RPGWatch - Summer 2021 Key Giveaway

by Myrthos

Back again with our summer key giveaway, with contributions from our members. If for whatever reason, you are living on the Southern Hemisphere, just menatally replace the word summer with winter.

We have received 51 keys and we invite you to leave a comment to show that you are interested in winning one of the keys. In that comment you can also limit your opportunity to win a key, by stating what keys you want to be eligible for to win, or what keys you don't want to win. You limit your opportunity to win because we might be unable to match a key to your preferences. If you are more flexible, you might even win 2 keys. Who knows. We will try to take your preference into account for the first key, but this will become much more difficult for the second key (if you would win a second key that is). Don't bother in supplying an order of preference in that list as it will be ignored completely, simply because it is too much work.

Here are the rules of the giveaway:

  • You are registered at RPGWatch before the 10th of June 2021

AND

  • You clearly state in a reply to this news topic that you want to participate.
As mentioned, in your reply you can indicate what your preference of games to win is, which might also reduce your chance to win a key. The order of your preferences is not used at all.

AND

  • You have contributed to RPGWatch in one or more of the following ways:
    • You donated one or more keys to this giveaway
      OR
    • You have made at least 5 posts in the last 12 months
      OR
    • You have a minimum of 10 posts total
      OR
    • You donated to RPGWatch in some other way in the last 12 months (I'm sure you'll let us know how, if it isn't clear to us)

For all those who did register before the 10th of June 2021, but do not meet the contribution criteria, do let us know why you consider yourself to be eligible to participate. Either that or I use the following formula for the post count:

The amount of days I feel it is too bloody hot to actually work from home, added with the amount of ice creams I can't resist eating (note that the amount of ice creams I did resit eating, but ended up eating anyway are not taken into account), divided by the number of bugs I find in the RPGWatch source code (in the unlikely event the amount of bugs is zero, I probably did not look good enough and just use a number that looks to be OK).

Disclaimer: I'm sure this algortihm is clear enough and does not require any further debate. if despite that I still end up with an unexplainable number, I'l just grab one of the dices from the 'bag-of-dices' and role a number.

The possibility to participate in this giveaway ends after Tuesday the 22nd of June 2021, in a time zone I am happy with. In case I forget to close the giveaway at that point in time, it is whenever I remember to do so.

Check out the first reply to this news topic, for the total list of keys.

Baldur's Gate 3 - Adam Smith Interview @CGMagonline

by Silver, 12:10

Adam Smith, senior writer for Baldur's Gate 3, was interviewed by CGMagonline.

CGMagazine: I wanted to just touch on this into lore and the canon of Dungeons & Dragons up to this point. How much flexibility did you have as a writer for this installment of the series?

Adam Smith: There was a module that worked as a precursor to where we are, even if it’s not a prequel story. We spoke to Wizard of the Coast, while they were working on that we made sure that things matched up. It is very collaborative in that sense, but in terms of the lore we would come up with concepts only to find out it already does exist. Because it has been decades with so many writers and so many designers, if you can think it, Dungeons & Dragons most likely has it in some way.

It’s already been thought of so what we tried to do is say, let’s find these really cool weird, interesting parts of the Forgotten Realms and outside them sometimes. What we tend to do is we find the really cool, weird stuff, then we just see how far we can push it and how it overlaps with the other stuff we want to do. Obviously, we’re going to end up in Baldur’s Gate and when you get there, a lot of different things are going to be converging on you, including a lot of different concepts and themes. It is exciting to see that happen.

[...]

CGMagazine: How did you balance fresh material while still keeping true to past instalments?

Adam Smith: Baldur’s Gate 3 needed to not feel like it’s just a throwback or a nostalgia trip. It has to feel new, because that’s part of what Baldur’s Gate always was. It was the thing that was pushing things forward. We want to be there as well. Narrative wise, canonically, we are set 100 years later, so that means that we’re not going backwards. But the stuff that happened in Baldur’s Gate, the Bhaalspawn Saga, is not the kind of stuff that gets forgotten. So, it is part of our world. And we have characters who remember it. We have characters who have strong memories of it. 100 years is a long time if you are human, but it is not a long time if you are an elf. So, some people are still around who know what it was like to live through those events.

But it is that sense of both the history of the games, but also the history within the world of the events of the game, that is powerful. The story within the game, within the Forgotten Realms, has a legendary status so there was no way we could ignore it. You don’t need to know what happened 100 years ago to have your own story now. I don’t need to know the history of New York City to be able to be in New York City and experience it. Our objective was always to tell a new story that takes place in a world that recognizes the same world and all history that came before.

Non-RPG General News - Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - Aiko's Choice

by Hiddenx, 08:41

Porcozaur spotted some news about the popular stealth game Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun:

The game will get a standalone expansion called Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - Aiko's Choice later this year.

Here comes Lady Chiyo:

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - Aiko's Choice

Lady Chiyo – the cunning villain of Aiko's Choice revealed!

Introducing: Lady Chiyo, the notorious villain of the Shadow Tactics standalone expansion Aiko's Choice!
Konnichiwa everyone!

Today, we are very happy to reveal more juicy details about Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - Aiko's Choice!

As you might already know, Aiko's Choice is a brand-new standalone expansion to our beloved stealth tactics hit Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – set in Japan around the Edo period. It focuses on one of the main game's protagonists: the kunoichi adept Aiko.

Aside from the official logo and release date window, we haven't shared more details about Aiko's Choice, let alone the story. In the standalone expansion Aiko is confronted with her past life: A new enemy deeply connected to Aiko's background reappears from the shadows to challenge her and her deadly assassin friends ...

An enemy that is as infamous as she is dangerous: Meet the cunning spymaster Lady Chiyo!

Lady Chiyo: Elegance in all things

Yes, this elderly lady is the main antagonist of Aiko's Choice. But don't make the frivolous mistake of underestimating her. That's what many did before you – and they all paid with their lives.

She carries her age with elegance and her unfailing wisdom as well as cunning nature define her character more than anything else. Even the strongest wills crumble in her presence!

Naturally, her name has become entwined with many legends that people whisper to each other by the fire: "I heard that she once conquered a castle with a single word!" "Oh yeah? It is whispered that she once stopped an entire army with a cup of poisoned tea!"

Indeed, defeating your enemies from the shadows is something that Lady Chiyo turned into an art form. She is one of the first who established the teachings of the Kunoichi – the female Shinobi practitioners. In fact, she is Aiko's former master and taught her everything she knows! However, Aiko eventually left her old life and her former sensei behind her. But now Lady Chiyo has stepped out of the shadows once again. And she is coming for Aiko and her companions!

Why? That is something that you are to find out yourself in Aiko's Choice!
Wishlist Aiko's Choice now!

Aiko's Choice is set to release in late 2021 for PC. Wishlist Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - Aiko's Choice now and return to the beautiful world of Shadow Tactics set in Japan, early Edo period. Rejoin your favorite characters in this previously untold story centered around Aiko – and face her former sensei Lady Chiyo!

Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards - Review

by Hiddenx, 08:25

Gaming Nexus the action RPG checked out Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards:

Aluna: Sentinel of Shards

Our heroine is Aluna, a young woman whose conquistador father saves the Earth Goddess Pachamama. In return they have a daughter together, and now Aluna is being sent back to her roots to help aid her mother in a time of turmoil. Aluna finds herself running through jungles, caves filled with ghost pirates, seaside docks, and volcano temples to collect shards to bring power back to her mother Pachamama (who can’t be bothered to wear anything other than vines.) All the staples of the genre are represented; looting, leveling, piles of baddies to mow down with a magic spell. Aluna doesn’t bring anything distinctive, but it doesn’t do a disservice to the genre either.

The story is simple one; find the stolen and missing shards, heal the earth mother Pachamama, who also happens to be to your actual mother, and defeat the ultimate evil, that sort of mess. The story isn’t gripping, but the cutscenes are. Every now and then you get to watch a cutscene played out in the style of a comic. They look great, and it's a letdown that the developers didn’t include more of them, instead choosing to go with in game engine cutscenes.

[...]

Simply put, Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards is your typical action adventure RPG. Zones are fun and unique enough to satisfy. But the frame rate dips so low at times that it’s easy to become frustrated. There’s nothing eccentric here, and that’s ok. Not every game about saving the world has to be, I guess.

Non-RPG General News - Arkane is trying a radical new Approach

by Hiddenx, 16:10

Henriquejr spotted a PC Gamer arcticle about Arkane's new games:

With Redfall and Deathloop, Arkane is trying a radical new approach to immersive sim design

Following Prey and Dishonored 2’s underwhelming sales numbers, the studio is attempting something different.

Arkane Studios made its name as the mainstream advocate for immersive sims, the proud defender of a genre that seemed destined to fade into obscurity. The studio’s first game, Arx Fatalis, was Raphaël Colantonio’s attempt to make his own version of Ultima Underworld. Its more recent titles, Dishonored and Prey, were spiritual successors to Thief and System Shock, both lynchpin entries in the immersive sim canon.

loading...

Yet glance at Arkane’s upcoming games Deathloop and Redfall, and you’d be forgiven for thinking the studio has abandoned its raison d'être. Structurally, Deathloop has as much in common with a roguelike as it does Dishonored, placing emphasis on repetition and randomisation, including Dark Souls-style invasion-based multiplayer. Redfall, meanwhile, barely looks like an immersive sim at all. Arkane’s description of it as a "cooperative open world shooter" makes it sound like a blend of Left 4 Dead and Destiny.

Griftlands - Review @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 15:50

PC Gamer checked out the deck-building RPG Griftlands:

Griftlands review

Play your cards right and you'll enjoy a great story.

Games have always been looking for ways to make conversations as compelling as the combat. Why can't a tense negotiation feel as gripping as a tough-as-nails boss fight? That’s the question Griftlands seeks to answer. It makes for a compelling roguelike, thanks to great writing and characters, but doesn't quite live up to the promise of its chatty deck-building systems.

The titular Griftlands are a chaotic place where corrupt law enforcement and criminal syndicates run things against a backdrop of sci-fi and fantasy. Brutal it may be, but it sure is pretty. I love the scratchy, hand-drawn touch to everything. There's a smart economy to where the embellishments are made, which ensures the game can deliver on its scope without any rough edges. Character sprites have lovely gestures and expressions that compliment the writing, while the overworld map is simply littered with tidy icons.

[...]

Shortcomings aside, Griftlands is another slice of low-key brilliance from developers Klei. Is there a genre they can't do? The balance of narrative and deck-building made for a much more engaging experience than I often have with card-based titles, even if it feels like more could be done to connect those systems and bolster the storytelling. Still, I'm going to remember my adventures with Sal and the little moments of friendship and betrayal throughout each run. I like playing as a grifter; it ain't much but it's a living.

Score: 80/100 "Charm and good storytelling overcome limited, experimental deck-building."

Thanks Henriquejr!

Sacred Fire - Demo and Release Window

by Silver, 02:29

Sacred Fire currently has a demo available as part of Steam Next Fest and has announced its release window for Steam Early Access.

New Trailer, Demo At The Steam Next Fest, and Release Window!

Hello everyone!

We're excited to share a bunch of announcements with you. Starting with a brand new trailer! It shows you the enemy you fight: the merciless and seemingly endless Roman legions. Take a look below.

loading...

Steam Next Fest

Of course, we wouldn't just make a new trailer for nothing. Starting June 16th, you will be able to get your hands on the first public demo of Sacred Fire during the Steam Next Fest! The demo will let you play through the first chapter of the story with updated visuals and in-game choices, as well as voice acting. Doug Cockle, best known as Geralt in the Witcher franchise, is cast as the voice of your older brother. Joining him are Michelle Gonzo as your childhood friend, and Ben Britton as a local bully.

We can't wait for you all to get your hands on the demo. Make sure you join us on the official Sacred Fire Discord to discuss and compare your playthrough of the demo with the rest of the community when it goes live!

Note: the demo will only be available for the duration of Steam Next Fest (June 16th-22nd), so make sure you try it out in time!

Release Window

We're not done with the announcements just yet. We're proud to announce that Sacred Fire will be coming to Early Access in Fall 2021!

The choice to launch in Early Access comes after careful consideration. We understand this makes the wait for the finished experience longer, but the key factor outweighing everything else, is that we believe, involving the community and listening to your feedback, is the way to create the best possible game. It feels like a natural step for us to take, as Sacred Fire, since it’s first inception as a purely text-based experience, was developed with community playtesting and community feedback.

The Early Access version will contain full character creation and customization, and the first of three acts, introducing many of the companion characters, tough dilemmas and turn-based boss fights. The first act is a contained story with a rewarding ending and offers thousands of choices, two completely separate story branches and plenty of nuanced differences when playing as a male or a female protagonist.

We hope you're as excited as we are! Make sure you join us on Discord to discuss the news, or leave a comment down below.

Frontline talked to game director for Elden Ring, Miyazaki, in a two part interview. The first part is about G.R.R Martins involvement and the story while the second part focuses on the gameplay.

In contrast to the open field, Elden Ring also includes Dark Souls-style maps with verticality such as castles, which they call “legacies”. The jump greatly improves the freedom in exploring such maps, and Miyazaki thinks that Dark Souls series fans will find this very refreshing.

They discuss the battles next, with Miyazaki saying that the heavy, high-tension combat remains present. The game does however give the player more options in combat as well, such as the ability to counter directly from a shield block, and he hopes that players will enjoy the new strategic approach to combat, which gives them more options to employ.

The interviewer says that with so many new options, the boss battles must be tougher now, and Miyazaki acknowledges this, saying that bosses are a special experience, being climaxes in the gameplay. At the same time, however, they wanted to avoid having situations where tough bosses would stop progress entirely, and did their best to reduce the chances of this happening. As he said earlier on, Elden Ring is designed to give the player freedom of choice, and the player can choose to leave certain bosses for later, or in some cases even clear the game without defeating them. Additionally, they have made it easier than the Dark Souls series for the player to be able to have other players help them out in multiplayer.

Solasta - Review @ RPGFan

by Hiddenx, 18:37

RPGFan checked out Solasta: Crown of the Magister:

Solasta: Crown of the Magister

If the pandemic is making it difficult to get your regular D&D group together and you’re getting the itch to roll up a new character, you won’t be wanting for digital options. This may be the year of Dungeons & Dragons, at least in the virtual realm. Two similar D&D games were released in early access last year. Baldur’s Gate III, the highly anticipated sequel 20 years in the waiting, is the older, more famous sibling. The younger up-and-comer, which utilizes the SRD 5.1 Ruleset procured from Wizards of the Coast and comes from new developer Tactical Adventures, is Solasta: Crown of the Magister.

Pros
Freedom in combat, streamlined user interface, many options for building a party, gorgeous environments.

Cons
Story is too well trodden, writing lacks life, RNG frustrations.

Bottom Line
Solasta's combat and systems make for an excellent foundation, but until it gets a compelling story, it will feel a bit empty.

Wildermyth - Review @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 18:29

PC Gamer has reviewed the tactical RPG Wildermyth:

Wildermyth review

A legend-building RPG that deserves to define the next decade.

If you're interested in narrative, there's a theoretical game you've already dreamed about. It's an impossible fusion of deliberately crafted stories and pure systems-driven anecdotes, all lending themselves to stories of your own like procedurally generated bricks.

Wildermyth is that game. It is real. And it is wonderful. This tactical RPG imbues your every fantasy adventurer with life, turning dynamic character hooks and subplots into people you recognise and cherish. Funny and thoughtful and painfully mortal people.

Narrative design as genetic engineering, it will live in your head like an imaginary friend.

Astria Ascending - Releasing September 30th

by Silver, 21:41

DSOGaming reports that Astria Ascending will be releasing September 30th.

Artisan Studios unveiled that its upcoming turn-based JRPG, Astria Ascending, will release on September 30th. In order to celebrate this announcement, the team released a new character trailer that you can find below.

As well as introducing each of the eight playable heroes – from stoic team leader Ulan to the elderly but cunning thief Arpajo – the character trailer also shows off some of the turn-based battle mechanics, such as using focus points to upgrade certain skills and the ability to target an enemy’s weakness. The trailer also drops a hint about Astria Ascending’s unique job system. This job system will allow each hero to flex their individual skills.

Wildermyth - Review @ Explorminate

by Hiddenx, 15:47

Explorminate has reviewed Wildermyth:

Reviews Tactics Turn Based

Wildermyth, by Worldwaker Games, is a turn-based tactical RPG where the player controls a party of mythic heroes seeking to defend the procedurally generated Yondering Lands against one of many possible threats.

Wildermyth comes with nine campaigns, five pre-designed and four procedurally generated, though even the designed campaigns feature a large element of procedural content. Each one features a circular map with a number of zones, and has either an event or a battle against one of the game’s five factions, with the majority focused on whatever the main enemy of the campaign is. The map isn’t available in its entirety from the beginning, as the game is broken up into three or five chapters with each additional chapter revealing a larger part of the map to explore.

[...]

Conclusion

Wildermyth is something special. Every part of the game is well done, and while I wish there were more events, this lack of quantity does not prevent it from being a great game. If you like tactical turn-based RPGs and want to play something unique and interesting, you definitely owe it to yourself to explore Wildermyth. I expect there are going to be some people out there who dislike it for some reason or another, but even then it is worth playing simply to see what Worldwaker Games has pulled off.

Score: 9/10

Sacrifire - A jRPG Inspired Game on Kickstarter

by Myrthos, 08:12

From the creators of Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs and Warsaw comes SacriFire, an RPG that has been inspired by the classic jRPGs and it is currently on Kickstarter, looking to surpass its pledge goal with some ease.

Inspired by jRPGs of the 90s, SacriFire blends action and turn-based combat while traversing two worlds

Warsaw, Poland — June 13, 2021 — Pixelated Milk, developers of Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs and Warsaw have announced their next project, SacriFire. Inspired by jRPGs of the past, Sacrifire features a unique blend of real-time and turn-based combat, music by Motoi Sakuraba, and a combination of gorgeous 2D and 3D artwork.

As announced during the PC Gaming Show, SacriFire can be backed on Kickstarter today. SacriFire is planned to launch for PC (Steam, Epic Game Store, GOG) as well as Playstation (PS4, PS5), Xbox (XB1, XSX) and Switch consoles in 2022.

The team here at Pixelated Milk is incredibly excited to be announcing the Kickstarter launch for SacriFire, our upcoming JRPG-inspired title" said Bartosz Ɓojewski, Project Lead at Pixelated Milk. "Beautiful retro pixel art, a blend of real-time and turn-based combat, and music by Motoi Sakuraba are all going to come together in a game that is a love letter to games we loved. Players will encounter memorable characters, an underground city, a world of spirits, a war between gods and demons, and one soldier's ultimate test of faith, you know... everything a good JPRG needs!. We're seeking 82,000 euros on Kickstarter to help fund this ambitious project, but the sky is the limit!"

SacriFire tells the story of Ezekiel Ridan, a young soldier training to join an elite sect of holy warriors who keep the subterranean city of Antioch safe from demons roaming the surface above. The theft of a mysterious relic sets Ezekiel on an adventure which will lead to places he would never have imagined, where he'll uncover secrets which cause him to question everything he believes. A struggle thousands of years in the making is about to unfold.

Ezekiel and his companions battle through demons, cultists, and ancient automatons using shapeshifting weaponry and special attacks that uncover and target enemy weaknesses. Surviving battles requires more than hacking away—every enemy type is weak to different types of weapon damage which becomes more effective as attacks are chained together.

Key Features:

Dynamic battles – SacriFire's combat engine blends real-time and turn-based styles to provide a fluid experience that is both challenging and satisfying. Fight alongside companions, choose from multiple weapons, target individual enemy body parts, and string attacks together to create elaborate combos.

High-quality presentation – Employing a combination of pixel art and 3D graphics allows us to combine retro-style graphics with innovative digital effects wizardry. Hand-drawn and animated characters blend seamlessly with 3D-modeled environments.

Moral complexity – SacriFire's original story aims to both respect and subvert the standard RPG tropes, so although you'll feel right at home with our cast of lovable characters, you'll never know what to expect next!

A tale of two worlds – Travel between the sprawling subterranean city of Antioch and the idyllic spirit paradise of Erebus in a well-developed game universe which blends fantasy with science-fiction.

Elaborate gameplay systems – Adopt diverse combat disciplines, craft weapons, solve puzzles and tackle imaginative dungeons.

Original Music and professional voice acting – A brand new soundtrack composed by Game Audio Factory, and the legendary Motoi Sakuraba. The talented Sound Cadence Studios bring SacriFire's memorable cast to life!

Cyber Knights: Flashpoint - May Progress Report

by Silver, 05:15

The May progress report for Cyber Knights: Flashpoint talks about production milestones.

Knights,

We’re waving goodbye to May and welcoming June and so it is time for another monthly progress report. We’ve been in a ton of areas, including improvements in animation integration, level building and automation tooling to help our team develop content for the game faster.

May Progress

During May we made substantial progress testing our over-map story and dialog system which is used to inject story events and mission chatter directly into the game map. This required some new loading and asset management code, to ensure that both characters on the map and characters off the map (like your team’s Face and Contacts) were still able to appear correctly.

Another feature that saw significant improvement during May is the snap to cover movement mechanic. While Cyber Knights: Flashpoint is tileless, we’ve found in testing that a snap-to-cover mechanic is a necessary one to ensure player’s expectations are met in regards to taking cover and controlling sight lines. When combined with raycast based line of sight detection and feedback about targets, snap-to-cover gives us a best of both worlds hybrid with the benefits of tiles where players would use them, and with the freedom of tileless where players would want it.

Our animation team is completing an overhaul of the weapon’s targeting suite during May to allow characters to raise or lower their weapons up to 45 degrees when selecting high or low targets. Using reference frames and additive animation techniques, the engine can dynamically slide across the scale between straight out aiming to high or low or anywhere in between.

As our first set of playable levels comes together, we’re working hard to make sure they’re as beautiful as they are playable. We’ve just completed our first four ambient-only lighting setups which will act as the baseline lighting for different levels and thematic feelings established. Unity provides a rich set of tools for both lighting and color grading and we’re experimenting with different tools to apply LUT and color correction in both cut-scenes and gameplay.

Sea green, Day Blue, Dark Night and Radioactive Haze

May also included some heavy lifting on our shader implementation which is a critical pre-alpha task. Finalized physically based rendering (PBR) shaders that are both performant and beautiful and still support our feature requirements are necessary for all the Cyber Knights: Flashpoint platforms to live together. We’re experimenting with replacing our custom, hand-built shaders with more flexible ones created in Amplify Shader Editor which might give us more flexibility as we approach the wide variety of platforms and hardware in our target set.

Our team has grown substantially for Cyber Knights: Flashpoint, but the core machinery of the studio is still the two of us, Andrew and Cory. We don’t really plan to change that for Cyber Knights: Flashpoint, and so we continue to put a major focus on automation wherever possible. In May, one area that got some serious attention was the Level Builder’s light probe placement and alignment system. The levels and environments you’ve previously seen us demonstrate and show off to Executive Producers and Twitch streams have all used manually placed probes, which we’ve found takes a lot of time to create and maintain. Recognizing that we will need MANY levels for Cyber Knights: Flashpoint to live up to our ambition, we’ve created a new light probe automation layer that will save many hours and deliver a level of fidelity in probe placement that would be challenging to achieve consistently by hand.

Each dot in the screenshot is a light probe -- I think we want to automate this one :D

Conan Exiles - Isle of Siptah Review

by Silver, 05:07

CogConnected has reviewed Conan Exiles expansion Isle of Siptah.

Although it takes place on an entirely separate and substantial map, it does require the base Conan Exiles game and a bundle is available that includes both. Throughout its time in early access, the developers have taken note of the somewhat negative community reaction to the expansion’s content and mechanics and have continued to make adjustments leading up to Isle of Siptah’s full release, so this final version is a very different beast than in its early access premiere.

Perhaps even more important, the Isle of Siptah is so full of new content that it could almost be considered a sequel instead of an expansion. Comprised of several distinct biomes and on a land mass nearly as large as the base game’s Exiled Lands, the Isle of Siptah is packed with stuff to see and do. In addition to new low and high level building sets, there are new animals to hunt, kill and harvest plus over a dozen new vaults, a wealth of enemy camps to raid, thralls to enslave (and a new mechanic to capture them), new mounts and an extensive main quest that funnels the player towards the center of the Isle with a mysterious tower that unleashes a landscape-altering, monster-producing storm for several minutes at a time.
