I saw a docu on this in German TV some months ago, may be translated from Discovery Channel or BBC.

Must have been a feeling like being in a horror movie for the first people who came there after the event.

Fascinating(as Dr Spock would say.) It's hard to tell if anyone is actually doing much to degas the lake, but at least they know what it is now when hundreds of people get killed.
