WoW: Mike Morhaime Interview @ Mercury News

by Dhruin, 2006-08-12 23:49:00
Blizzard chief Mike Morhaime has been interviewed at the Mercury News, mostly covering the success of WoW, although other topics get a brief mention. Here's an excerpt:
Q: Why did you beat everybody else?

A: I think there were several factors. Certainly the history of Warcraft games gave us a great following of people who had played the games. They were interested in seeing what we could do with the Warcraft universe. There were people around the world that had just played other Blizzard games and appreciated our attention to detail and commitment to quality. Also, one of our philosophies at Blizzard is we make our games as accessible as we can. You dona "!t have to have played MMORGs to figure out what it is youa "!re supposed to do. Traditionally, this has been a genre focused on the hardcore. Steep learning curve. Full interface to learn. Huge upfront time investment to figure out what youa "!re supposed to do. I think lowering a lot of those barriers made this game accessible to people who dona "!t normally play this type of game. And finally, we have been very successful in Asia. We have Korea, China. We have had great success with Starcraft, Diablo and Warcraft there. So when World of Warcraft came out, we werena "!t this unknown American company releasing this game. Blizzard Entertainment was a very well known brand.
