The first reviews on Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream are rolling out and are looking very good. This JRPG releases tomorrow on PC, PS4 and Switch.

PC Invasion: 9

The in-depth alchemy and gathering mechanics are fantastic. Add to that the gorgeous character models, compelling story, and fun characters and there's really no reason to not play Sophie 2. Perhaps more importantly than any of that though is the small details that prove to me that Gust really cared about this game. Any game that has this level of care and time put into it is bound to be good.

Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is the best installment in the franchise yet. The vast innovations made to the alchemy gameplay loop make sure that the franchise's main selling point is the best it has ever been. Not only will Atelier fans love this, but just about any JRPG fan will have a great time playing it.
God is a Geek: 9.0

Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Dream is a fantastic entry in this light-hearted JRPG series. The loop of ingredient gathering and alchemy is endlessly compelling, and all the quests, progression systems and handy fast travel means it never feels like you're wasting your time. The combat might be a little bit too traditional for some, but it can't detract from this magical adventure in a dream dimension.

POSITIVES: The loop of gathering and alchemising is really compelling. Creating the perfect item is so rewarding. Very visually striking. Combat weather effects add a nice layer of complexity.

NEGATIVES: Turn based combat is a little slow. Sometimes knowing how to progress is an issue.

Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is yet another enjoyable game from Gust and Koei Tecmo. Even if you don't get fully invested in the story, the adventuring alone is enough to keep you playing. A great alchemy system accompanies a fun battle system, all set in a world that's a joy to explore - with a cast of characters that you'll undoubtedly enjoy spending time with. If you've enjoyed Atelier games in the past, then you'll love this one too.
RPG Fan: 90

With a fun and rewarding battle system, lush visuals, a touching story, charming and endearing characters, and grand world, Atelier Sophie 2 is a fantastic game that is easy to recommend. Fans of the series are in for a treat, though they may be a little surprised by just how story-heavy the game is. New players have an easy way to catch up on the story in a matter of minutes, ensuring there are as few roadblocks as possible. While the game took me just over 60 hours to complete, it never once felt too long. It's a wonderful, wholesome, and heartwarming game that wears its heart on its sleeve. If this, Atelier Ryza 1 and 2, and Blue Reflection: Second Light are what we can expect from Gust with a little more time and money, I can't wait to see what they have in store for the 25th anniversary this May.

Pros: Gorgeous visuals, charming characters, heartfelt story, fantastic music, challenging and rewarding combat, exciting dungeon design.

Cons: Minor pacing issues, maps can feel overly large at times.

I tried two Atelier games, but they never really "grapped" me. So I lost interest really fast.

Some JRPGs are so beautifully weird. I also hadnt chance to try the series, but would give it try if I had more time. Maybe in future …

But Im quite sure this year my JRPG itch will be more then solved by Xenoblade 3, which is supposed to be released around September I think. Thats my favorite JRPG series.
