Patent Lawsuit Could Set Off Chain Reaction

Yet another nuisance lawsuit.
Some outfit is suing Apple, Microsoft, and Google over a patent for… thumbnails.
I wish they'd have a law that said that if a lawsuit was declared a nuisance one, the plaintiff will have his toenails pulled out with pliers, one by one, very slowly. I think it'd cut down on this kind of nonsense.

This patent is not going to fly, but it's sad that a lot of money is going to be wasted over this.
Maybe patent applicants should be required by law to announce their application and proactivly notify any infringers as soon as the patent has started the review process? This won't prevent against stupid patents like this one, but will protect against stealth attacks.

I think the big question is, what things should be possible to patent, and what things should not be.
It is just like the russian guy trying to patent the smiley,,,,,,, I mean give me a break it is a smiling face, there are even things engraved in stone that looks like it, has been used to express things for 1000's of years!!
