MMORPGDot Feature: Hero Online Interview

by Dhruin, 07:25
MGame released 'Hero Online' just last week and we caught up with them just before launch with a few questions to get an overview of this free-to-play entry:
MMORPGDot: How will this game compete with other games? Why will gamers who are committed to other MMORPGs want to give this a try? Is it just a different storyline with similar gameplay or can we see more varied features?

Jack Stanley: Hero Online is a unique and exciting change to the traditional MMORPG genre. The graphics , sounds and story all contribute to complete immersion in traditional Chinese martial arts culture. In order to make this game we have conducted extensive research and listened to what the players want. We offer complete character customization with both linear and non-linear play styles. Players can compose, customize their armor and weapons to suit their play style. We offer many other innovative ideas and rely on player feedback to keep the game fresh and new.

Hero Online: Launch Day Preview @ MMORPG.com

by Inauro, 22:50
Hero Online goes live and MMORPG.com is there to see what all the fuss is about.
Hero Online is a Korean Free to Play game that has been ported over for the US market. Typical of many of its lineage, the client is free and there are no monthly fees to play. Although what you pay for differs between games, each developera "!s business model is essentially the same a you pay for what you get. Additional inventory space, special weapons and suits of armor perhaps, additional classes or characters, additional mounts, skillsa ¦ the list is endlessa ¦ but we dona "!t know yet, what will be available.

A game like Hero Online can hardly be compared to paid models such as EverQuestII or World of WarCraft but must be compared to others of the same genre, or judged on its own merit. Gamers entering this game seeking a world, content and game play similar to EverQuestII or World of WarCraft will only have themselves to blame if they are disappointed.

Hero Online: Preview @ GameSpy

by Dhruin, 23:11
GameSpy is the next site to look at Hero Online:
There's a certain style of MMO that's quite popular in Korea and other Asian markets that faces great difficulty transferring to the West. MMOs like Lineage II and the upcoming Archlord are built around the idea of huge guilds working together to accomplish massive, massive goals. In Lineage II it's the control of one of six enormous castles that dot the land. The problem is that their very design necessitates players subsuming their desire for individual glory and achievement to support their guild. There's very little to do for the solo or small guild player in such games, and even the most dedicated guildie can be worn down by the incessant grind with little to personally show for it. This isn't something that goes over very well with people more accustomed to games built around individual achievement.

Hero Online: Hands-On Preview @ 1UP

by Inauro, 04:07
1UP spends some time with MGame's Hero Online and shares a few thoughts in a new preview.
Coming from Korean publisher Mgame, Hero Online is a free-to-play martial arts MMORPG. From our hands on with the beta, we're curious to see if it will develop into something worth sinking hours and hours into. Set after the unification of China, the players are martial artist heroes struggling to...well, to kill wolves. No one in game will tell you that, but the first thing you'll want to do after logging in is run outside of the starting city and kill a bunch of wolves, so that you can use one of your starting weapons.

Hero Online: First Look @ MMORPG.com

by Dhruin, 22:29
> at Hero Online:
A highly successful MMORPG in Asia, MGame USA brings it to the English speaking world. At first look, it feels and plays like a cross between Street Fighter and Diablo a lots of martial arts moves and click-to-move/fight/equip/drink unlimited potions. Hero Online looks pretty simplistic at first glance. You are given a choice of four characters, two male (Hunter and Warrior) and two female (Assassin and Physician). Each has a description which tells you the type of combat it is good for and the weapons you can use. You also choose a profession (or class) at level 10, and despite their descriptions, any character type can elect to be any class a Assassin, Hunter, Physician or Warrior.

So you wanna be a hero, eh? How about a kung-fu fighter who's as fast as lighting (thank you Carl Douglass for those funky fresh lyrics)? Well, now's your chance with Hero Online, the upcoming martial arts MMORPG from Korean game makers, Mgame. I spent last weekend cruising through a feudal, medieval China looking to become just that.

Hero Online: First Impressions @ Eurogamer

by Inauro, 02:27
Eurogamer shares some first impressions of MGame's Hero Online.
Set in ancient China, the premise is that the 12 demons of legend, that slaughtered ten-thousand-strong armies before the hero known as the Great Dragon banished them, might have returned. The Great Dragon has been murdered, apparently by his wife. A new hero is needed to drive the enemies of China back and confront the demons, should they exist. But where shall we find such a hero?

Oh! Ten thousand identical volunteers! Isn't that lucky?

Hero Online: Beta Q&A @ RPG Vault

by Inauro, 00:54
RPG Vault speaks with Lead Game Designer Jack Stanley about the close of the North American Hero Online beta.
Jonric: With the North American closed beta for Hero Online having recently ended, how do you feel it went overall? How long did it last, how many players took part, and what were your key objectives?

Jack Stanley: We feel that the closed betas for Hero Online went very well. We had lots of positive feedback from our players, and look forward to making certain changes in accordance with them. The two phases we had lasted five days each, with concurrent users exceeding our original expectations. To be honest, the numbers were so high on the first day, that our servers could barely handle them!

During our closed beta, our primary goal was to weed out any bugs that remained in the game and resolve them for the open stage. After our closed phases, we feel we have a good grasp on them, and look forward to the start of our open beta.

Hero Online Update

by Dhruin, 07:21
Here's the latest on Hero Online straight from MGame:
First of all, we thank our players for their participation in our Closed Betas.

We have received much feedback regarding Hero Online in the form of bug reports, suggestions, criticisms and praise.

We are always receptive to the input of our players, and look forward to hearing more from players during our Open Beta which will launch on June 30th, 2006 and will last for a month.

Players who have participated in Closed Betas will not need to make new accounts to participate since we will not wipe any account information, however characters that they have created will be erased.

Nonetheless, we value the efforts that Closed Beta participants have shown and would like to reward them with an item during our Open Beta.

The criteria for receiving our Special Closed Beta Item are as follows:

- A player must have participated in either the First or Second or both of Closed Betas.
- A player must have at least one character in their account that has reached past the 3rd Dan.
- Only one item will be rewarded per account.

Detailed information regarding this event will be announced more in the near future.

Once again, we truly appreciate players' effort and interest, and hope to see all in our Open Beta!

by Inauro, 03:11
Netgame and MGame share some further details of their forthcoming MMO Hero Online with the RPG Vault team.
Customization

While there are many aspects of Hero Online that are quite unique, some of its most overlooked yet distinctive aspects are its customization features. Upon first glance, it may seem like Hero Online is just another cookie-cutter MMORPG, but if players take a closer look, they will see that that is not the case.

Hero Online: Preview @ GameZone

by Dhruin, 00:46
GameZone has kicked up a preview of MGame's Hero Online:
Impressions after the first beta session are somewhat limited, as the game seems to be a work in progress and there is no telling just what the developers will be adding as the game moves toward release. There are only four characters available, at this stage a two male and two female. The males are a sword/bow and a heavy tank class, while the female are a melee and a healing class. Character customization is limited at best, but as players progress, they can begin to define their class. At level 10, or 1st Dan, players can choose from one of four classes - warrior, physician, assassin and hunter.

Hero Online: Interview @ GameZone

by Dhruin, 07:43
GzmeZone speaks to Hero Online lead designer, Jack Stanley:
Q: What classes are involved in the game? What races? Does the game follow the standard skill progression trees of most MMORPGs?

Jack: As opposed to races, in the beginning of the game, players will have a choice of four playable characters. These characters will each have their own individual stat and weapon proficiencies. Once reaching level 10, the player can then choose one of four classes (warrior, physician, hunter, assassin) that will have three tiers of classification. When it comes to the skills of the game, the progression will be based off of skill books and skill points. Skill books will be attained through NPCs and quests, while points will be gained through a separate skill-exp meter.

Hero Online: Interview @ RPG Vault

by Inauro, 02:52
MGames' Jack Stanley returns to answer another round of questions in part two of RPG Vault's Hero Online interview.
Jonric: Will Hero Online have many different weapons, armors and items in general? Will using them be restricted in any way? Will upgrading be possible, and how important will they be overall?

Jack Stanley: There are tons and tons and tons of items and variations in this game, and they will each have their own look and feel when equipped by the characters. As far as variations are concerned, there will definitely be upgrades, alterations, enchanting, disenchanting, and crafting for players to use to build their perfect weapon and armor. Items will have minimum requirements to equip based on three things: level, stats and sex.
