Witchmarsh - Development Update

Our Eye spotted a Kickstarter update for Witchmarsh, an action RPG set in 1920s Massachusetts:

Hey everyone! Sorry for letting things get a little North Haverbrook there for a while. Things are taking longer than anticipated, but we’re starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. We’re busy working on a few developments which we hope will rekindle the Witchmarsh spirit, and we can’t wait to reveal them!

  • Luciana is creating items and item sets.
  • Jamie is working on enemies and ability animations.
  • Emelie and Lou are busying away on the script, as well as numerous readable books, magazines and documents you can find scattered around the town.
  • Joe is creating content, namely the desolate and haunted villages which surround the town (See animation)
  • Matt has released Wanderlust Adventures (check the link, it’s great!) and is moving towards putting more of his time into Witchmarsh.

That’s all we can tell you for now. Sorry for being so mysterious, but there will be more news coming soon!

Witchmarsh - Update @ Siliconera

Supernatural Detective RPG Witchmarsh Will Transport You To 1920s Massachusetts

Witchmarsh is an unusual RPG in many ways, but most of all is its setting: 1920s Massachusetts. The swamps and marshlands of the jazz-age are your stomping grounds in this supernatural mystery.

The basic concept of Witchmarsh is that you control a team of detectives who head out into the “darkest corners of rural America” to investigate the vanishing of 12 townsfolk and the mystery surrounding their disappearances. There are over 10 playable detectives, each of which have their own investigate techniques, abilities, combat styles, and personalities – they’ll clash regularly if you put incompatible ones together in your party, while others may fall in love.

You’re able to customize each of the template characters as they level up to specialize in certain areas. However, the game does have a character creation sandbox that offers over 50 unlockable abilities across five spellbooks. “Mix and match attributes, perks, items and weapons to create a unique team of adventurers,” the developers say.

What makes this character flexibility even better is that Witchmarsh will have online co-op for two to four people. It’s being published by Chucklefish too, the studio behind Starbound, so the online co-op side of the game is bound to be a big part of it.

The main play cycle of the game involves picking up clues by exploring environments, hunting down the locations that these clues lead you to, and then usually getting into a scrap. Combat is designed to be responsive and action-based, so you’ll be able to dodge and roll as you attack, and use a range off weapons including guns, bows and arrows, shovels, and magic. Enemies will often attack in hordes and have tricks up their sleeves to surprise you, and for the dedicated combatants there will be optional pathways with extra bosses to find.

The game release is planned for the end of 2015 or early 2016. You can follow the game development at this website.

Witchmarsh - The Cat's Pajamas

Inglenook has posted a short post-funding kickstarter update for Witchmarsh.

Time for a long overdue update, I believe! We've hit the ground running ahead of the money being cleared for landing - speaking of which, there have been very few hitches with Kickstater's payment collection; which is great news for the project. Many of you who experienced problems switched to PayPal instead, which is still going strong at £4500.

In addition to other work we've been doing, we're in the process of giving the character creation screen a fresh lick of paint.

It should look more like an application form now.

Time has been put aside for researching the decade, which is always rip-roaring stuff. Levels are forming, code is being written and optimised and the plot thickens. We can't wait to bring you more news as it develops.

Witchmarsh - Campaign Successfully Funded

Inglenook is proud to announce their kickstarter game Witchmarsh has been successfully funded. The game managed to earn £102,430 of the initial £50,000 goal.

If you find yourself wishing you'd purchased extra add-ons or rewards, have no fear! We'll be using BackerKit, which allows you to add items to your pledge, such as the soundtrack or bestiary.

What now?

If you're a backer, sit back and wait for your BackerKit to arrive. We'll be sending it out some time before Beta testing commences. Date: To be confirmed. PayPal backers will receive their BackerKit survey at the email address of their PayPal account.

On our end, we're settling into production and will post a few updates in the coming weeks to let you know how we're getting along. :)


In the coming months we'll be planning a Teespring campaign. If it's a success, you'll be able to get your hands on an exclusive Witchmarsh T-Shirt. 100% of the proceeds of this will go towards development and unlocking stretch goals. If you're interested, keep an eye on the updates!

Witchmarsh - Rewards & Tiers Update

Lots of questions are coming in regarding the various tiers and rewards. For clarity we've posted a breakdown of each available tier. We'd like to apologise for not including this at launch. There's still plenty of time to adjust your pledge before the campaign ends, though!

Update: We've bundled in an extra key with Bard and Time Bandit ranks to give you a bit more for your money. We believe these two ranks were previously a little unfair compared to the others.

Witchmarsh - Soundtrack Add-on & Bestiary

Inglenook has posted the second update for Witchmarsh with news about a new soundtrack add-on, the games Bestiary, and a new stretch goal.

£5 Soundtrack add-on, Bestiary, Alchemist stretch goal

Wow, Day 5 and we're on 67%, this is incredible!   

As many of you have mailed in requesting it, we're introducing a new add-on to the rewards. If you've pledged in tiers 1 or 2, just add £5 to your pledge and you can get your hands on the Original Soundtrack. This will be delivered digitally when the game's released, so get those jazz hands ready.

Changes to Bard Tier  

With the Bard tier you'll now get 1 additional game key (with beta access) to share with friends. Backers in this tier will also get a thanks in their own jazzy section in the end credits. :) Right, question time!

The Digital Bestiary

Backers in tier 4+ are set to receive an animated, digital bestiary. It will be available in .exe, .dmg and static as a PDF. Here's a little peek at how the undead page is looking.

Alchemist Stretch Goal

For the 90k stretch goal we'll be adding in the Alchemist character. By default she's built as a mage/support character, and can brew up rare consumables to help the team. Potions are actually pretty rare in Witchmarsh, so you might want to consider bringing her along if we make the goal.

Witchmarsh - Tier Updates & Bestiary

Inglenook posted the first kickstarter update for Witchmarsh with information on new Tier update, and give a preview of the games bestiary.

Wow, what a tremendous start! We're already 27% funded, and we couldn't have done it without your support and enthusiasm. Thank you!

In the next few days we'll be talking about some of the game's features, rewards and showing off some new content.

Speaking of rewards, we're changing it up a bit!

Changes to Tier 2+

All pledges in the Navigator tier and higher now come with a Bronze Beta Key, granting access to a secondary testing phase. Tests will occur some time after the Tier 5 testing phase and will allow us to ensure stability in the online multiplayer ahead of launch. These changes also have the added benefit of getting something playable to you all a bit sooner.

Tier 5+ Backers will still hold onto their Silver Beta Key, which will grant earlier access, as well as a wider range of content to try.

First Look: Bestiary

In the next update, we'll be giving you a look inside the Digital Bestiary, which is available as a reward in tiers 4 and upwards.

Witchmarsh - A New ARPG Set in The 1920's

Witchmarsh is a new ARPG being developed by a studio called Inglenook. They are asking for £50,000 on Kickstater to fund their game. Here is the usual pitch video.
