Tom: Into The Breach shows that you can create tactical intrigue without force-feeding the player a 100-page manual. This game gives you an eight-by-eight grid, a few enemy types, and squads of cool mechs with different attacks and… that’s it. It even tells you exactly what’s going to happen next turn, and it’s still a fascinating tactics game that you can enjoy in snackable short sessions. It’s elegantly designed and accessible enough to appeal to people that might not think of themselves as strategy gamers. Battles feel like emergent puzzles rather than serious tests of martial skill, but it’s still quite hard, particularly when parts of the arena start flooding, or collapsing away completely.

Into The Breach - Time Travel Mysteries

RockPaperShotgun chat with Chris Avellone about the time travel mysteries in Into The Breach.

RPS: The biggie first. Does ITB have multiple timelines because a new timeline is created every time the mechs go back in time, or because a (presumably infinite) number of other timelines already exist and they are trying to save humanity in as many of them as possible? Or something else entirely?

Chris Avellone: The pilots have different theories. Isaac Jones’s belief (who’s the pre-imminent Breach researcher in the game – and I’ll paraphrase his answer so his neural lag s-s-stuttering isn’t p-p-present) is at some point in the “future” or “a future”, the first Breach caused an explosion of tachyons that went both forward and backward in time.

Isaac does not know when or why this breach occurred, but believes it was on purpose and was likely a laboratory test. He claims that if there weren’t multiple timelines before, that tachyon explosion (the “Big Breach Bang” as his colleagues would tease him about… but they’re all dead now) caused a fragmentation of timelines – into how many, he doesn’t know, nor would he be able to track the divergences since that would require knowing the details of the explosion, the tachyon output, and many other factors that are almost impossible to plot out.

Now the problem is, if this theory is true, every time a breach occurs, multiple timelines are created. If a timeline is lost, then other timelines are created… but if a timeline is saved and the pilots travel onwards, then that means the surviving pilots can go to other timelines, and if enough successes occur, eventually, all new timelines could be saved from the Vek based on law of averages.

Isaac believes (er, h-h-hopes) it is “unlikely” that localized breaches cause new timelines, but even he can’t be sure. He thinks it’s unwise to test the theory.

Into The Breach - RPG Codex Review

The RPG Codex has reviewed Into the Breach.

Each game follows the same path: you are offered four islands and a fifth Vek Bowser Castle that you must ultimately assault for a win. Each island carries a separate theme: temperate, desert, frozen, and Republicans winning fifty elections in a row. Once on the chosen island, you progress through sectors, each providing a small reward for fulfilling objectives. Throughout the campaign, you need to protect cities as they're the on-field pips representing your Power Grid – more or less the campaign’s “HP.” If the Power Grid goes down, you lose.

The mechs are piloted by unique though somewhat disappointingly undeveloped characters. Each pilot can level up, gaining crucial skills like adding HP, move speed, or super useful traits like ignoring crowd-control effects. Mechs can also be ‘leveled’ in a way, using reactors to boost their engine power so they can equip new gear or upgrade the ones they already have.

Into the Breach’s gameplay is simple: over the span of a few turns you manipulate enemies around an 8x8 grid to protect the Power Grid. Mechs start with one skill and almost all of them involve displacing enemies; conversely, most Vek are singular in their offensive. Like Heroes of Normandie, you’re also shown in what order events will sequence. It is sequencing which is the lynchpin of Into the Breach, as you’ll often be forcing Vek into killing one another. This allows for pleasing moments where you nudge and scoot critters just where you want them, hit end turn, and then watch the mini-Rube Goldberg unfold with fratricidal aplomb.

Any studio with a debut as strong as FTL might well be wary of that Difficult Second Album syndrome. How do you follow up a game so idiosyncratic and widely adored without risking disappointment? The answer, it turns out, is with a kaiju vs giant mech tactical masterclass.

We’ve been playing Into the Breach.

Adam: Cards on the table. Into the Breach is one of the best things I’ve played this year. It’s not out yet and we’re all having a big early look at an incomplete version, but it feels pretty much ready for release bar a few placeholder graphics and possible balance issues. The point is, this isn’t a preview build as such – it’s the full game, more or less, and I love it.

It’s a game of tiny, one-screen tactical maps, and short battles. A handful of turns. And I can’t stop playing it, over and over and over and over. We’re all loving it, right?

Brendan: I like the plot. You’re a bunch of time-travelling mech warriors who must defend the earth from gargantuan insects. It’s basically Edge of Tomorrow meets Pacific Rim.

Graham: It’s so smart, so good at creating tense little situations, at presenting you with every bit of information you need, at creating the sense that there’s always a way out of whatever terrible situation you’re in.

I feel like we should describe the mechanics. For starters: it’s turn-based, but not straightforwardly. At the beginning of each round of turns, you’re shown what the enemies are going to do on their turn. This giant beetle is going to charge this skyscraper; this [thing] is going to spew acid at this power plant; this giant squid is going to undulate strangely. You then have the opportunity to decide how you’re going to move, and when you hit End Turn, your actions happen first. It becomes, therefore, a game about interruptions. Shove that giant beetle to the side so his attack misses the skyscraper and hits his squidmate, position your mech to block that acid attack and save the power plant, etc.

Into the Breach might be small in scope, but it reimagines turn-based strategy in a big way.

Humanity was wiped out twice before I finally understood how to survive in Into the Breach. My Godzilla-sized mechs were overwhelmed by the insectoid Vek, helpless to stop as they butchered the last human cities. There is no game over in Into the Breach-not in the thematic sense. Instead, as the last vestiges of civilization were wiped out, a wormhole opened to send a single one of my pilots back to an alternate timeline to try again. And again. And again.

This cycle of trying, failing, learning, and trying again is one of the few things that binds Into the Breach to FTL, the indie smash hit and first game that Justin Ma and Matthew Davis made together. There are other threads that link the two games, but Into the Breach is not a spiritual successor in any real way. Instead, it's a clever subversion of turn-based strategy games like XCOM done at a scale that makes it feel like a Gameboy Advance game.

Into The Breach - Preview @RockPaperShotgun

Into The Breach is smart, tense and surprising according to RockPaperShotgun.

Within a couple of minutes of sitting down with Justin Ma and a build of his new game, Into the Breach [official site], preconceptions are torn to shreds. Ma is one half of the team behind FTL and when Into the Breach was announced, I wasn't alone in thinking it looked like tactical skirmisher Advance Wars, with added monsters. It is that game, to an extent, but its most notable feature isn't tied to the setting at all - it's that this is a tactical combat game in which the enemy is entirely predictable. Everything is explained below, but in short, this might be the smartest turn-based design I've seen since Invisible, Inc.

Before plunging into all of the complexities, here are the basics. At the beginning of every turn, the monsters make their plans, and every move they make is written on to the tiny one-screen map. No action has been taken though. The monsters make their plans first, but the player acts first, using the abilities of their mechs and pilots to counter the coming onslaught.

Many strategy games conceal information, forcing the player to work with an incomplete picture, and most use an element of randomness when the shit hits the fan and the bullets hit their target. Into the Breach ditches dice rolls and deception, relying instead on the abilities of units and terrain features to create emergent tactical situations that create chain reactions and unexpected, though predictable, outcomes.

Into The Breach - Why so long for the next game

@waypoint.vice they ask why Subset Games took so long to come out with another game after FTL and they elaborate on Into the Breach.

How the developer dealt with a "sophomore slump" after their first game's unexpected success.

Nobody expected FTL, a hardcore roguelike where players try (and usually fail) to guide a spaceship back to headquarters, to be such a massive success, especially not FTL developer Subset Games. It's been more than four years since FTL was released, but it was only two weeks ago that Subset Games got around to announcing their next game, the mech-and-monsters Into the Breach.

Subset Games has kept busy, though. FTL: Advanced Edition, released as a free update in April 2014, brought new mechanics and complexity to FTL, and the game was ported to iPad.

And while it might be hard to remember, the final months of FTL's development were funded by a Kickstarter campaign way back in February 2012, not long after Double Fine helped put the service on the map for video game fans. They asked for $10,000, but ended up with $200,542.

"Having a successful project has changed a number of things," said Subset Games co-founder and FTL designer Justin Ma, during a recent email interview. "Being able to self-fund means we can take our time and maintain better work-life balance compared to FTL's development. However, it brings new stress, too. We went through a period of a 'sophomoric slump' where we were a bit paralyzed figuring out what game to work on next."

Into the Breach, set in a world where kaiju-like creatures have emerged from the ground, looks like a delicious mix of Front Mission and Advance Wars.

To answer the most burning question about Into the Breach: Ma described the mechs as "somewhere between Mechwarrior's Mechs and Front Mission's Wanzers."

This wasn't the first game they settled on, though. Before their "sophomoric slump," Ma and his development partner, Matthew Davis, took a few months off; it'd been a busy few years. The two began prototyping ideas on their own, rather than immediately collaborating. They would show one another the projects, though, and eventually, one idea called out to both of them. Over the next few months, they poked, prodded, and stretched the prototype to make sure it fit.

"Whether or not fans of FTL will like our next game is big a concern," said Ma. "In the end, we're doing our best to ignore the success of FTL and focus on just trying to make a game that we would want to play."

Into the Breach was directly inspired by blockbuster movies where the good guys ostensibly save the world from one threat or another, while brazenly busting up the cities around them. (Last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice built off this reaction to Man of Steel, though it didn't really work.)

"No one seems to care or notice the destruction despite millions of people likely having been killed," said Ma. "We wanted to make a game where the defense of the city is the highest priority."
