Personally I did not enjoy Underrail.
The maps / world building is the best part of Underrail for me and like with Spiderweb games this is enough for me to play these games....across boring maps.

All is handcrafted and you can experience this in every single map. There is so much to explore, and especially with the odity XP system the exploration is very rewarding.
Plus Underrail has a very open world design - before reaching Core City you can already explore a ton of maps with very difficult encounters. And there are interesting connections between different parts of the world.
I did not play the expansion of Underrail and hope to find the time for a replay sometime...
Yeah, I was hopeful that I was part of the niche, but I am not.I haven't played it, wanted to multiple times, but what you say is exactly what I thought would put me off. Though from what I head I had the impression quests were better, but it doesn't even seem to be the case.
I know that people who like this game usually like it a lot. So maybe it's one of those special games that requires a special mindset to be appreciated? Mechajammer seems to be another example. As you said, it's for a niche audience.
Agreed. The very slow pace (in this case both literally and figuratively) makes progression a chore. Fast travel might have made it more bearable.I've tried it a few times, but gradually lost interest. Some fast travel options between maps might have made it more bearable.
I loved Fallout and Arcanum. Incredible games. For me it's all about the "world vs build" gameplay.
Like I did it before in Fallout or Arcanum, or more recently in Age of Decadence, I keep replaying it to test new builds (and there are so many possibilities !) and see how it goes (600h...).
And the turn-based combat is great, I don't get what would be wrong with it (worst for me is the one in Banner Saga, that one is incredibly stupid).
