Hi all, I'll keep this as short as possible. I know there are many, many forum threads like this but I promise I've looked over as many as I could find.

My mother loves the Dragon Quest series.

Since she is older, she will not have any interest at all in a game unless it meets the following criteria:

- Turned-based combat (JRPG styled games are best)
- "Decent" graphics--I would say no worse than FFVII
- Casino/gambling mini games?? or if not, a really good story

She's already played the following:
DQ7
DQ8
DQ11
Eternal Sonata
Blue Dragon
Chrono Trigger
FFVII, FFVIII
Breath of Fire Series

The best I can come up with from everything I've seen would be the Trails series, but I tried to get her into Cold Steel but it just didn't take.

Any recommendations would be helpful as she won't stop begging me lol and I'm doing my best to find something!

I don't play many JRPGs, but I'd recommend Radiant Historia (only available on DS & 3DS). It's got a neat battle system and a time travel themed story. Made by some of the same people who worked on Chrono Trigger IIRC.

I just started playing Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. It's more of tactical RPG but doesn't seem especially complicated. Seems pretty good so far and has mostly positive reviews on Steam.

Do you think your mom be interested in trying some Western turn-based RPGs? This site is geared primarily towards computer RPGs so that's the type most of us tend to prefer. I could recommend some turn-based cRPGs with good stories… Unless not having Japanese style art is a dealbreaker.

Otherwise, you might want to peruse our JRPG subforum for some ideas.

Fell Seal is quite excellent, assuming you've enjoyed the style in games such as Final Fantasy: Tactics. If that style is to your liking, even if you pay full price you'll get nothing but satisfaction from Fell Seal, it's a stellar game. I've not purchased the additional content for it yet, so I can only speak to the base game, which I just completed playing a couple of months ago.

Well, Final Fantasy X is the obvious choice. You've got to suffer through a not-so-well-done teenage romance story in the middle third but, once you get past the "pond love" scene, the story gets really good. (It also makes for a perfect ending to the Final Fantasy series if you don't play X-2.)

Cold Steel's graphics are pretty weak. Was that what bothered her?

Valkyria Chronicles is a good series but it has a lot of tactics. The game sits between a JRPG and a 3D XCOM.

Resonance of Fate is a pretty different JRPG. It's turn based but there's action while the turn is playing out. I got bored about half way through but, if you get it for cheap, it's still worth the cash to see the interesting system they use.

Man, the Cold Steel games are so solid, I'm not sure exactly what would turn anyone off that series, assuming they actually enjoy the genre. The prior series is a bit rougher and not as intuitive, yet Cold Steel to me is a huge increase in basically everything good from the Trails series. Try them both maybe?
