Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Introduction Trailer

Here I am to repeat: DD: Dark Arisen is one of the best action RPGs ever made. Some games have a few unique things...this game has countless unique features no other game has ever copied.

So glorious is the world exploration, the monster fights, the 500+ pieces of gear, all with unique appearances! Then there's the brilliant story, which seems generic at first but is so unique I dare not spoil it.

Then there's the amazing soundtrack. Don't forget the infinite NG+ option, opening the way to speed runs and other fun stuff. Oh, and the Dark Arisen dungeon, despite some finding it too hard and complex, is totally brilliant with Diablo-style random loot to take my obsession to a new level.

Seriously folks, Dark Arisen is one of the best games ever made. It's a game that comes along once a generation. It is kind of a miracle that it got made in today's by-the-numbers game design world. Game. Is. BRILLIANT! My 240+ hours of playtime doesn't lie. ;)

I don't know, Brumbek - that 183rd hour has a really suspicious look on its face... ;)

I'm looking forward to it but I'm not super excited. I'll give it time for the 3D gurus to hopefully put in a 3D Vision mod and perhaps somebody can find a way to tamper down the respawn rate, too.

I never found the respawning enemies to be an issue. When you go to towns or dungeons the enemies on the overworld respawn, but other than that I never noticed really. And besides, combat is insanely fun in Dark Arisen, and respawning enemies lets you get a lot of critical crafting components.

To provide contrast, DA:Inquisition did have absurdly fast and unrealistic respawn times for enemies. Dark Arisen, though, doesn't respawn enemies much at all unless you specifically fast forward time or enter/exit locations.

To sum up the summing up, in DA:Inquisition I noticed the respawning in the first few hours and it was annoying all throughout the game. In Dark Arisen I never once had the "dangit, I just killed you" feeling of bad respawn games.

This game has so much going for it, yet I have to admit that after 1 play through it just lacked.

The quests and structure just feel so bland and pointless. There's an overall mechanical feel to proceedings, and it's such a shame because the combat and general basics are superb fun.

Has there been any talk of a sequel?

I'm wondering what you mean by bland and pointless? The quests are given in the usual way (NPCs in town and such). The early game gives you several quests you can take, and you don't even have to do all of them, giving you flexibility. I assume you followed the story? All the main quests directly tied into the intrigue of the castle and king. Maybe you are talking about the noticeboard stuff? That is the typical generic "kill xx" and "escort NPC", which are optional naturally.

Has there been any talk of a sequel?
There's only been talk of the horrible MMO version which is an abomination and shall never be mentioned again. When I said Dark Arisen is once in a generation I meant it. It saw three or four of Capcom's best and most tested veteran developers make a brilliant game. I doubt Capcom wants to take on the immense risk of a new AAA sequel…they'd rather do MMOs and episodic DLC-laden trash.

Ah, Brumbek, the resident Dragon's Dogma sales rep. ;)

He sold me on this game a while ago, and I got myself an X360 copy, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.
Good news that it's coming to PC, though.

Well, good news you haven't played it because the PC version is going to be the definitive way to play! It will be so weird to not have constant huge slowdowns during nearly every battle!

Well, someone has to promote Capcom's best game ever! I know I talk up Dark Arisen like it is the best game ever, but that honestly is how I feel. Unique games are so rare today, with only the indie games really trying new things. But a unique game that is also AAA? And also a huge RPG world? And also amazing dungeon-delving? Seriously, Dark Arisen blew my mind and each time I come back to it I wind up playing 5 more hours just goofing off because it's just *that good*.

Don't know. There really isn't much mature content at all. No super graphic violence or sexual stuff. No super serious story topics either. There is boob physics…and you can throw your pawns off cliffs and watch the delicious splat…eh eh eh.

Can you throw enemies off cliffs, too? I do like a game that lets you punt a goblin off a cliff.

Resident Evil? ;)

RE1 and RE2 were amazing back in the day…but they had terrible controls, bad UIs, terrible VOs, and other issues. As great as some of Capcom's classics are, Dragon's Dogma is easily their most ambitious and greatest achievement.

Pigs, goblins, pawns…they all splat just fine when thrown off cliffs. This isn't what makes Dragon's Dogma best ever, but it certainly is fun times!

If you mean ambitious as far as size and scope, yeah. Whether or not it's their most enjoyable game is still subjective though.

I don't think there's much sense in trying to compare games from completely different genres though..

Yeah, I mean the size and scope of the game compared to the quality. There's generally an inverse relationship between scope and quality, with very few games able to be both massive and really well-made. Obviously I think Dark Arisen is one of the best games ever, having wonderful attention to detail and a huge open-world scope.

I think even Capcom knows Dark Arisen is this amazing one-off game, one of their best works ever...but they know they can't duplicate it. Hence why they decided to convert it into a safe MMO format to milk the MMO crowd rather than try to innovate on a proper sequel. Just my opinion.

Ugghh, I hate MMOs, such a shame.

The quests, and general overall feel of the game, I just find bland. It's got superb combat, nice aesthetics and I really enjoyed it 1st play through.

But there's just very little in terms of story and rpg-ing which I find exciting. On second play through it also becomes apparent how mathematical the whole thing is.

Still a good game with plenty going for it. Just one which I feel a sequel could have really built upon.

Well I'm hoping it does well enough on PC that Capcom will decide to make a proper sequel.

Capcom has always been big on making sequels which is why I'm a little surprised they haven't made one for DD yet. The MMO format might indeed be more profitable, but I don't see why they don't do both.

I played this for a while in my PS3. I wish I had better memory, I know I was enjoying the game at first but about halfway through decided to abandon it.

It is definitely a game that gets better toward the end-game and even on NG+. A lot of players also didn't understand the fast travel system (you have to find Port Crystal items and then place them manually in the game world wherever you want).

But yeah, like any big RPG, you can get bogged down with tons of quests and stuff and all that. It definitely takes a serious commitment, but it's totally worth it in the end IMO.
