White Gold - Review @ PC Gamer

by Dhruin, 21:58

PC Gamer follows up their Precursors review with a short review of White Gold. It fairs a little better at 59% but bugs apparently still go the better of them:

“Zombies? That’s ridiculous. It was giant cougars that killed him.” That’s my CIA handler. The one who’s supposed to be keeping a cool head in the midst of anarchy. The one I’m relying on to help me with my mission, to stop the flow of poisonous cocaine out of Colombia that’s killing rappers and starlets. The record company hired me, you see.

White Gold is about as close to an open-world RPG as it is to an FPS. You level up, have an inventory to manage, and upgrade your equipment with brightly coloured boxes. You have standings with each faction, which raise and lower depending on how many of their opposition you kill. In theory, that’s how it all works.

White Gold - 24 Hours @ RPS

by Dhruin, 21:18

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has some first impressions of White Gold, titled The Longest Day: 24 Hours in White Gold.

White Gold: War In Paradise, aka Xenus 2, aka Boiling Point 2 is the free-roaming FPS-RPG we’ve been meaning to take a closer look at for ages. A sequel to the famously mad, broken and ambitious Boiling Point (of which even the patch notes are comedy gold) from original Kiev-based developers Deep Shadows! What could be more exciting? What, indeed. An account of my first in-game day follows. It is a tale of daring-do, heavy drinking, a snake, a beautiful car and an enema.

White Gold - English Community Mod

by Dhruin, 22:39

Guenthar sends news that Wesp (from Vampire: Bloodlines fame) has completed Russian-to-English translation mods for both of Deep Shadows' newest games, White Gold and Precursors.

Word is that everything is translated except some cut-scenes and the text for those is included in the Readme files.

Both are hosted at The Patches Scrolls, with White Gold here (59Mb) and Precursors here and problem reporting on their forums.

White Gold - Console Version Canned

by Dhruin, 20:58

Mind you, the PC version doesn't seem to be heading to Western shores in a hurry.  CVG has an unsurprising quote from Russian publisher GFI, who say development of the X360 versions of both White Gold and Precursors has "stopped":

"Right now, we don't know what will happen with versions for Xbox 360. Development has been stopped for some time," the company said.

White Gold - Preview @ Games Radar

by Dhruin, 22:13

Games Radar takes a look at a "rough as hell" preview-code copy for White Gold:

Despite all these loose ends, there’s something innately promising about White Gold. Even though you’ll chuckle at the crooked animation and the lines of powdery, white ‘adrenaline’ you’ll loot from corpses, there are more ideas in here than most other open-world shooters. Our first actions in the game involved leaping off a pier having seen some interesting tropical fish, stabbing said fish with a Bowie knife, and being delighted that we could pick up the dead fish and see it in our inventory. The inventory description promises that we can cook it too.

by Dhruin, 00:21

WG elaboration is coming to the finish. Work over game engine is finished, all architecture is built, all quests are written and weapon is altered… There are only couple of months for beta testing (closed one). We want to announce different system requirements for the game.
Get to be ready;)

White Gold - Preview @ CVG

by Dhruin, 13:41

This preview of White Gold at CVG comes from PC Gamer UK, written by Kieron Gillen:

Our recent visit to Deep Shadows' Ukraine headquarters revealed one startling fact: Boiling Point was made by 13 people. Which is a little like everyone in the Gamer office, on a whim, deciding to have a crack at constructing their own Taj Mahal. White Gold is Deep Shadows' second shot at Boiling Point, except with the benefit of experience, a still-slim-but-more-reasonable 30-strong team and an express desire to not let it out into the world in a similar state. Co-founder Sergey Zabaryansky stresses that's a mistake they're going to avoid at all costs.

White Gold - Preview @ CVG

by Dhruin, 11:47

From PC Zone UK, CVG has a preview of Deep Shadows' White Gold that serves as a reasonable overview:

What sets White Gold apart though, is its grounding in roleplay. You may well be able to drive tanks and nip around on quad bikes, but this Caribbean jet setting will be complemented by an inventory system straight out of Deus Ex and a full set of roleplay perks and experience.

Whereas Boiling Point had a tendency to bury its stats, this time everything is simplified and upfront, with three upgrade slots for a myriad of different abilities - whether it's to do with chatting to the locals, skinning wildlife, better sniping or the sudden knowledge of how to throw a jar of jam into an enemy's face and watch him get covered by jungle-sized insects.

White Gold - Interview @ omgpcgames

by Dhruin, 23:21

Deep Shadows' Ika has spoken with a site named omgpcgames about White Gold.  Here's the question many people are thinking:

OMG Pc Games: I find it very adventurous to make another RPGFPS after Boiling Point was so heavily criticised by the gaming community, due to its bugs. Is there anything that prompted you to make the decision to carry on the RPGFPS series?

Ika: As you mentioned, the gaming community mostly criticised numerous bugs of Boiling Point, but the genre. The originality of such mix was values as interesting and challenging direction in the game industry.  Thus, Deep Shadows team decided to rehabilitate RPG\FPS genre for gaming community, taking into account previous experience. We consider that mix of RPG and FPS is attractive and promising genre for players. We’re aiming to keep in all attractive features, throw away stuff that irritated player and implement most of new features, that passed community feedback.

White Gold - Interview @ Payground.ru

by Dhruin, 23:14

Deep Shadows' official blog has a translated interview on White Gold from a site called Playground.ru:

PG: Why work on WG development process takes so much time? What is the reason of probable movement of release date?

DL:  There is no final decision about fixed release date at the moment. Development process of WG is going through the final stage. Main workflow is concentrated on balancing issues, polishing and other small fixes – part of work that need to be done in order to finish good project. We are doing all efforts to finish these tasks before May. Our main goal now is to produce qualitative scoring, that deals with really huge amount of dialogues and FX. It is possible that work on game scoring can extend development process and move release date a bit further.

PG: Is there any changes in game concept, plotline, technology in comparison with official information stated in before?

DL: The conception and plotline wasn’t changed, but there are many news concerning technological features – developers significantly improved water and underwater environment, implemented day-night cycle and weather changes into the game as well as set of ergonomic improvements of gameplay. At the moment we are tweaking skill level of enemies and learning NPCs to react on weather and day/night changes. We are trying to make gameworld more vivid and alive in general.

White Gold - Progress Report

by Dhruin, 21:16

Deep Shadows' official blog has an update on the development progress of White Gold:

Deep Shadows team is glad to make known a couple more steps to the desired finish of the White Gold: War in Paradise.

All missions and dialogues in the game are already finished.

Inventory of ingame traders was tuned to the most convinient and final variant, at last. We have already finalized all works and tweaks over our models and animations. Increased number of availible skins for NPCs, to support greater devirsity. Our gamedesigners managed to set up all available vehicles around the gameworld. By the way, if want to stole a car, you`ll need a jimmy to unlock it or use correspondent skill imroved to the high level. This will be the fastest way to get vehicle, as well as you can buy it in normal way. All our NPCs are acivated and ready to communicate with player.

The most significant step made in development process is system of weather change. I assure you, It looks remarkably.

Anyway we still have a lot of tasks to do. Like quests tweaking in brackets of our new weather system, daytime etc. For example stealth missions will be easer in dark time, storm will make traveling water areas a very hard task, etc. Moreover, our QA department working with test kit for Xbox 360 at the moment, to work out console part of the game.

White Gold - Preview @ CVG

by Dhruin, 00:21

CVG had the last White Gold preview we posted but now they have another courtesy of PC Zone.  Here's an excerpt:

Deep Shadows have claimed to be in possession of a map totalling somewhere in the region of 140sq km (wait, what?), some of it being underwater too, with the Ukrainian developers citing one particular mission asking you to swim down to a shipwreck (we're guessing to retrieve some drugs).

It could be good, because it could be what Boiling Point should have been, and Boiling Point should have been good. It's open-ended, in a Grand Theft Auto way rather than an Oblivion way, but it shares the kooky RPG aspects of its predecessor.

Thanks, Acleacius.

White Gold - Shark riding and giant mantis?

by Dhruin, 00:47

Deep Shadows is asking for community input into White War, asking if shark riding (just as it says - you can ride a shark) and giant mantis critters should be removed from their FPS/RPG to make it more "realistic" or not.  Head over to check the sample screens and vote "yes" to removing them. ;)

White Gold - Preview @ CVG

by Dhruin, 14:47

CVG has a quick look at Deep Shadows' FPG/RPG, White Gold:

It's quite similar to Boiling Point and dipping into the inventory shows that Deep Shadows are simply broadening the scope, including things such as addiction to the FPS staple of painkillers, as well as alcohol (which has the expected effect: overdose on the 70% proof and the character sways and stumbles around). They're also adding a reward system - perks - so on top of levelling up your gun aim and running speed, you'll get, for example, 25% at animal skinning.

For the time being, I haven't been told how it all affects the game or story: Boiling Point's freeform nature meant it was a game of sundry delights, and while White Gold has 60 main missions, there are an additional 250 to just grab on the go.

White Gold - Interview @ FiringSquad

by Dhruin, 01:53

Deep Shadows has been interviewed at FiringSquad about their followup to Boiling Point, White Gold: War in Paradise -

FiringSquad: What sort of missions will the player have to accomplish in White Gold?

Deep Shadows: Players will find a lot of different missions in the game. Whatever you like - from simple “delivery” quests to difficult forked tasks where you have to hack into computers, hunt for the drugs and antique contraband and so on. Do not forget that White Gold has a free gameplay, so there’s a myriad of varieties in quests and ways to accomplish them. You will have both non-linear and linear missions. Every player would be able to choose the gameplay style that is the most appealing. We understand that in a game where player is given a complete freedom of action, where everyone can choose their own way to reach a particular target, it is easy to become confused. Therefore we’ll add a lot of helpful NPCs, hidden diaries, notes and similar things that would provide guidance. But we never force the player to make a choice; we only suggest.

White Gold - Interview @ RPG Vault

by Dhruin, 22:44

RPG Vault has a conversation with a handful of Deep Shadows staff to discuss their followup to Boiling Point, White Gold: War in Paradise.  Here's the first question:

Jonric: How would you introduce White Gold: War in Paradise and the range of gameplay it will offer? What are the title's basic premise and key points of differentiation? When will it ship?

Deep Shadows:
First of all, White Gold is a true combination of RPG and action. Simply shooting everything around is not the goal of the game. We're trying to create a beautiful and interesting gameworld with a non-linear plot attached to it. The remarkable things in our game are a big but very detailed territory, Latin American environment, the ability of using every vehicle, the interactivity of all things around and, of course, numerous original endings. The player has a lot of possibilities, from collecting pearls and empty bottles to sell for money, and up to attacking military bases in a tank or chopper.

Another unusual feature is the beautiful archipelago of the Caribbean basin, packed with RPG-style quests and intense action, on both the sea and dry ground. The main theme of the game is the highly charged political atmosphere in Central America, and the things that can happen if it explodes in a continental scale war. But the main subplot has little to do with anything from today; it's roots date back to the pre-Colombian times.

We're considering our options to make a multiplayer mode. The worldwide release is planned for Q4 2007.

White Gold - Trailer

by Dhruin, 22:29

A new trailer for Deep Shadows' FPS/RPG White Gold: War in Paradise is available at Gamers Hell.  Here's the blurb:

This first clip of in-game footage reveals a sweeping view of the island’s topography, up close encounters with numerous characters as well as a demonstration of forceful weaponry including an automatic rifle and a grenade launcher. The main hero will be seen driving a tank to cover an infantry assault, haggling with a street trader for a bundle of bananas, attacking enemy airfield from a high-tech chopper and exploring the jungles on foot in search of a mystical Indian artifact. On display are some of the game’s most unusual situations including riding sharks and taking over a mafia gunboat with a knife in stealth mode.

White Gold - War in Paradise - Interview @ Gameguru Mania

by Dhruin, 20:55

Deep Shadows' Sergey Zabaryansky has been interviewed at GameGuru Mania about their followup to Boiling Point titled White Gold: War in Paradise.  Here's a snip:

GGMania:Were you pleased with the reactions that Boiling Point received? Why the game (especially the initial release) has so many errors? What's happened?

Sergey Zabaryanskiy: There were ups and downs. When we started developing Boiling Point nobody believed that Freeplay shooter with RPG elements in the real setting can be done. But we proved that such kind of the game can attract attention of many players and, as a result, a lot of gamers have become our fans. Now we have a conception, so, our main goal is to do the game with medium requirements and without drawbacks of Boiling Point.
