Hellpoint - Reviews & Beginners Guide
Some reviews for Hellpoint and a beginners guide from Polygon to get you started.
If Hellpoint is to be remembered in the pantheon of Soulslikes, let it be for the exploration and secrets hidden throughout Irid Novo. The performance, regardless of platform, is a major sore spot for this ambitious action RPG and keeps it from being a much more recommendable experience. Nevertheless, Hellpoint is certainly up there in my favorite Soulslikes that didn't come directly from Miyazaki's teams and I can recommend it to anyone that's willing to put up with some jank for the sake of rewarding exploration.
Overall, Hellpoint is a beautiful game set in a horrific and unsettling world. It takes its own unique spin on the Souls-like genre by mixing science fiction and cosmic horror together. This aesthetic is reflected perfectly in its world and boss design.
However, your gameplay experience is easily affected by numerous unpolished features, ridiculously long loading screens, frame rate issues, and other annoying elements.
Hellpoint is absolutely a game to try out if you’re a fan of the Souls-like genre and especially Bloodborne. Its stunning aesthetic alone should grab your interest. However, the game unfortunately falls short of being truly amazing due to several unpolished elements.
The one thing that makes Hellpoint stand out is something that you don’t often see in the Soulslike genre: split screen co-op. With another profile, your friend can have their character jump into your match to help with those more difficult fights. If they fall in combat, you can revive them. However, it will cost you half your health. It can even kill you if you don’t have enough health, so it comes with its own risks. It might be weird to imagine a Souls game you can play with your mate on a couch, but it makes for a good date night if you wanna crack skulls with a loved one.
Hellpoint is a bit more than a loving homage to Dark Souls, offering up just enough small, unique changes to keep it from being a total clone.
If you want a new challenge, want to explore a mysterious new setting in a familiar gameplay style, and play some infuriating couch co-op (or socially distanced online gaming) with a friend, this is a solid pick-up in a suddenly crowded genre.

Hellpoint - Released
The action RPG Hellpoint has been released:
Hellpoint is a dark and challenging action RPG set in a heavily atmospheric sci-fi universe where the line between science and occultism is blurred.loading...
Once a pinnacle of human achievement, the Irid Novo space station has fallen. Its ruins are now overrun by cruel interdimensional entities acting as puppets of the malevolent Cosmic Gods.
You have been created by the Author, organically printed on Irid Novo and sent on a mission to find out the unholy series of events that led to the catastrophic incident known as the Merge.
- Irid Novo is a massive interconnected world full of mysteries, hidden passages and secrets within secrets - all for you to explore in any order you like. More dread and shivers awaits you as you travel deeper into the darkest corner of this forsaken colony.
- Dozens of melee and ranged weapons and armor pieces to suit your playstyle. Every weapon has unique special abilities that unlock the more you fight with them.
- A fascinating new sci fi universe reminiscent of classic sci-fi movies, set in the aftermath of a massive quantum cataclysm and complete with a deep lore and goosebump inducing soundtrack.
- The space station orbits in real time around an ominous black hole that triggers various dynamic events such as boss appearances, horde assaults as well as modified enemy stats and positions.
- If you are struggling, ask a friend to press Start to join in a couch coop session, or call for assistance online. The entire game can be completed uninterrupted in coop. The loot is shared, and the experience of local player two is saved and not watered down.

Hellpoint - Preview @Escapist Magazine
Hellpoint has been previewed by Escapist Magazine who call it Dark Souls meets Event Horizon.
You play as a humanoid creature known as a “spawn,” newly manufactured out of some sort of goo and ordered by an ominous voice to head to the observatory. The game has the celebrated “figure out the lore through exploring” shtick, and in a fun twist, it actually makes figuring out that lore your main goal. After reaching the observatory, you’re tasked with getting as much information as possible about what went wrong and reporting back to the disembodied voice so that the “experiment doesn’t go to waste.”

Hellpoint - Interview @Gamingbolt
Gamingbolt interviewed the developers of action RPG Hellpoint at length, where they revealed that there will be no Early Access release.
Will there be a demo or beta for it?
There is already a beta right now, we shared keys with our Kickstarter backers. So right now we have players just running around trying to break stuff, and we try to send them a new build every week so they can see the progression. And usually we change stuff based on their feedback very quickly, because I would say 99% of their time their feedback is correct.
Let me talk about that point. One of the things we we decided to not do and other developers are also moving away from is Early Access. There’s just too much anxiety in Early Access. We end up with games in Early Access for years, which is just weird. Another thing is also, for publishers, you only have one release for a game. Not two. So if you release your game in Early Access, that’s your release. And if it was unfinished or had problems, and you had critics and players commenting on its quality, that sticks.
So the concept of Early Access ends up hurting the developer more than helping. And there’s publishers right now who won’t touch a game if it has had Early Access. Because your game is already out, and if it wasn’t complete and finished and you got bad reviews? Well, too bad.
So one thing we decided was to stay away from Early Access, and instead give Kickstarter keys in a smaller more comfortable group. So instead of anyone being able to buy the game on Steam and leaving a bad comment, we end up with a nice community on Discord who can share feedback in a nice back and forth. Like there are some features in the game that the community came up with which are really awesome. Like you know how in Dark Souls you can leave messages? We have something like that, but you can’t use words, you have not use icons. And that ends up with players making up their own language. So that idea came out now a kind of brainstorm on the Discord, and a lot of people pitched in on the idea, and when you look at it with a big picture, it ends up being awesome.

Hellpoint - Interview @Gamingbolt
Hellpoint’s creative director Mathieu Boudreau and technical director Marc-André Jutras were interviewed by Gamingbolt.
What can you tell us about the combat system in the game?
Mathieu Boudreau: So much to tell… To resume it it’s a lot like dancing, each enemy have their rhythm and dance patterns and surprises, and you must chain attacks, dodges, blocks and interruptions to succeed. Everybody’s moves can be chained with an attack commitment and we’re introducing a jumping button, allowing the fight to flow in three dimensions. It’s a stamina-based combat system more inspired by Bloodborne than Dark Souls I would say, but it grows to become its own thing. It has small and huge melee weapons, some high-tech mechanicals and some weird and occult, and guns and catalysts for range combat. All of which can be modified at crafting stations and various abilities are unlocked the more you fight with them.
The game has drawn comparisons to the Dark Souls games. Will it be similarly difficult?
Mathieu Boudreau: We’re hoping it’s different. Of course, you must pay attention to your surrounding and respect the enemies and have a bit of persistence in front of challenges but the consequences of that design direction on the player is so cool. We’re certainly glad the “casual game” era is in the past and the mass market accepts hardcore games once again. At the same time, we’re getting old and time is precious, so we’d like Hellpoint to be welcoming to the players who’ve been crushed by the other souls-like games. There are a lot of ways to overcome a challenge.
You can make enemies harder or easier by performing ceremonies. Co-op player can die infinitely and run back to you. But also depending on the quantic system you might find enemies particularly aggressive or cowards under the influence of the black hole.

Hellpoint - Kickstarter Update
With 30 hours to go Hellpoint is close to get funded:
48 hours remaining and Meet the Devs
We had a great time with everybody while we talked about where Hellpoint came from and where it's going. We moved to Twitch because Kickstarter Live is a fairly new service that didn't allowed us to stream the game.
However, we discovered after the stream ended that Twitch did not recorded it. It was our first time doing a stream; lesson learned! We loved the experience and will definitely do other stream.
If you have any questions that wasn't answered in the stream or if you missed it, feel free to come chat with us on Discord.
The campaign is now in its final 48 hours, with about 90% of the goal reach! It's going to be very close!
There's 24 hours remaining to the Thunderclap. Hop in if you haven't already!

RPGWatch Feature - Hellpoint Interview
Farflame got in touch with Cradle Games to talk about their Dark Souls inspired RPG, Hellpoint, to discuss working in AAA development, working in indie development, their reasons for starting their own studio and the game.
Hellpoint is trying to get funded on Kickstarter, aiming for 50K Canadian dollars and is halfway that amount at the moment.
RPGWatch: What do you like or don't you like about contemporary RPGs? What are your favorite RPGs (aside from Dark Souls)?
Marc-André Jutras: In the Souls-like genre, mine is definitely Bloodborne. In the wide RPG genre, it is hard not to like Fallout 3 New Vegas or Skyrim. On the older RPGs, I believe the one I spent the most time on is Chrono Trigger.
I have a ritual when I play a new From Software game; I solo every boss alone, without summoning any help. A kind of me versus the game challenge. Makes the game longer, but then I can claim to have really beat it on my own.
Mat Boudreau: I don't like that most RPGs as they make more money tend to catch what I call the "Budweiser" syndrome, in that they start to taste more generic to become more mainstream. So, I get bored easily, I need a stronger brew.
My RPG will always be Earthbound. I was a kid and I created a table top game with Earthbound to play with friends. I must have scratched and sniffed the back of the strategy guide until it went blank (Shroom!! was just disgusting but I kept scratching, hehe), and the game actually taught me English! I think I'll start a new game again soon, I do that every 5 years or so. Okdesuka!

Hellpoint Preview: Sci-fi Souls With a Horror Twist
Hellpoint by Cradle Studios, is an interesting blend of Dark Souls, Bloodborne and the space horror atmosphere of Dead Space. While clearly taking the backbone of its gameplay from Souls, the environments, setting and mood are all clearly inspired by dark sci-fi experiences like Dead Space, Alien or something in that similar vein.
As you fight your way through the demo level, a space station orbiting a black hole, the gameplay has a familiar feel, but the atmospheric mood is less than comforting. Let’s take a deeper look at a promising Indie game that just hit Kickstarter a few days ago.loading...

Hellpoint - Soon on Kickstarter
Dread Central reports that the Scifi/Horror Action RPG Hellpoint will be on Kickstarter soon:
Hellpoint Mixes Sci-Fi, Horror, and RPG to Create a Unique and Visually Fascinating Title
The other day, Montreal video game company Cradle Games put up a post about a game called Hellpoint, a dark sci-fi action/RPG which clearly has a lot of horror elements/influence. At first glance, it looks like Dark Souls and Diablo had a ménage à trois with Dead Space. It uses a 3rd person perspective which follows the player’s character as they navigate through a space station, which happens to be orbiting a black hole, that is infested with demonic-looking beasts.
The game will feature parallel universes, weapons with multiple attack possibilities, a spell editor, and a system by which the position of the aforementioned black hole in relation to the space station will affect the inhabitants insanity. Oh, and did I mention that the game will have a splitscreen multiplayer option? If these features haven’t spurred your interest, I’m not sure what will!
Hellpoint is a dark sci fi action RPG set in the aftermath of a massive quantic cataclysm. You play as a mysterious ghoulish character whose intentions are entirely determined by your decisions. Everything is designed to give the game character and make its freshness renewable so that a creeping Stockholm syndrome begins to develop with the delphian space station on which the experience is taking place. With a deep, twisted, mind-breaking and multi-layered lore system to sink teeth in, the team at Cradle Games made a smaller but deeper game world that keeps entertained. Add in the dynamic Quantic System based on 21 hours’ orbit cycles, digging deeper into the mystery with each new game pluses and new game endings and you have there the vision for Cradle games: to forge a world that is truly spinning somewhere out there among the stars.
