Technical check list

just installed the full game, and when I start it up an ear-shattering screech rips from the speakers - then I have no sound at all. Just about blew my eardrums out!
Anyone else have this odd problem?

A lot of stuff in the early posts is outdated by now.
nVidia fixed a Risen problem in driver 196.21:
