oriented, is an good exploration game, too. But it contains very much combat, so be warned !
For someone of this age, I would highly recommend this game series ( I know personally Cultures 2 most of them), and the Settlers series, perhaps the Settlers 6, or the Remakes of the Settlers 2.
The Cultures games have - at least in later installments - even the possibility of marriage and children which are born and grow up. They eventually become adults.

How about X2 or X3? That would give you the option for a largely non-violent approach. Still some of that level grind feel that should tie back to MMO's, but without any 1337 doodz to worry about.

Sorry. No pearls of wisdom in this oyster.

Think she would like Arcanum? It has a lot of combat I guess, but from what i remember i spent most of my time shopping for herbs and ballgowns and running around in the wilderness.

Endless Forest freaked me out too much, and it runs like crap. Dreamfall might work. I'll look into all suggested, thanks.
Unfortunately, it's the MMOs that seem to have the format she likes. Me and her might play Everquest II, although I'm VERY hesitant to greenlight that particular endeavor. Part of our relationship was built upon a couple geeks tired of the cyber realm doing what they can to get out and live, and enjoy life. The last thing that I want to do is plunge back into an MMO, she is finally kicking LOTRO. I wish that she could do the singleplayer RPG thing, but involved singleplayer games do not appeal to her, she's not a hardcore rpg player and doesnt like messing w/ stats n all that. ISO action-rpgs arent good either, she likes the 3d and wants to run around and explore in first person and craft and stuff, and not have to put too much thought into it all - like MMOs….. grr!

I still recommend Cultures 2, for there's also a demo out.
It's a bit like the settlers - and the fans of it say that the Cultures series is "the better settlers".

If you don't mind old hybrids I'd suggest the Quest for Glory series. The U6P has lots of exploration possibilities and you can avoid much of the combat. Download the M5 and give it a try. You just need Dungeon Siege.

You should check to see if someone's done an explorer mod for Morrowind that removes most of the monsters. Even if not, you could probably speed level a character for her in a couple of nights that would quickly take out most anything she ran across with a little of the game's super-mindless melee combat.
I think Morrowind's a fantastic, off-line explorer RPG, especially if she's any kind of a map geek like me…

What about this one:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure…and/index.html
It's not a RPG though - it's a slightly different adventure game where most (if not all) of the puzzles is based on crafting items from stuff you can collect from the island. Many of the puzzles have different solutions too. For example: you have to eat, but the food is raw - so you have to make a fire. To make that you'll need a way of creating a spark etc etc. The setting is that you play a girl who is stranded on a deserted island and have to survive - a true "Robinson Crusoe" story

hmm, Tales of the desert? If I am not mistaken. This was created without violence in mind. But still a brilliant game.
Opps A Tale in the Desert is the right name.
