Call of Cthulhu - How to Upgrade Occultism

by Silver, 12:44

GameWatcher shares some tips on how to upgrade Occultism in Call of Cthulhu.

The main way to upgrade Occultism in-game is to explore the environment and find certain Occult books or artifacts. As you find these items, you get another point in your Occultism skill. Call of Cthulhu is very much a game about exploring each area as closely as possible, so this should be second nature. You also can get Occultism points for certain dialogue choices in conversations.

Call of Cthulhu - Review Roundup #2

Here is another batch of reviews for Call of Cthulhu, ranging from a score of 8.5 down to a 4:

Call of Cthulhu - Review Roundup

by Silver, 06:12

Call of Cthulhu has been released on Steam to a mixed reception.

Gamespew

Call of Cthulhu doesn’t quite sell your character’s (inevitable) descent into madness, though the choices you’re offered at its conclusion are perfectly on point. You do, briefly, get to play as different characters throughout the game, though I would have welcomed the opportunity to spend more time in their shoes. Despite its somewhat shaky history (the game having changed hands midway through development), Call of Cthulhu has emerged from the shadows unscathed.

Trusted Reviews

Most of all, Call of Cthulhu comes closer than any previous adaptation – from Dark Corners all the way back to Shadow of the Comet and Prisoner of Ice – in replicating the substance of the Chaosium RPG. While it could be more sophisticated in its handling of research and detective work, Cyanide’s effort keeps both front and centre, always resisting the temptation to just say blow it and start the gunplay. There’s stuff going on here that’s far from perfect, but that could be fantastic with a bit more care and polish.

Is this the season’s must-have horror game? Nope, but there’s a lot here that fans of Lovecraft and Call of Cthulhu will appreciate. Sure, there’s still a sense that the truly great Lovecraft adaptation has yet to push back the door of dread R’lyeh and rise to the surface, but until it does – or a sequel brings improvements – this will more than do.

Cultured Vultures

Call of Cthulhu is a perfect example of a game that needed some more spit and polish before being released. Everything from the game’s visuals to its animation and even some of the world building feels like it came out of the early PS3/360 era rather than today. What it does have is tons of atmosphere and a genuinely Lovecraftian story that does a decent job of scratching that eldritch itch. It also earns a gold medal for resisting the urge of putting in tacky combat mechanics: the game has some limited combat, but it’s handled in a good and suitable way.

Call of Cthulhu - Gone Gold

by Myrthos, 16:47

Call of Cthulhu has gone gold and will be available on October 30th, 2018.

Call of Cthulhu, the official videogame adaptation of Chaosium's pen-and-paper RPG, has gone Gold, ready for its release on October 30th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Today, dive into the Preview to Madness Trailer for a taste of the press' first impressions, joined by a dose of Lovecraftian madness.

With Call of Cthulhu releasing in under two weeks, members of the press have already gotten their hands on the early hours of Detective Pierce's haunting investigation. Today's trailer explores praise for the game's distinctly Lovecraftian atmosphere, mesmerizing audio and visual design, as well as the RPG-investigation mechanics that allow players to discover clues, draw conclusions, question locals, and survive the island's cosmic horrors.

In Call of Cthulhu, nothing is as it seems. Terrible creatures, conspiracies and cults await on Darkwater Island, lining the path to the horrifying truth behind the island. Pierce's mind will suffer - solving the case will bring him to brink of insanity, to a place where death may appear the most favorable outcome. The player's senses will be challenged to the point of questioning whether everything and everyone is real or illusory. Creeping shadows hide lurking figures... and all the while, the Great Dreamer prepares for his awakening.

Call of Cthulhu releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on October 30. Digital and retail pre-orders are available on PC and consoles.

Call of Cthulhu - Previews

by Silver, 09:57

Some previews of Call of Cthulhu from Farflame!

God is a Geek

Sure, there are some issues. The RPG-lite character progression feels a bit out of place, and this preview build was riddled with spelling mistakes, but that may well be down to iffy translation of a French game and can easily be fixed before launch. It’s also a very minor complaint in a preview that otherwise had me riveted from start to finish.

On the other side, Call of Cthulhu is dripping with atmosphere and has a story that is as intriguing as it is eerie. The detective angle works nicely, letting you piece together possible crime scenes, showing you ghost-like images of your theories as you search for clues. Dialogue wheels and the various gameplay outcomes that are influenced by how you play, both combine to create something a little different to most of today’s horror games. Plus, the story had me gripped from the moment I saw the Hawkins’ painting in Edward Pierce’s office.

[...]

Game Watcher

For example, the first major objective in the game is to get into Warehouse 36, a place by the docks owned by the Hawkins family, where shady deals seem to be going on. The cops are steering you away from it, gangsters guard the front entrance, and the back entrance is seemingly blocked. What do you do?

The answer depends entirely on the stats you chose at the beginning of the game. While you may have upgraded them a little by now, it won’t be much, and if you’ve gone jack-of-all-trades you’ll struggle to do most. Basically, Pierce has seven Skills that he can upgrade: Eloquence (charisma), Spot Hidden (find objects), Strength, Investigation, Psychology, Occultism and Medicine. All can be upgraded so you can get more information, and even access different areas and conversations.

Call of Cthulhu - Developer Interview

by Silver, 08:54

The developers of Call of Cthulhu were interviewed by Gamingbolt.

...

Can you tell us a little bit more about how the game’s Sanity System works?

We have a gauge [meter] so you know how much sanity you’re losing. Every encounter, every piece of dark knowledge, you will [either] understand, or read [or not], will make you lose a given amount of sanity. That’s scripted in the game. The small part of sanity you can keep in the end, are based on your choices. But it will only be a small part.

You’ve confirmed in the past that Call of Cluthulu will mostly be a game that focuses on stealth instead of combat. Can you tell us about how that will be structured? What kinds of situations will demand stealth, and what kind will demand combat?

It’s mostly about surviving/repelling and escaping. You will have to get behind things, hide, and go slowly. It’s a game about trying to uncover the truth, Furthermore, it’s all about uncovering strange things for your character.

What drove the studio to work on these licenses?

First of all we were huge fan of the license. We’ve been playing the pen and paper RPG since we were teenagers. And then Focus came to us and asked us to work on the license. It was the perfect match.

Call of Cthulhu - October 30th Release Date

by Silver, 08:33

Call of Cthulhu will release October 30th on Steam and is now available for pre-order at 10% off.

About This Game

Call of Cthulhu, the official videogame inspired by Chaosium's classic pen and paper RPG, brings you deep into a world of creeping madness and shrouded Old Gods within Lovecraft's iconic universe.

1924. Private Investigator Pierce is sent to look into the tragic death of the Hawkins family on the isolated Darkwater Island. Soon enough, Pierce is pulled into a terrifying world of conspiracies, cultists, and cosmic horrors.

Nothing is as it seems. Sanity is an irregular bedfellow, all too often replaced by whisperings in the dark. Strange creatures, weird science, and sinister cults dominate the Cthulhu Mythos, intent on realizing their mad schemes to bring about the end of everything.

Your mind will suffer - between sanity and psychosis, your senses will be disrupted until you question the reality of everything around you. Trust no one. Slinking shadows hide lurking figures… and all the while, the Great Dreamer prepares for his awakening.

Call of Cthulhu - A Linear Story

by Silver, 10:43

@Gamingbolt Call of Cthulhu is a linear story with multiple paths and won't feature semi-open world elements.

The upcoming Cyanide-developed horror title, Call of Cthulhu, is looking like an interesting proposition, taking the concepts of the classic tabletop RPG and combining it with psychological horror elements in a single experience. Apparently, the game will be a very focused, narrative-driven experience, and won’t feature any semi open world elements (like what we saw in, say, The Evil Within 2).

Call of Cthulhu - Main Path Will Take 12-15 Hours

by Hiddenx, 21:40

@Wccftech Call of Cthulhu's main path will take 12-15 hours.

Cyanide’s Romain Wiart, Lead Level Designer on Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game, was interviewed in the latest Official PlayStation Magazine UK (March 2018, issue 146). He described the in-game sanity mechanic and how it feeds into the game’s length while adding that the main path should take between twelve and fifteen hours to complete.

"It’s very simple. As in the novel or in the pen-and-paper RPG, your sanity will go down, so this will be the case in the game. So, the only control you have over it is a little gap of ‘sanity’. The better you manage it by making the right choices, the higher your sanity will be, you will remain in control of your will at the end of the game, so it will mainly affect the ending, whether you will have some choices or not and whether you will experience things or not. That’s how it works. At the end of the game you have several endings, but if your insanity grows you have less endings, less options because your character can’t make rational choices.

RPGWatch @ Gamescom - Call of Cthulhu

by Myrthos, 00:23

There aren't that many Cthulhu games and especially not RPGs, so I was somehwat excited to learn more about Call of Cthulhu while I was at Gamescom.

Call of Cthulhu is an RPG-Investigation game, packed with psychological horror and stealth mechanics. You play as Edward Pierce, a former war veteran and private investigator with the game taking place in Boston, 1920. You are taken to Darkwater Island, a grim and disturbing place, to investigate the death of Sarah Hawkins, who has moved with her family to this island. According to the developers the game plays tribute to H.P. Lovecraft's work and universe.

What was shown to us was the early stage of the investigation when you just arrived on the island and all we have to go on is a painting, the only clue you have to find out what happened on the island. You are taken to the island by boat and the captain of the boat is the first person you interact with. The game is completely voiced and plays in 1st person, which for a horror themed game is the best way to go. However in a conversation the view changes to a floating camera, so that you can see both yourself and the other person(s) talking. Not all options in a conversation might be available Some are still locked and you need to unlock them first by retrieving hints.

Call of Cthulhu - Preview @ AusGamers

by Hiddenx, 18:53

AusGamers checked out Call of Cthulhu:

Call of Cthulhu is a Call to (Classic) Horror Innovation

E3 2017 was full of great games and great surprises, but a sleeper-hit from the show might come in the form of a classic horror throwback in Cyanide Studios' Call of Cthulhu. Read on for our full thoughts...

[...]
Call of Cthulhu was a standout for me at this year’s E3. It’s not a particularly visually punchy game, but it doesn’t need to be. Most of the game takes place in the dark, allowing the developer to work with shadows for both effect and art. The voice-acting also leaves a bit to be desired, though I did only see roughly 20-minutes of gameplay, but this is both a true throwback to Lovecraftian lore, and a direct homage to the pen and paper classic of the same name. However, Cyanide has gone one better, creating what they’ve dubbed an “RPG-Investigation” title that marries exploration, investigation, deduction and relationships with psychological (and straight-up) horror pulled directly from the Lovecraft Universe.

Call of Cthulhu - An eerie RPG

by Hiddenx, 19:41

PC Gamer likes Call of Cthulhu:

Call of Cthulhu makes an eerie RPG of survival horror and detective work

Stay with me here: it’s a walking sim RPG with Ace-Attorney-lite detective sections and sanity-driven survival horror. And it’s cool? It’s cool.

The most interesting part of the live demonstration I saw of Call of Cthulhu wasn’t when the eyeless monster crawled out of a painting. It was the heart attack the main character nearly had hiding in the closet while he watched it happen. Had he stayed in any longer, it’d be game over.

He has a fear of small, enclosed spaces, but that won’t necessarily be the case for everyone. Like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Call of Cthulhu is a first-person survival horror game with a sanity system. See too many strange things, read too much impossible knowledge and you have a chance to get hit with a phobia, but exactly what that phobia is will vary.

So picture this: a Gone-Home-esque detective game with investigation scenes that play out like Ace-Attorney-lite, interspersed with puzzle and monster evasion sections. And as you flee in terror, you'll possibly be kneecapped by an assortment of random fears. Tight.

Call of Cthulhu - Preview

by Hiddenx, 20:31

Farflame spotted this informative preview of Call of Cthulhu on GodisaGeek:

Call of Cthulhu combines true detective spirit with quintessential Lovecraftian horror

The number you have dialled has not been recognised.

I’ve never read anything by H.P. Lovecraft. My knowledge of his work extends to knowing that Cthulhu is some massive squid geezer and that our boy Crafty was a bit of a racist in his work. Regardless, his writing has stood the test of time and continues to be read and referenced today. In fact, it’s even being used for inspiration in a video game.

Call of Cthulhu is a video game adaptation of the paper role-playing game of the same name, developed by Cyanide Studios. Set in the 1920s, it’s a first person horror-adventure RPG which puts you in the shoes of Private Investigator Pearce who has been tasked in discovering the truth behind a mysterious fire that ravaged through the Hawkins Mansion and killed three people.

I watched a demo which showed off the opening to the game and then a monster encounter which takes place further on in the adventure, which is aiming to be around 10 to 15 hours long. Although I completely hate horror in whichever form it takes (so much so that I jumped when a flock of birds frantically  took flight at the beginning of the demo) and have no connection to Lovecraft in the slightest, I was very impressed by Call of Cthulhu. There seems to be a lot of depth and interesting ideas going on.

Call of Cthulhu - New Screenshots

by Silver, 22:35

Focus Home Interactive has announced some new screenshots for their site on Call of Cthulhu.

The official video game adaptation of Chaosium's pen and paper RPG, Call of Cthulhu, today unveils new images showcasing the horrifying locals and locales of Darkwater Island. Step into the shoes of Edward Pierce as you investigate the tragic death of Sarah Hawkins, and push your sanity to the limit to uncover the disturbing truth in this RPG/Investigation game blending psychological horror and stealth mechanics.

You are Edward Pierce, a war veteran turned private detective, in the Boston of the 20s. You have been hired to investigate, on the isolated island of Darkwater, the unusual and tragic death of Sarah Hawkins and her family. Soon your investigation will lead you to the fringes of the paranormal, where reality and illusion begins to blend... or is this really the fruit of your imagination?

Driven by the idea that mankind is irrelevant in an uncaring universe filled with inconceivable horrors, Lovecraft's dark works have captured imaginations across the world for close to a century. Call of Cthulhu fully embraces these fundamentals, pitting you in a desperate struggle against powers that defy human comprehension. To uncover the disturbing truth of Darkwater Island, you will venture a deadly path to the very brink of insanity - a concept tightly tied to the Cthulhu Mythos. As your investigation leads you closer to the sphere of influence of the Great Dreamer, you will start to doubt everything you see. You will have to find balance between your own sanity, and your determination in finding out what lurks in the shadows - as they say that madness is the only way that can bring you to the truth.

Between the haunting environments, twisted story, and the ever-looming threat of the Great Old Ones, Call of Cthulhu promises a darkly satisfying experience for Lovecraft fans and newcomers alike.

Call of Cthulhu - E3 Trailer

by Silver, 00:28

Cyanide Studios, the developers behind Call of Cthulhu, have released a trailer for E3.

loading...

Call of Cthulhu: insanity is the only path for truth

The E3 trailer for Call of Cthulhu, the official video game adaptation of Chaosium’s pen & paper RPG, rises from the depths. Developed for consoles and PC by Cyanide Studio in Paris, Call of Cthulhu will offer an RPG-Investigation title, packed with psychological horror and stealth mechanics. Cyanide Studios brings to life a disturbing world that players will have to explore and investigate while Cthulhu, the Great Dreamer, prepares its awakening. Today’s E3 Trailer offers but a glimpse at all that awaits you.

In Call of Cthulhu, players will control Edward Pierce, a former veteran and private investigator in 1920s Boston. Pierce will be investigating the tragic and mysterious death of Sarah Hawkins and her family in Darkwater Island. The game’s E3 Trailer showcases this disturbing Island and the eerie Hawkins Family Mansion, and gives a glimpse at how the intensity of the investigation will slowly start chipping away at your Sanity.

Insanity and the Cthulhu Mythos have long been entwined – as your investigation brings you closer to Cthulhu’s sphere of influence, madness will progressively engulf your senses, leaving you to increasingly question what is real and what is illusory. They say that madness is the only way that can bring you to the truth and you will have to balance your sanity against your determination to discover it!

The Cthulhu Mythos has grown to become one of the largest shared universes ever envisioned, giving birth to countless stories, novels, and even movies ever since the original publication of Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu.

Call of Cthulhu - First Screenshots

by Aubrielle, 16:58

The first screenshots of the upcoming Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game have been released.  Call of Cthulhu will be an investigation RPG with stealth elements set in the dark, gloomy, and terrifying universe of H.P. Lovecraft.

Cyanide Studio and Focus Home Interactive released two new images showing off the creepy docks and manor areas of Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game.

Built using Unreal Engine 4, Call of Cthulhu is an RPG-investigation game with psychological horror and stealth mechanics. The player is on a mission to find the truth behind a mysterious death of a praised artist and her family at Darkwater Island – sounds promising. Eventually the player will uncover more and more disturbing truths as the great Cthulhu himself awakens.

Darkwater Island is an undoubtedly suitable name for such a sinister looking place. Players will have to explore the area during their investigation while Cthulhu prepares its awakening.

Call of Cthulhu will release in 2017 on consoles and PC.
