Fallout: New Vegas - Preview@ Digital Spy

There's a new preview for this game at Digital Spy. The usual excerpt, this time with commentary from Josh Sawyer himself:

 We moved the action to Vegas because we wanted a setting that was close to the West Coast, as that is a setting we have become familiar with in the previous games in the series. We also wanted something that was starkly different from Washington DC," he explained. "In the United States, a lot of people think of Washington as the cornerstone of our country, a city of American virtue. Whereas, Las Vegas is a city of American vice, that continually reinvents itself, destroys itself, rebuilds itself. Because it's a city of vice, we thought that contrast was good, and also the visuals are much different to set it apart."

During our hands-on session at gamescom, it was apparent that the development team has strived to create the yin to Fallout 3's yang. While its forbear began with the protagonist's birth, New Vegas opens with our main character being shot in the head and dumped in an unmarked grave. After being pulled from the ground by a robot named Victor, we were nursed back to health by the local physician Doc Mitchell. The good doctor then hit us with series of questions, which serves as the character customisation process.

Eschalon: Book I - Patch 1.06 Update Available Now

Basilisk Games have updated Eschalon, Book 1, to version 1.06. This patch is described as a 'maintenance release'. The update will be supporting newer systems as well as not supporting PowerPCMacs anymore.

For Mac users: 1.06 is an Intel-processor only build. See our previous update- we are no longer supporting PowerPC-based Macs. If you have a PowerPC Mac, we obviously recommend that you do not upgrade.

For Linux users: 1.06 is compiled with the latest libraries on Ubuntu 10.04. This might make the game incompatible with your system. Consider trying the demo before you request a new download link.

Links for the demo can be found in the downloads section of our website. If you need a new full version, please email us your purchase information (order number works best!) and we can activate a new download link for you.

We are sending these updates out to our distributors (Steam, Direct2Drive, Impulse, etc.) tonight. They will have their versions updated in a few days if you bought your copy through them.

Stardock - Layoffs? [Updated]

Shack is reporting layoffs at Stardock, though I hasten to point out staffing realignments aren't uncommon when a project ships:

Shacknews has received an anonymous tip claiming that several employees of Stardock, developers of the recently released Elemental: War of Magic were let go today in a round of layoffs.

Those let go included developers, designers, and salespeople working on Elemental. The tipster, supposedly one of those laid off, claims that the layoffs were due to Elemental's "disastrous launch". Though post-launch layoffs are common in this industry, it sounds like these cuts were due to the game's launch and reception.

[Update] And it's true, according to Brad Wardell himself:

It is true.

Elemental's revenue was anticipated to provide the revenue both for our main games team's next project as well as a second team. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen so we've had to start laying people off.

No one is being fired. None of these people did anything wrong. Stardock is a small company and each person here is truly amongst the best and brightest.  So you can imagine how much it sucks for all of us to lay off anyone. We haven't had to lay anyone off since our migration from the OS/2 market in 1998. It would be great if we can bring as many of these people back over time if the studio can afford it.

No one involved on the core components of Elemental is affected.

Elemental's rocky launch can be summed up (IMO) as follows: Our QA process was insufficient to handle a brand new platform (Elemental = Kumquat 1.0 versus say Galactic Civilizations II was using Pear which was the same engine, modified, from 1997's Entrepreneur) + my own catastrophic poor judgment in not objectively evaluating the core game play components.
