Scary things!

When you fire up Steam and see an update for Wizardry eight.....now that scared me, and yet was exciting at the same moment!

If you're expecting backward flying dragons with that update then I understand your feel - definetly scary!

A small update for Wizardry 8 is available now. It contains the following:

(Windows) nGlide was updated to 1.04 from 1.02
(Mac OS X) The game will now launch on OS X 10.11
(Mac OS X) Wine was updated to 1.7.54

who owns Wizardry these days? As much as the guys seem to want to move on from it couldn't they still license it?

I still have the 4-CD-version. No steam version, though.

Isn't it Night Dive that currently holds the licence? They are the people who also gave us System Shock. Thus far, what they've been doing has basically been gathering licences for a lot of older games, and made sure that those older games work on modern computers. They don't make games of their own (yet).
nGlide is by the way a program that basically makes it possible to use effects reliant on glide (3Dfx) on modern computers, through Direct3D.

And Wizardry games were made up until ~2012. Between 2000 and 2012 a grand total of 18 Wizardry games were made.
